Book excerpt: Excerpt from Leaders of Early Christian Thought This book is offered, in the first instance, to thoughtful persons who, whether or not they contemplate a systematic study of Christian theology, are interested in the history of the subject, but who are often, at the outset, bewildered by the massively detailed expositions in the larger works on the History of Christian Doctrine. I have, I hope, been helped to avoid a mere 'sketch' of the main aspects of the subject by approaching it in the light of certain principles of fundamental importance. (i) As a matter of fact, there has been a 'main stream' in the history of Christian Thought, in which doctrines and beliefs which have been historically vital to Christianity have survived through periods sometimes of embittered controversy and confusion. But it has not been a mere 'survival.' The canonical Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments have been, and are, its primary source. But the authority of the Scriptures and their interpretation inevitably gave rise to questions which could not be directly decided by quotations from the Scriptures themselves, and which, therefore, necessarily led to a development of Christian doctrine. (ii) The very idea of development, in reference to the history of Christian doctrine, brings us to face the conclusion powerfully argued by the greatest Christian scholar of the last century. Adolf Harnack, with a vast knowledge of the relevant facts, brought to his interpretation of the facts a guiding idea of which there is no proof adequate to the radical conclusion which he derived from it, and which is defended, though in a less extreme form, by some recent theologians. The question is therefore one of contemporary importance. Harnack saw in the history of Christian doctrines (which he always described as 'dogmas'), and in the history of the Church at large, an alien philosophical method and an illegitimate growth of ecclesiastical authority. Two sources of new light may be mentioned here. One is the study of Comparative Religion; practices which by them selves are obscure, frequently become clear when compared with corresponding practices elsewhere. A simple example is the modern custom of wear ing black, when a friend has been lost by death. When we compare the customs of other times and other nations under similar circumstances, we find that some people wear white clothes or smear themselves with yellow ochre; in some tribes the men disguise themselves as women; or again, after a funeral they enter the house by the back door, or take refuge in a subterraneous cave. The meaning is now apparent. All these steps are taken in order that the ghost of the dead man may be baffled. Thus light is thrown upon primitive ideas about the dead. We see (1) that the activity of each individual is supposed to continue even after death; (2) that this activity is likely to be of a malevolent character; and (3) that the ghost can easily be cheated by the most transparent devices. Incidentally we also see the reason for other practices, such as the bolting and barring of windows and doors after a death has v111. In the effort to gratify that interest and curiosity, the author has studied to preserve impartiality; but he has not attempted to write the history of the Christian Church in a tone Of unconcern for either Christianity or the Church. The historian who w'ould do justice to the men whose actions he records, whether in civil or ecclesiastical polity, must place himself in sympathy with each age that comes under review; and the historian of the Church must have such sympathy - though not in the spirit of a partisan - With the thoughts and feelings, both of the great teachers and leaders and of the whole body of Christians, and even of the several parties, in every age of the Church. These three centuries, therefore, form our first age, that of the Primitive and Persecuted Church: during which we trace the rise and progress of the Church, till the little leaven leavens the Roman Empire and works beyond its bounds; the settlement of its constitution; the development of its doctrines and usages and the beginnings of most of the controversies which have agitated it ever since.
