Download or read book The Oboe written by Geoffrey Vernon Burgess and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2004-01-01 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The oboe, including its earlier forms the shawm and the hautboy, is an instrument with a long and rich history. In this book two distinguished oboist-musicologists trace that history from its beginnings to the present time, discussing how and why the oboe evolved, what music was written for it, and which players were prominent. Geoffrey Burgess and Bruce Haynes begin by describing the oboe’s prehistory and subsequent development out of the shawm in the mid-seventeenth century. They then examine later stages of the instrument, from the classical hautboy to the transition to a keyed oboe and eventually the Conservatoire-system oboe. The authors consider the instrument’s place in Romantic and Modernist music and analyze traditional and avant-garde developments after World War II. Noting the oboe’s appearance in paintings and other iconography, as well as in distinctive musical contexts, they examine what this reveals about the instrument’s social function in different eras. Throughout the book they discuss the great performers, from the pioneers of the seventeenth century to the traveling virtuosi of the eighteenth, the masters of the romantic period and the legends of the twentieth century such as Gillet, Goossens, Tabuteau, and Holliger. With its extensive illustrations, useful technical appendices, and discography, this is a comprehensive and authoritative volume that will be the essential companion for every woodwind student and performer.

In the following chapters, the technical aspects of performing the oboe are examined in depth. The 'Assembly, Disassembly' and 'Comprehension of the Parts of the Oboe' provide readers with a comprehensive comprehension of the instrument's anatomical structure and correct methods of manipulation. The instructional modules 'Proper Posture and Hand Position' and 'Embouchure and Breath Control' aim to foster a firm foundation by addressing fundamental elements of playing technique. 'Producing the First Sound' and 'Basic Fingerings' provide novices with the practical knowledge necessary to commence their musical endeavors. This book subsequently delves into the domain of music theory through chapters including 'Learning to Read Oboe Sheet Music' and 'Introduction to Musical Notation, ' which establish the foundation for the investigation of more intricate compositions. The aforementioned exercises-' Developing Finger Dexterity, ' 'Playing Simple Melodies, ' and 'Basic Articulation Techniques'-maintain the practical implementation of the progression.' The player's melodic fluency is further improved with the introduction to arpeggios and scales. Over the duration of this book, readers are assisted in constructing a methodical practice regimen and introduced to a variety of musical styles in the sections 'Building a Practice Routine' and 'Exploring Different Musical Styles.' The section 'Common Oboe Techniques' concentrates on particular proficiencies that are crucial for attaining mastery, whereas the section 'Troubleshooting Common Issues' offers resolutions to prevalent obstacles encountered by novices. Fundamentally, "How to Play Oboe for Beginners" not only imparts the technical proficiencies required for oboe mastery to novices but also cultivates an all-encompassing comprehension of musical principles and collaborative facets; thus, it becomes an essential manual for individuals aspiring to become oboists.

Book Marcel Tabuteau

Download or read book Marcel Tabuteau written by Laila Storch and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2018-05-01 with total page 626 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Laila Storch is a world-renowned oboist in her own right, but her book honors Marcel Tabuteau, one of the greatest figures in twentieth-century music. Tabuteau studied the oboe from an early age at the Paris Conservatoire and was brought to the United States in 1905, by Walter Damrosch, to play with the New York Symphony Orchestra. Although this posed a problem for the national musicians' union, he was ultimately allowed to stay, and the rest, as they say, is history. Eventually moving to Philadelphia, Tabuteau played in the Philadelphia Orchestra and taught at the Curtis Institute of Music, ultimately revamping the oboe world with his performance, pedagogical, and reed-making techniques. In 1941, Storch auditioned for Tabuteau at the Curtis Institute, but was rejected because of her gender. After much persistence and several cross-country bus trips, she was eventually accepted and began a life of study with Tabuteau. Blending archival research with personal anecdotes, and including access to rare recordings of Tabuteau and Waldemar Wolsing, Storch tells a remarkable story in an engaging style.
