Book excerpt: The purpose of the study was to investigate the new roles of principals—as managers, instructors and change or reform agents—as perceived and practiced by leaders in the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) countries and the United States of America (USA), and as perceived and practiced by their counterparts in Lebanon. This study documented how principals performed their new roles by matching their self- perceived and perceived leadership management styles with their behaviors while working together with subject coordinators and teachers to implement the school vision in Lebanese secondary public and private schools. Therefore, the study used both qualitative and quantitative methods to investigate the roles of principals perceived as leaders, in Lebanese secondary schools (public and privare0 through the study of the principals use of the four leadership framework of Bolman and Deal (2006) – the four leadership styles and their corresponding behaviors—as self-perceived and the principals use of the four- leadership framework as perceived by subject coordinators and teachers. The results revealed that the principals perceived their main leadership management style as, firstly, human resources and, secondly, structural in the public and private Lebanese secondary sectors. There was no significant difference between the results in the public school sector and the private school sector. This research may direct future studies on school principals management styles and behaviors in their quest to reach the school vision. Recommendations were given.

Book excerpt: Research on the role of the subject coordinators in secondary schools has shown that this role can influence the successful implementation of the school's visio n which in turn can influence teachers' performance and students' results. The f act that subject coordinators are the link between the administrators and the te achers makes them essential players in implementing this vision in the classroom . The importance given to this role varies among schools: from marginal in some schools to nearly 'venerated' in others. This study aims to investigate 1) the Bolman and Deal leadership and management styles of subject coordinators as perceived by coordinators and principals; 2) a ny differences in these perceptions of styles according to subject of instructio n, sector and gender; 3) the Bolman and Deal leadership and management behaviors of subject coordinators as perceived by coordinators and principals. The sample for this study is 16 coordinators randomly selected from public and p rivate schools in the Greater Beirut and Mount Lebanon area. Coordinators partic ipating in the study filled out a questionnaire adapted for this study. In addit ion, a sample of the 16 coordinators was interviewed regarding issues identified in the questionnaire. Finally, the eight heads of the schools to which the coordinators belong filled a similar version of the questionnaire and were interviewed to identify their pe rceptions of what the coordinators are doing. Data was analyzed to produce a pro file for each coordinator. These profiles were compared and contrasted to identi fy patterns among schools. Major findings of this study included the following: (1) The leadership and management styles of coordinators in Lebanese secondary s chools are Human Resources and Structural (2) Math and Male coordinators view th e structural style ranking first. Language and Female coordinators view the huma n resources style as ranking first. As for the principals, the Private and Femal e coordinators have a human resources dominant style. Public and Male coordinato rs have structural dominant style. (3) The behaviors determining the role of coo rdinators in Lebanese Secondary schools are: (1) Supportive, (2) Participative, (3) Analytic, and (4) Organized according to the perceptions of coordinators and their principals'.

When the general public was asked how the education system was performing, 76 percent of respondents had a positive opinion; and these satisfaction rates have been consistently high over the years. However, perception of education quality does not reflect the reality of the sector; and learning outcomes, which are the determining metrics of success in education, have been lower than the international average, with a declining trend since 2007. This volume seeks to uncover why the education system in Lebanon is not reaching its full potential. It uses a political economy approach to study the drivers and factors that guide education operations to produce and utilize education outcomes. This includes the study of context, stakeholders, and processes that shape education policies, institutions, and activities. It also aims to identify enablers of and constraints on policy change and implementation, as well as the achievement of results. In this context, the analysis encompasses how education policies are developed; how education consumables—such as curricula, textbooks, and learning materials—are produced, distributed, and used by learners; how education services are delivered and monitored; and how achieved results are measured. It includes the identification of the most influential actors in the education arena, as well as their vested interests. It also examines unfavorable frameworks for action that are likely to block the adoption of reforms and delay or derail their implementation. The system-level analysis presented in this volume used a mixed-method approach. Qualitative and quantitative analyses were conducted based on a review and analysis of more than 1,900 research papers, articles, and books; laws and policies; expenditures; trends; and enrollment and outcome indicators. Primary methods of inquiry were also used and included interviews, focus group discussions, and a household-based perception survey.

Book excerpt: To commemorate the 10-year anniversary of the International School Leadership Development Network (ISLDN), this book is a compilation of the work conducted by network scholars. This volume is the first comprehensive overview of the studies conducted by ISLDN members engaged in examining how social justice leaders and leaders of high-needs schools address the social conditions, learning experiences, and performance of their students. Other international school leadership research consortia have emerged in the 21st century; however, the ISLDN is the second longest operating project, after the International Successful School Principalship Project (ISSPP). Since its creation in 2010, ISLDN scholars have delivered papers at a variety of international conferences and shared findings in research publications, including books and special issues of journals. Until now, ISLDN research findings have been disseminated separately for the project’s two strands: (a) social justice leadership and (b) leadership in underperforming high-needs schools. Therefore, the purpose of the book is to document the history and evolution of the ISLDN and to provide descriptions and reflections of the project’s research findings, methodologies, and collaborative processes across the two strands. This volume captures studies of school leaders from 19 countries representing six continents - Africa, Asia, Australia and Oceania, Europe, North America, and South America. The authors examine important external and internal contextual factors influencing schools in different cultural settings and provide insights about the values and practices of social justice leaders working in high-needs school settings. Numerous practical strategies are provided for school leaders working in schools with similar conditions. The concluding chapter by the co-editors synthesizes the structural factors, personal beliefs and values, and contextualized change management strategies that shape school leaders’ actions aimed at ensuring the best learning outcomes for their students. Besides capturing the range of findings emerging from various ISLDN studies conducted over the past decade, several chapters critically examine the project’s current contributions to the field. Authors suggest broadening the dissemination of our findings to increase the visibility of the project, expanding the research methods beyond qualitative interviews, incorporating studies from non-Anglophone countries, and augmenting the scope of our analyses and research focus. These researchers’ journeys also reveal the obstacles to and benefits of engaging in these types of international collaborative research ventures.
