Book Leadership in Agriculture

Download or read book Leadership in Agriculture written by John Patrick Jordan and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book was released on 2013-04-18 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a world facing chronic and increasing shortages in food crops and natural resources, visionary leadership in agriculture becomes more and more critical for building and maintaining a sustainable future. It is of paramount importance that the dynamic and challenging evolution in agriculture over the last century and a half be met today with imaginative leadership in virtually all aspects of activities and organizations involved. Leadership in Agriculture: Case Studies for a New Generation focuses on key characteristics and elements of leadership. Using case studies from research, industry, education, administration, and extension services, the authors present real-world circumstances ranging from natural disasters to major restructuring that demanded problem solving, new initiatives, consensus, and organizational commitment. Drawing on their own experiences and covering topics as diverse as closing facilities, mounting a national research initiative, reinventing a major corporation, and dealing with invasive termites, the studies contain examples of both good and bad outcomes and tie back to the stated leadership principles and qualities. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Together We Can recounts effective strategies for institutional change and focuses on collective leadership within the land-grant university system, with reflections on Hiler’s long and successful career in academic leadership, both at Texas A&M University and within the larger Texas A&M System. Although many books discuss leadership and organizational change in the private sector, there are relatively few dealing with public-sector entities—especially public land-grant universities and academic agencies—and none on collective leadership, the standard for highly collaborative and interdependent groups and individuals. Hiler draws on more than four decades of academic leadership experiences and personal anecdotes to recount the history of the land-grant system and Texas’ place in it. He also distills collective leadership “principles-in-action” that he believes should sustain such institutions, including Texas A&M, in the future, articulating an unwavering argument that the land-grant mission, through teaching, research, and outreach through extension, remains the single most powerful educational force within our society to equip citizens with the means to adapt to create meaningful opportunities, improve quality of life, and keep the world on a sustainable course amid uncertain times. Bosserman then places Hiler’s reflections in the context of institutional change strategies and situational leadership styles to establish a “do-it-yourself tool kit” that includes effective leadership, collaboration, and mentorship approaches and techniques for those who strive to make a positive impact in their organizations, regardless of their starting point.

Book Exploring the Leadership Development of Undergraduate Students of Agriculture at The Ohio State University

Download or read book Exploring the Leadership Development of Undergraduate Students of Agriculture at The Ohio State University written by Kaitlyn Anne Murray and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a need for more leaders who are working to disrupt pervasive, systematic injustices and promote positive social change in agriculture and higher education. Colleges of agriculture and related sciences have recognized their role in preparing future leaders and responded to this charge, yet students of agriculture are not exhibiting the leadership behaviors that society and employers need. In a series of three studies, the author explored the leadership development of students of agriculture at The Ohio State University. The first study was a secondary analysis of campus data from the 2010, 2012, and 2015 Multi-Institutional Study of Leadership (MSL) in order to explore the trends, similarities, and differences in leadership outcomes by major field of study. Results indicated that respondents who identified their major as agriculture did not differ from non-agricultural students in leadership capacity or leadership self-efficacy. However, while at college, students of agriculture reported significantly lower levels of engagement in socio-cultural discussions that non-agriculture students, but higher levels of mentoring by others. The results of this study imply a greater need for opportunities for students in agriculture to engage in conversations of personal and global importance with their peers. By conducting this study, the researcher was able to identify an additional need to specifically investigate how mentoring relates to leadership development in students of agriculture.

Book excerpt: Do you struggle to lead Millennials and Centennials while maintaining a healthy balance of results and relationships? Zach Thomas began his leadership journey as a chicken farmer, attended the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, served as an Army Ranger instructor, and a college pastor, but none of this adequately prepared him for the challenge of leading a team of 100 young adults when he became a Chick-fil-A franchisee in 2008. Instead, this Gen Xer found himself in over his head and unable to find the right leadership style to balance results and relationships. After he and his wife both survived near-death experiences, Zach began to develop a new leadership strategy that connected with his team. This strategy grew sales at Zach's restaurant by 100%, maintained a turnover rate 38.7% lower than the Chick-fil-A chain-wide average (which is already one of the lowest in the industry), and enabled Zach to develop three franchisees who now lead their own restaurants. In this book, Zach joins forces with author and researcher Jared Stump-who just so happens to be a Millennial-to address the challenges of employee engagement, turnover, recruiting, and leadership development that many leaders face. Leader Farming is a proven approach that will give employers the edge they need to win the "war for talent" in a Millennial and Centennial-dominated workforce as they learn how to balance freedom and discipline, develop leaders, and build a sustainable business without burning themselves out.
