Book Leading Edge Antioxidants Research

Download or read book Leading Edge Antioxidants Research written by Harold V. Panglossi and published by Nova Publishers. This book was released on 2007 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In biological systems, the normal processes of oxidation (plus a minor contribution from ionising radiation) produce highly reactive free radicals. These can readily react with and damage other molecules. In some cases the body uses free radicals to destroy foreign or unwanted objects, such as in an infection. However, in the wrong place, the body's own cells may become damaged. Should the damage occur to DNA, the result could be cancer. Antioxidants decrease the damage done to cells by reducing oxidants before they can damage the cell.Virtually all studies of mammals have concluded that a restricted calorie diet extends the lifespan of mammals by as much as 100 percent. This remarkable finding suggests that food is actually more damaging than smoking. As food produces free radicals (oxidants) when metabolised, antioxidant-rich diets are thought to stave off the effects of ageing significantly better than diets lacking in antioxidants. The reduced levels of free radicals, resulting from a reduction in their production by metabolism, is thought to be a major cause of the success of caloric restriction in increasing life span. Antioxidants consist of a group of vitamins including vit

Book Nutrition Research at the Leading Edge

Download or read book Nutrition Research at the Leading Edge written by Russell E. Cassady and published by Nova Publishers. This book was released on 2008 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nutraceuticals are established food components widely consumed as supplements to the diet, either as formulated products or for fortification of foods, particularly functional foods. Over the last two decades there has been a steady growth in research into the possible health benefits. Both the general public and the media have become increasingly interested, and this has coincided with a general interest in health issues. This has resulted in increasing usage of commercially available products, as well as their food sources. It is now well understood that modern pharmaceuticals cannot successfully treat all diseases, coupled with their lack of effectiveness in certain disease states, and the possibility of marked side effects. There is logical use of a number of nutraceuticals which are endogenous nutrients from a range of food sources, as many diseases maybe caused by deficiency states.

  • Publisher : Springer Nature
  • Release : 2021-05-27
  • ISBN : 981160522X
  • Pages : 323 pages

Download or read book Oxidative Stress written by Canhua Huang and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-05-27 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a systematic review of the cutting-edge knowledge in stress medicine. Cellular redox imbalance, resulting from overproduction of reactive oxide species (ROS), leads to oxidative stress and subsequent occurrence and development of many diseases, such as cancer, diabetes, pain, etc. In addition, ROS can induce post-translational modification of proteins and play roles through redox signaling pathways. In this book, the authors attempt to re-define the key concepts in oxidative stress, such as oxidative eustress and oxidative distress, revisit the pivotal signaling of oxidative stress in human diseases, and discuss the debate in current anti-oxidant strategies, such as natural products and drug repurposing. This book serves as a reference to graduate students and researchers in this growing field.

Book Oxidative Stress Biomarkers and Antioxidant Protocols

Download or read book Oxidative Stress Biomarkers and Antioxidant Protocols written by Donald Armstrong and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-02-04 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first protocols book, Free Radical and Antioxidant Protocols (1) was published in late 1998. Sections were divided into three parts, covering selected biochemical techniques for measuring oxidative stress, antioxidant (AOX) activity, and combined applications. In choosing the 40 methods to be included in that book, I realized there were considerably more of equal value than that which we could have presented in a single volume. To produce a comprehensive resource, this book and a third are being compiled to expand coverage of the field. A summary of papers (2) published on this important subject emphasizes the continuing rapid growth in oxidative stress investigations relating to our understanding of biochemical reactions, their relevance to pathophysiological mechanisms, how disease may arise, and how therapeutic intervention may be achieved(3). Although there is some overlap between the categories, the ana- sis shown below illustrates where current studies are concentrated and are almost evenly distributed between free radicals and AOX. Over the last 4 yr, there has been a 55% increase in the number of papers published in the area.
