Book Self Diffusion of Sulfur 35 in Single Crystals of Lead Sulfide

Download or read book Self Diffusion of Sulfur 35 in Single Crystals of Lead Sulfide written by and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page 41 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The diffusion of radioactive sulfur (S35) into single crystals of lead sulfide has been studied as a function of deviation from stoichiometry and defect concentration introduced by doping, in the temperature range 773 degK to 1023 degK, in order to determine the predominant mechanism by which the anion diffuses in this compound. Measurements have been made using crystals whose composition varied from 3 x 10 (exp 18) excess sulfur atoms per cc. to 5 x 10 (exp 18) excess lead atoms per cc. The sulfur excess specimens showed the highest diffusivities in this temperature range, whereas lowest diffusion coefficients were obtained in the lead excess specimens. Diffusion measurements have also been performed on specimens doped with 0.5 or 0.05 mole percent Ag2S or Bi2S3 which were annealed under the same conditions as those required to obtain undoped stoichiometric PbS crystals. Results indicate that the nature of the bonding forces between the components of PbS may be the most important single factor in determining the process by which diffusion occurs in partially polar compounds. The data is consistent with Jumps of divalent, negatively charged sulfur ions into anion vacancies as a mode of diffusion only in PbS containing a large excess of lead. In lead sulfide containing excess of sulfur, or small excess lead concentrations, sulfur is believed to diffuse primarily as a small, positively charged species, by jumps into vacancies in the cation sublattice, or by sole interstitial mechanism.

Book Diffusion of Sulfur 35 in Single Crystals of Lead Sulfide as a Function of Stoichiometry and Doping Additions

Download or read book Diffusion of Sulfur 35 in Single Crystals of Lead Sulfide as a Function of Stoichiometry and Doping Additions written by M. S. Seltzer and published by . This book was released on 1964 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Self-diffusion of sulfur 35 in single crystals of lead sulfide was studied as a function of temperature, sulfur pressure and foreign atom additions. The primary conclusions of these studies are: (a) sulfur diffuses as rapidly as or more rapidly than lead in single crystals of PbS, (b) sulfur does not diffuse via jumps into sulfur vacancies. In addition sulfur was inferred to diffuse via several simultaneous mechanisms, the predominant one depending on the experimental variables. The probable predominant mechanisms in undoped PbS are: (1) In crystals with an excess of sulfur, sulfur diffuses as an atomic rather than as an ionic species, by an interstitial mechanism, or via electrically neutral vacancies in the lead sublattice; (2) In crystals with an excess of lead, sulfur diffuses via a neutral defect pair. Sulfur diffuses through lead sulfide heavily doped with the acceptor silver by the same mechanisms that are predominant in undoped PbS. This is evidence by the lack of influence of silver concentration on diffusivities in the temperature range 500-750C, which serves to substantiate the neutral electrical nature of the defects responsible for diffusion in undoped PbS. For lead sulfide doped with the donor bismuth, sulfur diffusion at 700C occurs by the same mechanisms as are predominant in undoped PbS over the entire homogeneity range for the compound. At lower temperatures, jumps of sulfur into ionized lead vacancy acceptors, such as V'Pb may contribute appreciably to the total diffusion. (Author).

Book Nanostructured Lead Cadmium and Silver Sulfides

Download or read book Nanostructured Lead Cadmium and Silver Sulfides written by Stanislav I. Sadovnikov and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-09-02 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents and analyzes the influence of small size particles of lead, cadmium and silver sulfide on the properties of nonstoichiometric semiconductors. Important nonstoichiometry aspects in nanostructures are discussed, such as the distribution of sulfur atoms in nanofilms, a non-periodic distribution of the atomic planes in nanoparticles, interdependent changes in crystal structure of nanocrystalline material. Tuning the stoichiometry allows to obtain superionic conductivity and catalytic activity under visible light. The wavelength of the luminescence of nanoparticles changes with the size of the nanoparticles. Various methods to prepare nanostructured sulfides are described. Special attention is given to the hydrochemical bath deposition as a universal method for the synthesis of sulfides as nanofilms, stable colloidal solutions, quantum dots, isolated nanoparticles with a protective shell and heteronanostructures. The effect of nanoparticle size and nonstoichiometry on the band gap, optical and thermal properties of nanostructured sulfides is also considered. The novel applications of sulfide nanoparticles in nanoelectronics, catalysis, nanobiology and nanomedicine are sketched.

Book Optical Constants of Crystalline and Amorphous Semiconductors

Download or read book Optical Constants of Crystalline and Amorphous Semiconductors written by Sadao Adachi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-27 with total page 725 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Knowledge of the refractive indices and absorption coefficients of semiconductors is especially import in the design and analysis of optical and optoelectronic devices. The determination of the optical constants of semiconductors at energies beyond the fundamental absorption edge is also known to be a powerful way of studying the electronic energy-band structures of the semiconductors. The purpose of this book is to give tabulated values and graphical information on the optical constants of the most popular semiconductors over the entire spectral range. This book presents data on the optical constants of crystalline and amorphous semiconductors. A complete set of the optical constants are presented in this book. They are: the complex dielectric constant (E=e.+ieJ, complex refractive index (n*=n+ik), absorption coefficient (a.), and normal-incidence reflectivity (R). The semiconductor materials considered in this book are the group-IV elemental and binary, llI-V, IT-VI, IV-VI binary semiconductors, and their alloys. The reader will fmd the companion book "Optical Properties of Crystalline and Amorphous Semiconductors: Materials and Fundamental Principles" useful since it emphasizes the basic material properties and fundamental prinCiples.

Book Toxicology in Antiquity

Download or read book Toxicology in Antiquity written by and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2018-10-22 with total page 511 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Toxicology in Antiquity provides an authoritative and fascinating exploration into the use of toxins and poisons in antiquity. It brings together the two previously published shorter volumes on the topic, as well as adding considerable new information. Part of the History of Toxicology and Environmental Health series, it covers key accomplishments, scientists, and events in the broad field of toxicology, including environmental health and chemical safety. This first volume sets the tone for the series and starts at the very beginning, historically speaking, with a look at toxicology in ancient times. The book explains that before scientific research methods were developed, toxicology thrived as a very practical discipline. People living in ancient civilizations readily learned to distinguish safe substances from hazardous ones, how to avoid these hazardous substances, and how to use them to inflict harm on enemies. It also describes scholars who compiled compendia of toxic agents. New chapters in this edition focus chiefly on evidence for the use of toxic agents derived from religious texts. - Provides the historical background for understanding modern toxicology - Illustrates the ways previous civilizations learned to distinguish safe from hazardous substances, how to avoid the hazardous substances and how to use them against enemies - Explores the way famous historical figures used toxins - New chapters focus on evidence of the use of toxins derived from religious texts

Book The Self Diffusion of Lead 210 in Single Crystals of Lead Sulfide as a Function of Stoichiometry and Doping Additions

Download or read book The Self Diffusion of Lead 210 in Single Crystals of Lead Sulfide as a Function of Stoichiometry and Doping Additions written by GEORGE. SIMKOVICH and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page 1 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Measurements of the self diffusion of Pb-210 into undoped and doped single crystals of Pbs of known dislocation density have shown that in the temperature range of 500 to 800 C, the diffusion is predominantly via Frenkel defects. In the case of n-type, undoped PbS and p-type, Ag doped PbS the diffusion coefficients were larger than for undoped, stoichiometric PbS. Conversely for p-type, S excess undoped PbS and for n-type, Bi doped solid solutions, the diffusion coefficients were larger than for undoped stoichiometric PbS. (Author).
