Book excerpt: This book provides a holistic, interdisciplinary overview of offshore wind energy, and is a must-read for advanced researchers. Topics, from the design and analysis of future turbines, to the decommissioning of wind farms, are covered. The scope of the work ranges from analytical, numerical and experimental advancements in structural and fluid mechanics, to novel developments in risk, safety & reliability engineering for offshore wind. The core objective of the current work is to make offshore wind energy more competitive, by improving the reliability, and operations and maintenance (O&M) strategies of wind turbines. The research was carried out under the auspices of the EU-funded project, MARE-WINT. The project provided a unique opportunity for a group of researchers to work closely together, undergo multidisciplinary doctoral training, and conduct research in the area of offshore wind energy generation. Contributions from expert, external authors are also included, and the complete work seeks to bridge the gap between research and a rapidly-evolving industry.

Book Effect of a Leading Edge Flap Upon the Lift Drag and Pitching Moment of an Airplane Employing a Thin Unswept Wing

Download or read book Effect of a Leading Edge Flap Upon the Lift Drag and Pitching Moment of an Airplane Employing a Thin Unswept Wing written by John C. Heitmeyer and published by BiblioGov. This book was released on 2013-07 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effects of deflecting full-span, constant-chord, leading-edge flaps, having either round or sharp leading edges, upon the lift, drag, . and pitching moment characteristics of a model of an interceptor-type aircraft have been determined experimentally at subsonic and supersonic speeds. Results indicate that the variations of lift with angle of attack and of pitching moment with lift were unaffected by either the shape of the flap leading edge or flap deflection. Deflection of the flaps having either a round or sharp leading edge increased the drag at zero lift at both subsonic and supersonic speeds. In spite of the increase in the drag at zero lift, however, deflection of the flaps increased the maximum lift-drag ratio at subsonic speeds and had no deleterious effect at supersonic speeds

This book was released on 1954 with total page 706 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A previous report, NACA TN 3007, gave force and moment data for the NACA 64A010 airfoil section equipped alternately with a flap and a slat at the leading edge, and with a split flap and a double-slotted flap at the trailing edge. The present report presents the chordwise distributions of pressure measured concurrently with the force and moment data of NACA 3007. The pressure data for the leading-edge flap and slat have been converted into coefficients of normal force, chord force, and moment based on the geometry of the leading-edge device.

Book Blowing Over the Flaps and Wing Leading Edge of a Thin 49 Degree Swept Wing body tail Configuration in Combination with Leading edge Devices

Download or read book Blowing Over the Flaps and Wing Leading Edge of a Thin 49 Degree Swept Wing body tail Configuration in Combination with Leading edge Devices written by H. Clyde McLemore and published by . This book was released on 1956 with total page 57 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An investigation has been conducted in the Langley full-scale tunnel to determine the effects on the low-speed aerodynamic characteristics of blowing air over the trailing-edge flap of a large-scale wing-body-tail model. The wing and horizontal tail have an aspect ratio of 3.5, taper ratio of 0.3, leading-edge sweep of 49 degrees, and NACA 65A006 airfoil sections parallel to the plane of symmetry. The trailing-edge air was ejected over highly deflected half- and full-span flaps in combination with several leading-edge-flow control devices including blowing from a slot in the wing leading edge. The momentum coefficient range was investigated was 0 to 0.16 for the trailing-edge blowing and 0 to 0.025 for the leading-edge blowing. Most of the tests were conducted at a Reynolds number of 5,200,000 corresponding to a Mach number of 0.08.

Book The Use of a Leading edge Area suction Flap and Leading edge Modifications to Improve the High lift Characteristics of an Airplane Model with a Wing of 45 Degree Sweep and Aspect Ratio 2 8

Download or read book The Use of a Leading edge Area suction Flap and Leading edge Modifications to Improve the High lift Characteristics of an Airplane Model with a Wing of 45 Degree Sweep and Aspect Ratio 2 8 written by David G. Koenig and published by . This book was released on 1957 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An investigation was undertaken on an airplane model with drooped horizontal tail and a highly tapered wing of aspect ratio sweep. The investigation was designed to determine what improvements in the control of leading-edge stall would be possible with the use of area suction on a le--edge flap and with the leading-edge flap used with a modified or bulbous leading edge and a chord extension. Two spans of area-suction trailing-edge flap were tested. The tests were made at a Reynolds number of 8,900,000.

Practical applications of morphing devices are presented—from the challenge of conceptual design incorporating both structural and aerodynamic studies, to the most promising and potentially flyable solutions aimed at improving the performance of commercial aircraft and UAVs. Morphing aircraft are multi-role aircraft that change their external shape substantially to adapt to a changing mission environment during flight. The book consists of eight sections as well as an appendix which contains both updates on main systems evolution (skin, structure, actuator, sensor, and control systems) and a survey on the most significant achievements of integrated systems for large commercial aircraft. Provides current worldwide status of morphing technologies, the industrial development expectations, and what is already available in terms of flying systems Offers new perspectives on wing structure design and a new approach to general structural design Discusses hot topics such as multifunctional materials and auxetic materials Presents practical applications of morphing devices
