Learning German with A1 Stories and Glossaries Learning a new language can be daunting, but with the right resources, this process becomes not only more manageable but also enjoyable. One of the most effective methods to learn German is through A1-level stories complemented with glossaries. Here are some advantages of this approach: Contextual Learning: Reading stories allows you to witness words and phrases in a natural context. This not only makes comprehension easier but also aids in retaining the meaning and application of vocabulary. Motivation Boost: An engaging story can make the learning process fun and motivational. Instead of rote memorization of isolated words and phrases, you're following a plot, perhaps even eager to see its conclusion. Structured Learning: A glossary at the end of each story aids in quickly referencing important or challenging words. This allows the reader to maintain the flow of the story while expanding their vocabulary. Grammatical Progress: Reading stories inevitably exposes one to various aspects of German grammar. Instead of relying solely on dry grammar exercises, the story fosters an intuitive understanding of sentence structures and tenses. Self-paced Learning: With a story and glossary at hand, you can learn at your own pace, revisiting sections as needed, and taking the time to understand and internalize each segment of the narrative. By integrating A1 stories and glossaries into your German learning regimen, you can enjoy a holistic, contextual, and enjoyable learning experience.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While we now have a great number of testimonials to the horrors of the Holocaust from survivors of that dark episode of twentieth-century history, rare are the accounts of what growing up in Nazi Germany was like for people who were reared to think of Adolf Hitler as the savior of his country, and rarer still are accounts written from a female perspective. Ursula Mahlendorf, born to a middle-class family in 1929, at the start of the Great Depression, was the daughter of a man who was a member of the SS at the time of his early death in 1935. For a long while during her childhood she was a true believer in Nazism—and a leader in the Hitler Youth herself. This is her vivid and unflinchingly honest account of her indoctrination into Nazism and of her gradual awakening to all the damage that Nazism had done to her country. It reveals why Nazism initially appealed to people from her station in life and how Nazi ideology was inculcated into young people. The book recounts the increasing hardships of life under Nazism as the war progressed and the chaos and turmoil that followed Germany’s defeat. In the first part of this absorbing narrative, we see the young Ursula as she becomes an enthusiastic member of the Hitler Youth and then goes on to a Nazi teacher-training school at fifteen. In the second part, which traces her growing disillusionment with and anger at the Nazi leadership, we follow her story as she flees from the Russian army’s advance in the spring of 1945, works for a time in a hospital caring for the wounded, returns to Silesia when it is under Polish administration, and finally is evacuated to the West, where she begins a new life and pursues her dream of becoming a teacher. In a moving Epilogue, Mahlendorf discloses how she learned to accept and cope emotionally with the shame that haunted her from her childhood allegiance to Nazism and the self-doubts it generated.

The atmosphere at the Villa was charged by the violent streaks of lightening that licked at the mountain tops and split a black sky. As the wind outside whipped up the surface of lake Leman into a cauldron of waves the occupants of the Villa; Lord Byron, Mary Shelley, Dr John Polidori, Percy Shelley and Claire Clairmont, whipped themselves into a gothic frenzy with recitals of haunting poetry and ghost stories. The stories that they read came from a book, originally written in German, that had recently been translated into French. The book that they read from was called Fantasmagoriana. Fantasmagoriana has a unique place in literary history. This is the first full translation of the stories that inspired Mary Shelley's Frankenstein and Dr John Polidori's The Vampyre.

Book True Irish Ghost Stories

Download or read book True Irish Ghost Stories written by St John D. Seymour and published by DigiCat. This book was released on 2023-11-23 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a compilation of different ghost and supernatural phenomena retold to the authors of this book and collected by them in different parts of Ireland. Yet the authors of this book remain objective, so it doesn't have any additional literary tricks employed to make the read feel like fiction. Once the British Isles characterize by a huge number of ghost stories and ghost lore is one of local peculiarities, the accounts in the book are perceived and presented like real. For example, there is even a story about a legal case regarding a haunted house, where the court ruled that the damages of the house should be perceived as such that are caused by a ghost. A truly interesting read for anyone who fancies supernatural and blood-chilling stories.

