Book Leadership Emergence in Virtual Team Environments

Download or read book Leadership Emergence in Virtual Team Environments written by Maryam Alavi and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper reports an exploratory field study examining leadership emergence in a virtual team environment. Traditional models of leadership emergence have identified task-related contribution, speaking behavior, and powerorientation as key predictors of leadership emergence in face-to-face environments. In the proposed model ofleadership emergence in virtual team environments, we argued that an individual2s skill in using electroniccommunication technology and the use of the technology would become important predictors of leadershipemergence, while the role of speaking behavior in predicting leadership emergence would be diminishing in virtualteam environments. The proposed model was tested using a data set collected from twenty-eight virtual teamsworking over a period of ten weeks. Our data support the proposed model of leadership emergence in virtual teamenvironments. Implications for future research in leadership emergence and practice are provided.

Book Shared Leadership

Download or read book Shared Leadership written by Craig L Pearce and published by SAGE. This book was released on 2002-12-20 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Shared Leadership offers a much-needed shift in our thinking about how leadership happens in teams and organizations. Pearce and Conger have brought together a diverse group of authors who collectively offer a comprehensive view of developing, implementing, and studying shared leadership in organizations. This volume is sure to fulfill its goal of "jump-starting" our knowledge of the shared leadership phenomenon." --Cynthia D. McCauley, Ph.D., Vice President, Leadership Development, Center for Creative Leadership "How leadership is shared in teams and organizations is an important subject, but one that has received little attention in most of the leadership literature. This timely book provides a rich and varied perspective on the subject. The highly qualified collection of scholars provide a good theoretical foundation to guide the future study of shared leadership." --Gary Yukl, State University of New York at Albany "The time is as ripe as ever for a new paradigm of leadership that the authors simply call ′shared leadership.′ This timely volume effectively ′jumpstarts′ our knowledge of this emerging field by presenting a number of critical perspectives examining shared leadership using conceptual, empirical, and applied lenses." --Joe Raelin, Asa. S. Knowles Chair of Practice-Oriented Education, Northeastern University, and author of Creating Leaderful Organizations: How to Bring Out Leadership in Everyone "This volume redefines the essence of leadership. Pearce and Conger have assembled a cast of ′scholar-entrepreneurs′ whose pioneering work firmly establishes the theoretical foundations for the study of leadership now and well into the future. This book is a must read for anyone interested in leadership in the age of teamwork." --Henry P. Sims, University of Maryland In recent years, scholars have argued that leadership is an activity shared or distributed among members of a group or organization. This line of thinking is gaining attention among leadership scholars, yet our understanding of the dynamics and opportunities for shared leadership is still quite primitive. Given the infancy of the field, it is timely to introduce a volume on the subject that significantly enhances our knowledge.Shared Leadership: Reframing the Hows and Whys of Leadership brings together the foremost thinkers on the subject and is the first book of its kind to address the conceptual, methodological, and practical issues for shared leadership. Its aim is to advance understanding along many dimensions of the shared leadership phenomenon: its dynamics, moderators, appropriate settings, facilitating factors, contingencies, measurement, practice implications, and directions for the future. The volume provides a realistic and practical discussion of the benefits, as well as the risks and problems, associated with shared leadership. It will serve as an indispensable guide for researchers and practicing managers in identifying where and when shared leadership may be appropriate for organizations and teams. Edited by leading authorities Craig L. Pearce and Jay A. Conger, with contributions from the top experts in the field, Shared Leadership is an ideal text for management, education, and communication courses in leadership, teamwork, organizational behavior, and small groups. In addition, practicing consultants will find this an invaluable reference in their leadership and team development programs.

