These sketches show how young men have over come difficulties, sometimes poverty, sometimes illness; how they have made failures before find ing their true vocation. They show the results of energy, perseverance, and untiring devotion' how a cheerful face and a hopeful spirit like Agassiz's, or a gentle and kindly nature like Darwin's, can win its way against Opposition. Book American College Course Classic Reprint

Download or read book American College Course Classic Reprint written by Seymour Eaton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-30 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American College Course As stated in the Introductory Note to the first volume of the present series, these books are in reality, as their names imply, popular studies. Everything in them has been written or prepared with the needs of the general reader or student in view as distinct from those of the professed special student. The intention has been to afford such information respecting the authors selected for treatment as will make the study of them not only a pleasure, but an easy pleasure. To that end broad and general views have been presented rather than minute and special ones. Pains have been taken to illustrate the personalities of the authors; to show them as they were as men and citizens, and in their private life and home relations. Very useful, we trust, will be found the notes prepared for readers for use in their own individual studies of the authors. These notes are sufficiently complete to meet the needs of all classes of readers - those who desire to go pretty far in their studies, as well as those who have time and opportunity to go only a little way. Although published in three volumes, these studies constitute one continuous series. Ten authors have been selected for treatment, the ten greatest names in American literature. The student-reader should not rest satisfied until he has made a pretty thorough acquaintance with the whole ten. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Great Men of Science: A History of Scientific Progress I count it an honour to be allowed to write a few words of introduction for the English edition of Professor Lenard's historical studies of the great men of science. It is now over twenty years since I worked as a research student in his laboratory, and time has dulled many memories, but the recollection of his inspiriting and wholehearted devotion to the service of science, of his generous enthusiasm forthe work of men of genius, living and dead, and of his wonderful experimental skill and resource, is still bright. Ramsauer, Hausser and Kossel, whose names have since become famous, were among his research students at that time, and the physics colloquium, with Professor Lenard's illumin ating and significant interjections, comments and questions, made the pursuit of scientific truth seem an exciting and supremely desirable quest. It was on such occasions that Professor Lenard's interest in the history of science came particularly to our notice. Who had first shown the way here, what had he actually done, how was he led to do it? Such questions, to which our professor too often had to supply the answer himself, brought before us the great ness of past workers and the significance of their achieve ments. Galileo, Newton, Faraday, Hertz (who was Lenard's teacher): such men became living figures for us, and their tasks and successes appeared as part of an organic structure, and not as an empty record of past times. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fifty Years of American Science Ultima Thule more remote in thought and interest than are Hawaii or even the Philippines to - day. Then, as now, the nation was in the throes Of growing pains, acuter than now, because territorial expansion was more rapid; Texas had recently given its empire - an empire Of barren breadths and bloody bandits, according to the critics - and Florida had lately come to us from Spain; Iowa and Wisconsin had entered the family Of states, and Oregon had become a troublesome territory; and the treaty of guadalupe-hidalgo had just been approved, bringing California and New Mexico (with most Of what is now Ari zona) into our possession - adding the care Of hopeless deserts and the control Of treacherous tribes and an alien population to the duties Of an overworked legislative and administrative government, and preparing the way for the witticism, Mex ico will be forgiven all if she will only take back her lands. In truth, there was danger, painfully manifest thirteen years later, Of disruption through overgrowth of the local interests and provincialisms always straining our theoretic union a danger happily removed forever a quarter century later by the railway and the telegraph, which gave a stronger unity than political faith or governmental doctrine. The progress Of the nation during the half century is be yond parallel. By normal growth and peaceful absorption without foreign conquest the population has trebled, and the national wealth has increased tenfold. The subjugation of natural forces has proceeded at a higher rate, and the exten sion Of knowledge and the diffusion of intelligence have gone forward more rapidly still. This advance, so great as to be grasped by few minds, is the marvel of human history. The world has moved forward as it never did before. Yet fully half Of the progress of the world, during the last fifty years, has been wrought through the unprecedented energy of American enterprise and genius, guided by American science.