Book excerpt: These six classic tales of ghosts and hauntings, culled from Fantasmagoriana (1818), a German book that reputedly helped inspire Mary Shelley to pen her immortal novel Frankenstein while staying with Percy Shelley and the mad, vampiric Lord Byron on that haunted summer at Villa Diodati, in Switzerland, two hundred years ago. That night saw the birth of monsters such as the vampire Lord Ruthven, made famous by John Polidori's story The Vampire, as well a vampire tale by Byron himself, one left never finished. But the hideous visage of Frankenstein's monster was born from the nightmares of Mary, to stalk the earth and the dark, troubling dreams of man, forever. These six German classics of supernatural terror gave birth to the inspiration for such ghastly horrors. For, Fear, just as much as Love, is a universal language.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Of all species of ghostly phenomena, that commonly known as "haunted houses" appeals most to the ordinary person. There is something very eerie in being shut up within the four walls of a house with a ghost. The poor human being is placed at such a disadvantage. If we know that a gateway, or road, or field has the reputation of being haunted, we can in nearly every case make a detour, and so avoid the unpleasant locality. But the presence of a ghost in a house creates a very different state of affairs. It appears and disappears at its own sweet will, with a total disregard for our feelings: it seems to be as much part and parcel of the domicile as the staircase or the hall door, and, consequently, nothing short of leaving the house or of pulling it down (both of these solutions are not always practicable) will free us absolutely from the unwelcome presence. There is also something so natural, and at the same time so unnatural, in seeing a door open when we know that no human hand rests on the knob, or in hearing the sound of footsteps, light or heavy, and feeling that it cannot be attributed to the feet of mortal man or woman. Or perhaps a form appears in a room, standing, sitting, or walkingÑin fact, situated in its three dimensions apparently as an ordinary being of flesh and blood, until it proves its unearthly nature by vanishing before our astonished eyes. Or perhaps we are asleep in bed. The room is shrouded in darkness, and our recumbent attitude, together with the weight of bed-clothes, hampers our movements and probably makes us more cowardly. A man will meet pain or danger boldly if he be standing uprightÑoccupying that erect position which is his as Lord of Creation; but his courage does not well so high if he be supine. We are awakened suddenly by the feel that some superhuman Presence is in the room. We are transfixed with terror, we cannot find either the bell-rope or the matches, while we dare not leap out of bed and make a rush for the door lest we should encounter we know not what. In an agony of fear, we feel it moving towards us; it approaches closer, and yet closer, to the bed, andÑfor what may or may not then happen we must refer our readers to the pages of this book.

For Sarah and Patrick, family life has always been easy, until her mother's death sends Sarah spiraling into depression. When she overdoses on sleeping pills, Sarah insists it was an accident, but neither Patrick nor their teenage children believe her. Determined to give their family a fresh start, Patrick convinces her to move back to the idyllic beachside home where he grew up. But there's a catch: The once-beautiful old house is now known as the Murder House. It has been standing empty for fifteen years, ever since another family was brutally slaughtered within its walls. Nostalgic for his childhood, Patrick is adamant that this can be their "dream home" again. Sarah tries to bring it back to its original warmth, but as locals hint that the house is haunted, the children begin having nightmares, strange writing appears on the walls, and creepy "gifts" suddenly arrive on the doorstep at odd hours. With the news that the murderer has been paroled, Sarah can't shake the feeling that something just isn't right. Not with the house, not with the town, not even with her own loving husband--whose stories about his perfect childhood suddenly aren't adding up. Can Sarah uncover the secrets of the Murder House before another family is destroyed? With an irresistible, fog-drenched atmosphere that hides its knife-sharp twists, Vanessa Savage's THE WOMAN IN THE DARK is the perfect new read for fans of I Let You Go and The Couple Next Door, a chilling psychological thriller about a dark family dysfunction and the secrets that haunt us.