Book A Multi level Investigation of Emergent Leadership and Dispersion Effects in Virtual Teams

Download or read book A Multi level Investigation of Emergent Leadership and Dispersion Effects in Virtual Teams written by Steven Daniel Charlier and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the individual level, the model provides a theoretical linkage between communication behaviors and several outcomes, including team member perceptions/attributions and, ultimately, emergent leadership. At the team level, the model also incorporates the effect of leadership pattern differences across teams, as well as differences in level of virtuality, on overall team performance. Based on the results of an experiment involving 86 four-person teams, it was found that configuration and collocation have significant effects on team performance and peer perceptions of individual team members. A curvilinear relationship was found between the level of dispersion among team members and team performance, such that performance generally decreased as team dispersion increased, yet performance improved at the high end of the dispersion continuum. Collocation also had strong positive effects on perceptions of trust, ability, and leadership emergence. In terms of the relationships between communication-related behaviors and emergent leadership, task-based communications proved to be the strongest predictor of emergent leadership. The use of texting language was positively associated with perceptions of leadership emergence as well. These results have significant practical implications for the design of virtual teams from both a team configuration and a team member skills/individual differences perspective. Several avenues of future research are also discussed.

This Handbook presents a forward-looking review of IO psychology's understanding of both workplace technology and how technology is used in IO research methods. Using interdisciplinary perspectives to further this understanding and serving as a focal text from which this research will grow, it tackles three main questions facing the field. First, how has technology affected IO psychological theory and practice to date? Second, given the current trends in both research and practice, could IO psychological theories be rendered obsolete? Third, what are the highest priorities for both research and practice to ensure IO psychology remains appropriately engaged with technology moving forward?

Book Managing Virtual Teams

Download or read book Managing Virtual Teams written by Joai Heitor Santos and published by . This book was released on 2017-11 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Globalization and advances in technology have given ways to the emergence of virtual teams. Virtual teams are those teams in which the members are interacting in an online environment, while being located in different geographic locations and coming, usually, from different cultural background. Managing a team with such complexities involves lot of efforts and dedication. A manager who has shifted from a traditional team where people work under the same roof, to a virtual team, finds it difficult to manage the team. To manage a virtual team, it is not just the responsibility of the manager, but also the team members, who are equally responsible to manage and nurture it. This book helps the reader to get a grasp of virtual teams and their management, along with the challenges and strategies involved in team management. To be specific, the book helps readers understand the changes that occur in the middle of the project. Managing the changes in a virtual team demands the involvement of the team members and facilitators to overcome the hurdles. This book covers a wide range of prospects from managing virtual teams, and overcoming the challenges faced while managing such complex teams. Chapter 1 of this book gives us a brief description about what exactly virtual teams are and how they are different from the traditional teams. In this chapter, we come across and discuss situations and challenges which are responsible for the instability of such teams. Chapter 2 sheds light on the development of the team and the importance of developing a virtual team. Chapter 3 provides an insight on the methods which are required to establish effective communication and collaboration within the team. Effective communication acts as a binding tool for the virtual team members. Effective communication and collaboration are the most important factors in managing virtual teams, due to the fact that the team members are not physically connected to each other. Chapter 4 and 5 delivers the full review of leadership management, and towards the later part, it leads to conflict management in the team. It also discusses about the processes involved in forming and manage these teams effectively. It is important to understand that, while managing these teams and establishing effective communication within the teams, many challenges are encountered by leaders as well as by team members. In chapter 6, all such challenges have been discussed with appropriate solutions to handle those challenges. Along the same line, chapter 7 delivers the steps involved in managing the changes, which occur in the middle of the virtual project. Following the changes, the most important factor in managing the virtual team is conducting the meetings for team members sitting in virtual, scattered locations. For discussion on those virtual meetings, chapter 8 has been framed to highlight the tools involve in facilitating the virtual meetings. After following the set procedures, protocols and management guidelines, the most important factor in managing the virtual teams is, evaluation of success. It is essential to evaluate the progress report of the team members, so that the leader or the manager is able to understand the loopholes prevailing in the team, and is able to tackle them on time without delaying the project. For evaluation purposes, chapter 9, explains the dynamic role of metrics in a virtual team and also the role of technical tools which help in analysing and evaluating the success rate of the project.A separate chapter on case studies is also included, to give an idea about how various organizations manage virtual teams and what kind of strategies are adopted to maximize the performance of the members in a virtual team environment. This book intends to teach and guide readers on how the emergence of virtual teams has changed the working style of the corporate sector. This book helps us to understand the ambiguity and complexities associated with virtual teams and what are the key parameters that are critical to managing a virtual team in the most efficient way. The book lends us the opportunity to deal with all the challenges which might prevail in a virtual team environment.
