Book excerpt: The purpose of this qualitative case study was to investigate how participation in a leadership training program facilitated the development and practice of the eight core values of the social change model of leadership development in college students. The study included three directors and 15 students from different ethnicities, and both genders from a small private Christian university in the Deep South. Research questions focused on student perceptions of how they had developed the skills outlined in the social change model of leadership and how others perceived the students practiced these skills in roles as leaders. Students completed the Socially Responsible Leadership Scale-Revision 2 (SRLS-R2) to reveal the depth at which they perceived they embodied socially responsible leadership. Interviews allowed study participants to elaborate on the leadership activities at the college and expound upon the eight core values of the Social Change Model (SCM). Survey results revealed that students perceived they possessed five out of eight of the core values with a mean rating of 4 or higher. Commitment (4.75) received the highest mean score. Change received the lowest mean score (3.56). Students stated that the project-based nature of the program, retreat opportunities, team-building activities, and working with people who used different thought processes assisted with their growth as a socially responsible leader. Director interviews revealed how students from the leadership training program demonstrated socially responsible leadership in the organizations where they had served as leaders.

Book excerpt: As the study of leadership evolves, it is vital to consider adult development; specifically student leadership development. This study examined changes over time in undergraduate students' leadership self-efficacy, leader identity, and socially responsible leadership capacity. As a component of motivation to learn, curiosity breadth and depth were included to explore how the "positive approach to new information" relates to individual leader growth. This research helps explain how leader identity fits into a student leader development model as an outcome and as a contributor to future leader identity growth and engagement with leadership tasks. A combination of longitudinal and cross-sectional designs was used to study student leadership capacity development due to participation in a structured semester-long leadership development program that was based on student-specific theoretical models. Participants in the program and a control group of similarly-aged students from a mid-sized comprehensive university completed surveys at three time points over a six-month period. Past participants in the program and a senior-level control group completed a single survey approximately two years following the past participants' completion of the leadership development program. The extent to which students describe themselves as leaders and the certainty with which they perceive themselves as leaders contributed the most to their growth over time. Students who enter college with a higher level of leader identity may have a tendency to grow at a higher rate in that identity throughout college. Citizenship and depth of curiosity may play a role in leader identity development. Students higher in consciousness of self, citizenship, and breadth of curiosity are more inclined to engage in personal leadership tasks. Recent and past program participants showed greater differences in levels of leadership self-efficacy, leadership self-identity, and leader identity stage than the control groups. Results partially supported existing research that leadership development programs produce growth in students' leadership capacity and leadership self-efficacy. In addition, results indicated that early development of leader identity is an integral part of the overall picture of leadership capacity, adding specificity to the body of literature related to college student leadership development. New paths of inquiry were provided for practitioners and scholars.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine how participation as a mentor in a leadership-based mentoring program influences socially responsible leadership capacity. Previous studies have shown mentoring to influence gains in socially responsible leadership capacity of college students; however, these studies only examined college student who were being mentored. This study addresses this gap by examining college students who serve as mentors. Using the Social Change Model of Leadership as a guiding theoretical framework, the socially responsible leadership capacity of college students who serve as mentors in a leadership-based mentoring program at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Data was collected using the SRLS-R2, and scores of mentors were compared to: (1) national averages from the Multi-Institutional Study of Leadership, and (2) college student leaders who do not mentor. Results from independent samples means tests demonstrate that college students who mentor have significantly higher capacity to engage in socially responsible leadership on all eight scales of the Social Change Model (consciousness of self, congruence, commitment, collaboration, common purpose, controversy with civility, citizenship, and change) when compared to national averages. When compared to college student leaders who do not mentor, college mentors scored significantly higher on the consciousness of self scale. These findings suggest serving as a mentor is a factor that influences growth in socially responsible leadership capacity and personal identity development.

This study examined the effects and potential contributions of participation in campus-based leadership trainings on college students' leadership development with special consideration for gender and racial background. To better understand the relationship between campus-based trainings and leadership development, data from the Wabash National Study of Liberal Arts Education (WNS) was utilized. The WNS was a multi-institutional, longitudinal dataset made up of 47 four-year colleges and universities from 21 states throughout the United States. This study mark's one of the first multi-year, multi-institution longitudinal studies to investigate the relationship between campus-based leadership trainings and leadership development. The results of the study pointed to several over-arching themes. The first theme was that a student's background and leadership experience prior to college matter. Next, a student's curricular success matters, and influences their leadership gains throughout all aspects of the SCM. The interactions students have with peers who are different from themselves matters. Leadership development opportunities need to be intentionally designed. Finally, campus-based leadership trainings offer a potential programmatic option for institutions to help develop their students as socially responsible leaders, regardless of backgrounds and other experiences.

