Book excerpt: Colonel Slife chronicles the influence of the late Gen Wilbur L. "Bill" Creech7a leader, visionary, warrior, and mentor7in the areas of equipment and tactics, training, organization, and leader development. His study serves both to explain the context of a turbulent time in our Air Force's history and to reveal where tomorrow's airmen may find answers to some of the difficult challenges facing them today. Colonel Slife, who addresses such controversial topics as the development of the Army's AirLand Battle doctrine and what it meant to airmen, is among the first to describe what historians will surely see in years to come as the revolutionary developments of the late 1970s/early 1980s and General Creech's central role. Creech Blue enlightens the Air Force on its strongly held convictions during that period and challenges the idea that by 1990, when Iraq invaded Kuwait, the Air Force had forgotten how to wage a "strategic" air campaign and was dangerously close to plunging into a costly and lengthy war of attrition had it not been for the vision of a small cadre of thinkers on the Air Staff. In exploring the doctrine and language of the decade leading up to Operation Desert Storm, Colonel Slife reveals that the Air Force was not as shortsighted as many people have argued.

  • Author : Donald Vandergriff
  • Publisher : Naval Institute Press

  • Pages : 305 pages

Download or read book Adopting Mission Command written by Donald Vandergriff and published by Naval Institute Press. This book was released on 2019-09-15 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In September 2010, James G. Pierce, a retired U.S. Army colonel with the Strategic Studies Institute at the U.S. Army War College in Carlisle Barracks, Pennsylvania, published a study on Army organizational culture. Pierce postulated that "the ability of a professional organization to develop future leaders in a manner that perpetuates readiness to cope with future environmental and internal uncertainty depends on organizational culture." He found that today's U.S. Army leadership "may be inadequately prepared to lead the profession toward future success." The need to prepare for future success dovetails with the use of the concepts of mission command. This book offers up a set of recommendations, based on those mission command concepts, for adopting a superior command culture through education and training. Donald E. Vandergriff believes by implementing these recommendations across the Army, that other necessary and long-awaited reforms will take place.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Did Nazi war criminals deceive the United States military during the Cold War? A new book by a Canberra-based historian tells the story of how America’s most famous and influential military theorist was seduced by the lies of Hitler’s defeated generals. From the author of Panzer Commander Hermann Balck and False Flags comes The Blind Strategist: John Boyd and the American Art of War. Colonel John Boyd, a maverick fighter pilot, revolutionized the American art of war through his ideas on conflict and the human mind. Boyd claimed that victory is won by the side which transitions through 'decision cycles' faster than the enemy and his ideas gained influential converts in the Pentagon who were seeking a new way of waging war after defeat in Vietnam. Although Boyd’s theories became the basis of American military doctrine, he relied upon the fraudulent testimony of former Nazi generals who fabricated historical evidence to disassociate their reputations from their defeat and cover up their willing participation in war crimes. Boyd certainly changed the American art of war, but did he corrupt it in the process? The Blind Strategist separates fact from fantasy and exposes the myths of maneuver warfare through a detailed evidence-based investigation. Discover how maneuver warfare has resulted in catastrophic decisions in this must-read for anybody interested in American military history.

Book Evaluation of a Job Aid System for Combat Leaders

Download or read book Evaluation of a Job Aid System for Combat Leaders written by Elisabeth B. Evensen and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The modern combat leader must make many complex decisions under conditions of great stress. However, while the leader's job has increased in level of difficulty, there are no effective, standardized job performance aids available to help the leader accomplish his job. A need therefore exists to develop and produce a job aid system of Combat Leaders' Guides. A prototype Combat Leaders' Guide: Rifle Platoon and Squad (CLG) was developed and produced using doctrinal materials relating to critical combat common tasks and tasks in skill levels 1-4 in the llB and llM Military Occupational Specialties (MOS). The CLG and a feedback form were distributed to over 1,100 active-duty and former active-duty soldiers with over 400 respondents returning their feedback forms. The CLG is also anticipated to be an important tool for soldiers to use when engaged in, and preparing for, combat missions through training and combat proficiency drills. Keywords: Light infantry, Mechanized infantry, Memory aids, Combat effectiveness, Combat leaders, Continuous operations, Combat stress.
