Book Leadership Loyalty and Liability

Download or read book Leadership Loyalty and Liability written by William Cook and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2021-12-08 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Robert ‘Mac’ MacIver had always been interested in aviation, and fate takes its course when he looks up to see a military jet flying overhead just after finishing his last exam at university in the mid-1970s. He soon finds himself at a Canadian Armed Forces recruiting centre, where he applies to become a military pilot. Beginning with basic officer training (boot camp), through many phases of flying training, and then operational assignments, Mac experiences all that the military has to offer; the best – camaraderie, mentorship, and the opportunity to fly and learn new skills – and the worst – a ‘Hierarchy of Loyalty’ designed to protect those at the top, layers of bureaucracy, and equipment that puts soldiers’ lives at risk. During his two decades of service, Mac meets the ‘Believers’, those who think the military has a real combat capability, and the ‘Deceivers’, those who know better but go along for career purposes. Despite these players, he has an interesting career that includes Tactical and Search and Rescue helicopter, and VIP fixed-wing flying. That is, until he encounters the ‘Star Chamber’ workings of the military’s investigative process and then must also fight the misdiagnosis of a deadly disease. These dealings expose the need for effective representation of military members in conflict with unchecked authority. Mac can only rely on his own allies: perseverance and self-reliance. Written by a military pilot, this semi-autobiographical story is a must read for anyone who is interested in aviation, has experience with the Canadian military, or is interested in a military career.

Book excerpt: Command and leadership are very personal endeavours. The manner in which an individual commands others and exercises leadership speaks more to the character and personality of the individual in question than it does to the concept of command or leadership in and of themselves. Intrepid Warriors takes an intimate look at a number of Canada’s finest military commanders and leaders during the crucible of war. Collectively, the chapters in this volume offer invaluable insights into different command and leadership approaches, behaviours, and styles. They also reinforce the timeless truth that the character and presence of courageous leaders are critical to military outcomes, particularly during times of ambiguity, uncertainty, and chaos.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2021, a sexual misconduct scandal struck the Canadian military, leading to a profound crisis in leadership. While some more recent allegations came to light before the #MeToo movement, these latest revelations have historical roots in the 1990s, an era known to service members as the “decade of darkness.” Due to drastic budget cuts and allegations of serious crimes perpetrated by its members, the last decade of the twentieth century was a tumultuous time for the Canadian Armed Forces. Amid this period, a human rights tribunal ordered the military to open its combat positions to women and reach full gender integration by 1999. Yet by 2021, women made up only 16.3 per cent of personnel; women and LGBTQ+ service members continue to face sexual harassment and abuse at all levels. In The Ones We Let Down Charlotte Duval-Lantoine looks at failed efforts to achieve gender parity during the 1990s. She reveals an organization unwilling and unable to change, and attitudes held by military leaders that fed a destructive dynamic and cost lives. As the military grapples with its failure to address cultural misconduct and change its culture, The Ones We Let Down reflects on whether the right lessons were learned from the decade of darkness.

Book Leadership

  • Author : Rick Hillier
  • Publisher : HarperCollins Canada
  • Release : 2010-10-26
  • ISBN : 144340442X
  • Pages : 277 pages

Download or read book Leadership written by Rick Hillier and published by HarperCollins Canada. This book was released on 2010-10-26 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: General Rick Hillier’s views on leadership evolved over his three decades as a soldier. Early in his career he watched as many of his superiors made bad decisions. Later he learned at the school of hard knocks as the head of emergency rescue operations in Canada and international task forces in eastern Europe and Afghanistan. Never one to be shy with his opinions, Hillier is as frank and straightforward in Leadership as he is in his #1 bestselling memoir, A Soldier First. For Hillier, leadership is all about people—embracing those you are in charge of and winning over those you need to work with—not about risk aversion or management fads. Leaders think long and have a plan. Their actions speak, not their words, and they make their own luck. But leaders also act out of moral courage, take advantage of crises, accept failure and remain perpetually optimistic. Whether on the front lines of a business or in any situation that requires strong communication and vision, leaders go with their gut and make the tough decisions look easy. Leadership is an inspirational, easy-to-read and, in true Hillier fashion, often humorous collection of fifty principles that will challenge the way you run your business, start a project or take that next step in life.
