Book Leadership in the Australian Context

Download or read book Leadership in the Australian Context written by Carol Dalglish and published by Tilde Publishing and Distribution. This book was released on 2011-03 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Little is known of how leadership actually happens in the Australian context. Most of the theory and case study material in leadership is drawn from the US. And, even within the US literature, leadership examples are most frequently drawn from the business arena and focus largely on anglo-celtic men. This is not a true reflection of the diversity of Australian society nor of leaders in Australia. Leadership in the Australian Context: Case Studies in Leadership provides both a summary of leadership theory and a theoretical framework for understanding the practice of leadership. It then offers in-depth case studies of 11 Australian leaders drawn from across business, politics, the public and not-for-profit sectors as well as across age groups and gender. From these case studies is drawn a synopsis of what these leaders have in common and what the key factors are to successful leadership in the Australian context.

Book The Australian Leadership Paradox

Download or read book The Australian Leadership Paradox written by Geoff Aigner and published by Allen & Unwin. This book was released on 2013-08-01 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why are Australian leaders so reluctant to acknowledge the power they have and unsure what to do with it? Australian Leadership Paradox claims Australians have a serious problem with leadership. It explains the cultural roots of this problem, and ways we can become more purposeful leaders. Australians bemoan the quality of our leaders. We blame those in power for not showing leadership, only to turn on them when they start tackling the hard issues they are expected to fix. No wonder that even the most passionate and talented among us hesitate to take up this important role. The Australian Leadership Paradox offers us a circuit breaker for this impasse, providing new insights into Australia's distinct leadership culture and showing us a new way forward. It exposes the inherent tensions in Australians' historical relationship with authority; interrogates our culture of mateship and egalitarianism, and challenges the narrative of a nation of Aussies battling adversity when we are actually living in 'the lucky country'. These tensions are the paradoxes of Australian leadership. Drawing on their extensive experience working with hundreds of leaders from government, business and community organisations, Geoff Aigner and Liz Skelton show how it's possible for Australian leadership to be inspiring, sustainable and effective - and how we can participate in creating the change we want to see in the world. 'Aigner and Skelton challenge our understanding of what leadership characteristics are needed in the Australian context, with every page presenting new insights and possibilities. a fascinating portrayal of how leadership is exercised in our institutions but leaves us yearning for something much better.' - Robert Fitzgerald AM, Commissioner, Productivity Commission '.in the tradition of Donald Horne's The Lucky Country. this book challenges us to rise above complacency and complaint and accept that leadership and power are needed for progress.' - Professor Geoff Gallop, former Premier of Western Australia 'This is a reaffirming and engaging book and will be my new recommended read for people trying to understand the complexity of leadership in Australia. There is warmth and optimism about creating a new Australian leadership story which makes it all seem possible.' - Wendy McCarthy AO

Book Leadership Secrets of the Australian Army

Download or read book Leadership Secrets of the Australian Army written by Nicholas Jans and published by Allen & Unwin. This book was released on 2018-05-23 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Australia's military consistently punches above its weight, and its approach to leadership is the key to its success. Developed over a century ago by fusing national values with battlefield imperatives, its approach has been fine-tuned over generations. It is now an adaptable and egalitarian leadership culture that ticks all the boxes for best practice. The military assumes no-one is born a natural leader, and that good training makes good leaders. Drawing on his own long military career and defence training programs, and on research, Nick Jans has identified the core principles of this consistently successful approach to leadership. These '3Rs' are the leadership skills which generate loyalty and commitment at an operational level, and they are just as successful in everyday team management as they are in the field. Leadership Secrets of the Australian Army includes real stories from the field and from workplaces, from everyday employees and from well-known leaders. It shows how you too can become a leader your team can believe in, and-equally importantly-how you can help them believe in themselves. 'Read it and be wise.' Lieutenant General David Morrison, AO

Book excerpt: Abstract: "The nature and expectations of public sector leaders have shifted in line with whole-of-government efforts that emphasise coordination and collaboration. This requires a renewed focus in the way public sector leadership is conceived, developed, and evaluated. To this end, academics have argued for greater theoretical development in the application of collective leadership theory to the public sector and, in particular, framing leadership as a group-level phenomenon. This thesis explores the notion of group-level leadership, termed 'organisational leadership', in the public sector within an Australian context."

Book Leadership in Diverse Learning Contexts

Download or read book Leadership in Diverse Learning Contexts written by Greer Johnson and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-04-29 with total page 431 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the outcomes of research and practical endeavour in some of the diverse contexts in which learning takes place: classrooms, schools, professional development settings, community projects and service sector agencies. It invites the reader to engage with two related questions of contemporary concern in the leadership field: "What can we learn about the important influence of different contexts on leadership practice and how are people brought together as collective human agents in different patterns of distributive leadership?" In doing so, this collection emphasises three of the critical concepts at play when leadership is viewed, not as position, but as activity. The three concepts are purpose, context and human agency. When this view of leadership is understood, it is always about achieving shared goals with people power, no matter the circumstances in which they are gathered together.

Download or read book Leadership in Action written by Ashley Goldsworthy and published by Dog Ear Publishing. This book was released on 2009-06 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is a very practical exploration of leadership. The author draws on his extensive experience in a variety of senior roles to put the theory of leadership in an envelope of reality. Leadership is about people, about getting people to do what you want them to do, even when they might be inclined to do otherwise. It is about encouraging, convincing, exhorting, motivating and generally getting human beings to do something they would not have done without your intervention. Leadership is a process. It is not a set of characteristics, it is not charisma, it is not a position, it is not a role. It is a process-a process involving people. It is about those who lead and those who are led. It is about those who challenge and those who accept. It is also about helping people to achieve their goals as well, both as individuals and groups. Ashley Goldsworthy is in a unique position to write a book on Leadership. In a career spanning over 55 years he has been CEO of Australia's largest construction company; a retail bank; the Australian Computer Society; deputy to the CEO of a large insurance company; chairman of an international construction company; Director of Economic Statistics for the Australian Government; Dean of the Business School at Australia's first private university; one of Australia's first Professors of Leadership; Federal President of the Liberal Party of Australia; World President of the International Federation for Information Processing; director of one of Australia's largest casinos; founding chairman of a university Centre for International Research on Communication and Information Technologies; chairman/director of performing arts companies in ballet, theatre and circus; chairman of several companies ranging across human resources, accounting, financial services, healthcare, computer systems, and vocational education and training. He has degrees in accounting, business, public administration, science, and theology.

Download or read book Global Citizenship Education in Australian Schools written by Andrew Peterson and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-09-26 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores how Australian secondary schools prepare their students for global citizenship. Globalisation has irrevocably changed modern countries and societies, and the benefits and pressures this brings are being felt as never before. Drawing on empirical data from six Australian secondary schools, the author examines how school leaders and teachers understand global citizenship, how they translate this into their practice, and how students experience and make sense of global citizenship education. In doing so, the book portrays how school leaders, teachers and students grapple with key issues central to global citizenship education, including how they work to mediate some of the tensions involved. While the book concentrates on the Australian context, its findings and analysis have resonance for other countries in which global citizenship education operates as a core goal of education and schooling.
