Book Creating Meaning in Funerals

Download or read book Creating Meaning in Funerals written by William G. Hoy and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-08-01 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Creating Meaning in Funerals is a book about the ways in which bereaved families and communities create meaningful ceremonies against a backdrop of what is culturally appropriate, even when their choices might make little economic sense to those outside the culture. The culmination of these customs and practices, this book maintains, is how bereaved individuals, families, and communities are drawn into significant meaning making in early bereavement. Readers will be repeatedly challenged to suspend their own biases, observe the customs and beliefs of others thoughtfully, and provide counseling support and encouragement to bereaved individuals for whom funerals were or were not effective means of coping with their loss. Discussion questions at the end of each chapter make the book useful for educational settings such as funeral service classroom instruction, thanatology classes, and grief counseling courses. Each chapter is also accompanied by its own reference list to make chapters more useful individually.

Book The Sunday After the Funeral

Download or read book The Sunday After the Funeral written by Timothy S. Thompson and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2020-07-31 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tim Thompson invites you to journey with him in exploring a dimension of ministry that has been sparsely addressed in main stream scholarship. Following inumerable experiences in dealing with traumatic situations as a local pastor, a clinical chaplain and a military chaplain, Reverend Thompson has aquired hard learned lessons along the way. Some readers are currently serving as pastors and have experienced traumatic situations themselves. Others, however, may not have dealt with such situations, but know someone who has had to deal with traumas as a pastor or a chaplain. Envision yourslef as a pastor of a local church, say a mid-size congregation in a semi-rural context. The sun rises, announcing the dawn of another day. It feels like just another day until it is rudely interrupted by the news that a member of your church has died tragically. As the pastor, you join with a grieving family, reeling from shock and confusion to organize the funeral. The funeral is well attended. You have planned and executed a memorial service in which the deceased is honored and the family is nutured. A few days later, you contemplate what to say on the Sunday after the funeral. Anticipating a congregation dealing with a wide range of of emotions from saddness to confusion to anger, you prepare for an unprecedented challenge. As you pour over scripture, seeking God for His divine intervention in that moment, perplexing questions course through your thoughts.”What do I say?” Where do I start?” Should I address this event at all or should I face it head on?” These are only few questions with many more racing through your mind. Reverend Thompson has engaged in intense literary research and enlisted the experiences from other pastors to assist you for when these dreaded events occur.

Book Funeral Rites Reformation for Any African Ethnic Community Based on the Proposed New Funeral Practices for the Agikuyu

Download or read book Funeral Rites Reformation for Any African Ethnic Community Based on the Proposed New Funeral Practices for the Agikuyu written by Johnson Nganga Mbugua and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2016-06-17 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book has been written on the premise that the mode of coping with death of virtually all African ethnic communities has taken proportions and turns that are neither cultural, scriptural, nor necessary. Current rites are complicated, time-consuming, expensive, and are leaving most families and their neighbors impoverished. They have been extremely commercialized and a large number of Africans do not have resources to bury their dead the "modern" way. Were the Agikuyu (read: Africans) to curb numerous funeral demands which they deem necessary and "customary," when in actual fact they are not, funerals for them would become cheaper, faster, and simpler; would be decent enough for the dead; would take care of those left behind; and would be environmentally friendly. How Africans in the Diaspora, away from their ancestral homeland, should cope with death is also addressed. Also addressed is the issue of cremation. It is shown that at the resurrection, God will accord us new spiritual bodies which will have no bearing with the material substance of our earthly (mortal) bodies.
