Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The largest by far of the fifty states, Alaska is also the state of greatest mystery and diversity. And, as Claus-M. Naske and Herman E. Slotnick show in this comprehensive survey, the history of Alaska’s peoples and the development of its economy have matched the diversity of its land- and seascapes. Alaska: A History begins by examining the region’s geography and the Native peoples who inhabited it for thousands of years before the first Europeans arrived. The Russians claimed northern North America by right of discovery in 1741. During their occupation of “Russian America” the region was little more than an outpost for fur hunters and traders. When the czar sold the territory to the United States in 1867, nobody knew what to do with “Seward’s Folly.” Mainland America paid little attention to the new acquisition until a rush of gold seekers flooded into the Yukon Territory. In 1906 Congress granted Alaska Territory a voteless delegate and in 1912 gave it a territorial legislature. Not until 1959, however, was Alaska’s long-sought goal of statehood realized. During World War II, Alaska’s place along the great circle route from the United States to Asia firmly established its military importance, which was underscored during the Cold War. The developing military garrison brought federal money and many new residents. Then the discovery of huge oil and natural-gas deposits gave a measure of economic security to the state. Alaska: A History provides a full chronological survey of the region’s and state’s history, including the precedent-setting Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act of 1971, which compensated Native Americans for their losses; the effect of the oil industry and the trans-Alaska pipeline on the economy; the Exxon Valdez oil spill; and Alaska politics through the early 2000s.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With its vast diversity of land, people, and wildlife, Alaska is the last true American frontier. For the armchair traveler, those planning and dreaming of a future vacation, or those savoring a past trip of a lifetime, this spectacular volume brings together the majestic splendor of America's largest state--591,104 square miles and twice the size of Texas--as captured by some of the world's top outdoor photographers. Spectacular Alaska celebrates the land--including Mt. McKinley, the highest point in North America at 20,320 feet--the animals--including bald eagles, walruses, moose, whales, wolves, and Alaskan brown bear--and also the people. Much of Alaska is still covered in wilderness, and here lie the giants of America's national parks: Wrangell-St. Elias, almost six times the size of Yellowstone; Denali National Park, which is the size of Massachusetts and known as the Serengeti of the North because of its glorious wildlife; and many other national parks, monuments, and preserves. These parks, as well as the cities, villages, and regions in between are explored in the two hundred photographs and stunning panoramic gatefolds of Spectacular Alaska.

Book Finding Alaska s Villages

Download or read book Finding Alaska s Villages written by Alex Hills and published by Dog Ear Publishing. This book was released on 2016-10-26 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alex Hills traveled Alaska by bush plane and snow machine, braving extreme weather and rough terrain to bring telephone service to small villages across the big state. Then he developed a new public radio station to serve the people of Alaska’s huge northwest region. In Finding Alaska’s Villages Alex tells the story of how he helped the state’s telecom pioneers bring about an innovation that would forever change rural Alaska. It took some innovative technical work — and some convincing of government officials and corporate executives — to make it happen. The innovation was the introduction of the small satellite earth stations that would eventually make needed telecommunication services — two-way medical communication, a phone in every house and business, and radio and live television programs — available in Alaska’s villages.

Book Exploring Alaska Through Project Based Learning

Download or read book Exploring Alaska Through Project Based Learning written by Carole Marsh and published by Gallopade International. This book was released on 2016-05-17 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exploring Alaska through Project-Based Leaning includes 50 well-thought-out projects designed for grades 3-5. In assigning your students projects that dig into AlaskaÕs geography, history, government, economy, current events, and famous people, you will deepen their appreciation and understanding of Alaska while simultaneously improving their analytical skills and ability to recognize patterns and big-picture themes. Project-based learning today is much different than the craft-heavy classroom activities popular in the past. Inquiry, planning, research, collaboration, and analysis are key components of project-based learning activities today. However, that doesnÕt mean creativity, individual expression, and fun are out. They definitely arenÕt! Each project is designed to help students gain important knowledge and skills that are derived from standards and key concepts at the heart of academic subject areas. Students are asked to analyze and solve problems, to gather and interpret data, to develop and evaluate solutions, to support their answers with evidence, to think critically in a sustained way, and to use their newfound knowledge to formulate new questions worthy of exploring. While some projects are more complex and take longer than others, they all are set up in the same structure. Each begins with the central project-driving questions, proceeds through research and supportive questions, has the student choose a presentation option, and ends with a broader-view inquiry. Rubrics for reflection and assessments are included, too. This consistent framework will make it easier for you assign projects and for your students to follow along and consistently meet expectations. Encourage your students to take charge of their projects as much as possible. As a teacher, you can act as a facilitator and guide. The projects are structured such that students can often work through the process on their own or through cooperation with their classmates.
