Book Constructivism Across the Curriculum in Early Childhood Classrooms

Download or read book Constructivism Across the Curriculum in Early Childhood Classrooms written by Christine Chaillé and published by Pearson. This book was released on 2008 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Former President of NAECTE and co-author of "The Young Child As Scientist," Christine Chaille brings a Reggio Emilia inspired, fresh, friendly and innovative introduction to constructivist curriculum for educators in preschool to primary classrooms. Designed to be a readable and user-friendly source for teachers who are looking for guidance and inspiration when incorporating constructivism and Reggio Emilia ideas into their classroom, the chapters in this book are organized into two categories: Introductory chapters and "Big Idea" chapters. Introductory chapters provide the broad, theoretical framework and an overview of constructivist practice and Reggio Emilia ideas. The Big Idea chapters present one of the seven "Big ideas" (light, balance, cause and effect, transformation, sound, zooming in and out, and upside down) as springboards to help teachers build an interdisciplinary, child-centered curriculum. Big Idea chapters also bring theory into practice by incorporating scenarios of real teachers implementing the projects discussed in their classrooms. By balancing theory and the realities of the classroom, this book helps teachers challenge themselves and their students with strategies for infusing new curriculum approaches in their classrooms without sacrificing what they need to accomplish in the process.

Book Moral Classrooms Moral Children

Download or read book Moral Classrooms Moral Children written by Rheta DeVries and published by Teachers College Press. This book was released on 2012-06-08 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This classic bestseller, now updated for today's diverse teaching force and student populations, explores the benefits of sociomoral practices in the classroom. The authors draw on recent research to show how these approaches work with children ages 2–8. They focus on how to establish and maintain a classroom environment that fosters children's intellectual, social, moral, emotional, and personality development. Extending the work of Jean Piaget, the authors advocate for a cooperative approach that contrasts with the coercion and unnecessary control that can be seen in many classrooms serving young children. Practical chapters demonstrate how the constructivist approach can be embedded in a school program by focusing on specific classroom situations and activities, such as resolving conflict, group time, rule making, decision making and voting, social and moral discussions, cooperative alternatives to discipline, and activity time.

Book Constructivist Grounded Theory Approach to Understanding Teaching Kindergarteners how to Read During the COVID 19 Pandemic

Download or read book Constructivist Grounded Theory Approach to Understanding Teaching Kindergarteners how to Read During the COVID 19 Pandemic written by Mary Carney Hagan and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The COVID-19 pandemic has caused a variety of problems around the world, including isolation, school closure, contact restriction, and economic shutdown; these problems have completely changed the psychosocial environment and physical well-being of children everywhere (Fegert et al., 2020). Education underwent tremendous changes almost overnight: As a result of the pandemic, students were forced to embrace virtual learning to finish the 2019-2020 academic year and begin the 2020-2021 academic year. This change caused anxiety and trauma to adults and young children. DC Public Schools (2020) described the experience of virtual learning as a "shared traumatic experience" Virtual learning has many negative consequences, including isolation, loneliness, and a sense of detachment. These consequences were bound to affect education and have implications for the future learning of students, particularly those students learning fundamental reading skills in kindergarten. Kindergarteners are rapidly developing reading skills that will serve them for the rest of their lives. This study investigated what literacy instruction looked like during a period of virtual learning. This study took place in a kindergarten classroom in a public school in Washington, DC. I studied the class of kindergarteners I taught during the 2020-2021 academic year because they were learning virtually. The class included 23 students: 13 girls and 10 boys. One student had an individualized education plan, and seven students spoke English as a second language. The study relied on a constructivist grounded theory approach to address the research question. The findings provide meaningful insights for practitioners in early childhood education. They let educators know that there is work to be done surrounding the explicit teaching of phonemic awareness. We can see some of the immediate effects of COVID-19 in our early childhood education classrooms across the city of DC and elsewhere but more in-depth longitudinal data will need to be collected to see the lasting effects on children

Book Handbook of Moral and Character Education

Download or read book Handbook of Moral and Character Education written by Larry Nucci and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-04-24 with total page 571 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is widespread agreement that schools should contribute to the moral development and character formation of their students. In fact, 80% of US states currently have mandates regarding character education. However, the pervasiveness of the support for moral and character education masks a high degree of controversy surrounding its meaning and methods. The purpose of this handbook is to supplant the prevalent ideological rhetoric of the field with a comprehensive, research-oriented volume that both describes the extensive changes that have occurred over the last fifteen years and points forward to the future. Now in its second edition, this book includes the latest applications of developmental and cognitive psychology to moral and character education from preschool to college settings, and much more.