Jackson At the University of Wisconsin-Madison 2012 ABSTRACT There has been an identifiable decline in moral decision making and socially responsible behaviors in society based on recent national events such as Enron and the Bernie Madoff scandal (Arvedlund, 2009; Doran, 2004). This study attempts to address this leadership crisis by examining college student involvement and leadership experiences that may uniquely position colleges to facilitate the development of socially responsible leaders. Higher education professionals play a critical role in educating productive citizens and have the opportunity to integrate moral reasoning and ethical decision making into programming (St. John, 2009). Given that involvement in college and leadership development have long been associated with positive outcomes for both individual and society, this population serves as a promising starting point to address this national challenge (Astin, 1993; Kuh, Kinzie, Schuh, & Whitt, 2005; Pascarella & Terenzini, 20050. Moreover, this examination sought to better understand the Black student experience at PWIs as they had been identified in at least one previous empirical study as having demonstrated social change values (Dugan & Komives, 2007). This study utilized both the socially responsible leadership scale and collective racial esteem scale to conduct a descriptive and correlational examination of social change values as defined in the Social Change Model of Leadership and social change behaviors variables from the Multi-institutional Study of Leadership. Findings suggest that Black students strongly exhibit socially responsible leadership, are involved in on and off campus activities and participate in community service more than any other activity. Further, this study reveals that collective racial esteem measures are highly correlated with social change behaviors. These significant findings illuminate our understanding of Black student involvement and socially responsible leadership, but also provide some critical opportunities for higher education practitioners, researchers and students to further explore ethical and moral decision making, expand definitions of leadership and implement intentional leadership efforts.

Book excerpt: Colleges not only educate students in academic discipline knowledge, but also help them develop skills to meaningfully lead and participate in our complex democracy as socially responsible citizens. All campuses have formal and informal opportunities to engage students in roles that challenge and develop students' socially responsible leadership skills including commitment, common purpose, and collaboration. However, individual and organizational elements such as differences in perspectives and hostile climates can quell leadership and educational participation, inhibit critical student development skills, and result in disempowerment, especially for those students from underserved communities. Given this, a critical question is how can colleges foster conditions that promote the formation of complex and pluralistic democratic and socially responsible leadership skills within the context of contemporary societal political, ideological, and social polarization that are replicated and enacted on today's campuses? To address this question, this qualitative inquiry examined how diverse student leaders navigated conflict and controversy and their resulting dilemmas with their peers, and how such experiences affected their democratic learning and leadership development. Study participants identified both the value of constructive conflict that leads to more advanced moral reasoning and equitable practices, and the harm of destructive controversy that further polarizes and entrenches opposition. The latter experiences resulted in deleterious effects on participants' interpersonal and psychological wellbeing, whereas the former experiences, while challenging, served as an opportunity for student leaders to develop and practice resilient and interculturally insightful skills of perspective taking, emotional intelligence, and advanced conflict resolution strategies that served to empower individual and group commitment toward common purpose and shared goals. Emerging from the data is a new definitional model of socially responsible leadership (SRL) that is both a process and product of a blended ethic of care and ethic of justice approach in realizing democratic attitudes, knowledge, skills, and outcomes. Specifically, the four interconnected and dynamic dimensions of the SRL conceptual model are self-efficacy, group accountability, shared power, and empathetic conflict resolution. Implications and meaningful strategies for colleges to help facilitate growth through conflict across individual, group, and organizational domains are discussed.

Book excerpt: Greater knowledge of specific populations? perception of the capacity for change will assist leadership practitioners in the design and implementation of effective leadership programs. These leadership programs will hopefully prepare students to lead effectively in a rapidly changing society where a strong capacity for change is needed. This study examined three specific populations of undergraduate students who participated in the Multi-Institutional Study of Leadership in 2006. The three populations of interest were first generation college students, transfer students and male students. The purpose of the study was to determine the self-perceived capacity to adapt to change for selected college student populations based on the Social Change Model of Leadership (Appendix A). A second purpose was to determine differences in this self-perceived capacity to adapt to change between and among these selected college student populations. Responses to the 10 individual items of the Change Scale (MSL) were measured and analyzed to determine if any significant differences and/or interactions existed in the data. The results of this study inform the design of both Academic and Student Affairs student leadership development programs to enhance the leadership development of these selected student populations. The research design for the study included the use of descriptive statistics, a correlation matrix to examine the relationships of the 10 individual items of the change scale, and a 3X10 MANOVA. These tests and measures were utilized on all three independent variables (generational status, transfer status and gender) and the 10 individual items of the change scale within the Socially Responsible Leadership Scale. This study identified distinct differences between/among the three populations of interest and provided numerous recommendations for practice such as tapping into the unique life experiences of transfer and first generation college students to learn more about their stronger capacity for managing change and specifically recruiting students from the three populations of interest to assist in the delivery of change-related curriculum within leadership programs. Another recommendation was made for leadership practitioners to utilize the Social Change Model of Leadership development to help with the development of leaders who will share a commitment to positive change at the individual, group and community levels.
