Book Lead Ores Classic Reprint

Download or read book Lead Ores Classic Reprint written by T. C. F. Hall and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-14 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lead Ores Lead, although one of the commoner of the base metals, is present in the earth's crust only to the extent of a fraction of I per cent. Of the whole. In workable deposits, however, the proportion is much higher owing to a natural concentration of material. Lead is closely associated in nature with zinc, and their primary or sulphide ores commonly occur together. Zinc ores are more soluble than lead ores, hence in the zone of oxidation the former have frequently been leached away, and practically pure lead ore may occur above water - level. In this way were formed the lead carbonate deposits of Lead ville and elsewhere. Such bodies, however, give place to mixed lead and zinc sulphides in depth. Lead in nature is also intimately associated with silver, and many lead deposits are also the repositories of valuable silver ores. Galena itself is frequently argentiferous and may be regarded as the chief source of the world's supply of silver. Book Lead Silver Lead and Zinc Ores of Cornwall Devon and Somerset Classic Reprint

Download or read book Lead Silver Lead and Zinc Ores of Cornwall Devon and Somerset Classic Reprint written by Henry Dewey and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-12-03 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lead, Silver-Lead and Zinc Ores of Cornwall, Devon and Somerset Lead-ores. - On the map it will be seen that each granite mass is surrounded by a belt of highly metamorphosed rocks, and that the lead lodes never occur in the granite and seldom in these belts. The country rock is either a sediment or, more rarely, lava or ash, and never an igneous rock Of intrusive origin. There is a significant association of lead-ore with argillaceous sediments, which is apparently general in Cornwall and Devon; and lodes which course through interfolded beds of Slaty and sandy killas are rich in the former and barren in the latter. This phenomenon is well illustrated by sections (plates III and IV) where the stoped ground is entirely in Shaly killas. The Beer Alston lodes were rich in lead-ore while in Slate, but became barren near the granite. Most of the lodes course from north to south; a few, and those rich ones, course nearly north-east, and one or two in other directions. Book Metallurgy of Lead Classic Reprint

Download or read book Metallurgy of Lead Classic Reprint written by H. O. Hofman and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-07 with total page 684 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Metallurgy of Lead The first discovery of argentiferous lead ore was made in 1863 in Little Cottonwood Canyon, Utah; the first smelting of such ores was carried on in 1865 at Argenta, Mont; in 1867 similar ores were found at White Pine, Nev., and smelting was begun at Oreana, Nev. In 1869 the mines of Eureka, Nev discovered in 1864, were opened up, and the treatment of ores was begun in the following year. Next came Utah, where smelteries were erected in 1870, followed by Colorado, which came into prominence in 1878. Later Idaho, New Mexico, and Arizona were added to the list. Colorado for many years was the largest producer of lead ores, but it has been outranked by Idaho and Utah since the exhaustion of the wonderful mines of Leadville after 1890; it furnishes at present only 6 - 7 per cent. Of the country's product, and this high figure is largely due to the central smelting works of Denver and Pueblo which treat more lead ore mined outside of the state than produced in it. The manner in which prehistoric people extracted lead from ore is unknown. If we recall that oxide and sulphide ores readily give up lead when heated with charcoal, we can imagine that the accidental discovery of this fact may have led to the most primitive furnace, a small pit dug into the ground and enclosed by stones to form a small shaft. If at first such furnaces were worked by natural draft, blast (reeds, bellows) must have been applied to produce the temperature required to form slag. The furnaces (cavity 30 in. Deep, side-walls 26 in. High, 2 tuyere-openings) found in Sinai in which copper ores were smelted about 4000 b.c.1 had this form; the furnaces of Laurium were similar. In early times low shaft furnaces with natural or forced draft formed the ap paratus, and charcoal the fuel. Agricola2 states that in 1556 the inhabitants of the present Austrian province of Carinthia used what may be called a closed stall with inclined bottom for treating galena; they kindled a wood fire and charged the ore upon it, whereupon lead was liberated and, trickling down the hearth, was collected in a basin. Similar contrivances, the Log-furnace and Ash-furnace, were used in smelting ores in the Mississippi valley about 1720. These were in operation until 1836, when the first Scotch ere-hearth was erected. Percy' states that in 1730 the ore-hearth was in operation in Derbyshire, England. Book Mining and Scientific Press Vol 98

Download or read book Mining and Scientific Press Vol 98 written by T. A. Rickard and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-26 with total page 910 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mining and Scientific Press, Vol. 98: From January to June, 1909 Production was much curtailed last winter, but from May onward a great many of the mines that had been Operated at a reduced rate gradually in creased their production. New mines became active, mainly in Utah and Nevada, and at the moment, the production of copper is probably as large as it has ever been. There is every probability of this con dition continuing during 1909, for there are no great fears of stocks accumulating. It is true, in Europe, the visible supplies, which about two years ago were below tons, are now about tons, but that is not at all a menacing quantity when one con siders that this is the only reserve in the whole world. Lead was one of the first metals to advance after the heavy reduction in prices during the panic. The year opened at about to cents per pound at New York; with an excellent demand, especially for white lead purposes, the market improved by leaps and bounds, until in July, when cents was reached. The improvement, which was accelerated by a greatly reduced production, especially in the Western camps, could, however, not be maintained when during the year the mines were again operated in full, and from that time prices gave way from month to month. Since the hearings of the tariff re vision have been resumed in Washington, with the probability that the duty on lead and lead ores may be reduced, buyers have become rather scarce, and this helped the declining tendency, the market clos ing barely steady at at New York. Book Lead Poisoning in the Smelting and Refining of Lead Classic Reprint

Download or read book Lead Poisoning in the Smelting and Refining of Lead Classic Reprint written by Alice Hamilton and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lead Poisoning in the Smelting and Refining of Lead The last 15 or 20 years have seen great changes in the lead smelting industry of the United States. As transportation has improved, small and poorly equipped smelters which had been built near the deposits of ore have been abandoned and the tendency has been to concentrate the work of smelting and refining in a few large plants, for it has proved cheaper to ship the ore to large centers where labor is abundant, than to do the smelting in the mining districts. This change has resulted in a twofold advantage to the worker. In the first place, as these large plants are usually equipped with the latest and best machinery the amount of handwork required has been materially diminished. In the second place, the conditions under which the employees work have been improved, for large, well-built factories are usually freer from dust and fumes than are those of the old type, and newer methods of manufacture involve economies, such as the saving of poisonous volatile products which used to be allowed to escape into the air. Along with the improvement in equipment, there has been in recent years evidence of a greater interest on the part of the managers in the health and safety of their workmen, and there is probably now no plant in the United States in which some effort is not made to lessen the dangers of lead poisoning as well as to prevent accidents. As a result of these changes in most places where lead smelting is an old industry, as in southeastern Missouri, Pueblo, Denver, Leadville, East Helena, Omaha, and South Chicago, the opinion is general among physicians and townspeople, as well as among the men in the industry, that lead poisoning is far less frequent and less severe than it used to be. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fire Assay: Of Gold, Silver, and Lead in Ores and Metallurgical Products The following pages present a system of assaying, intended to cover determinations of the precious metals (silver and gold) and of lead, according to methods quite commonly recognized in the Rocky Mountain States as suited to ores and products containing the just-named metals. In reading books on the subject, the beginner in assaying is embarrassed in deciding which one of the various prescribed charges he is to employ. It has, therefore, been the aim of the author in this book to carry through a single system, which, while not the only one, would at least be definite and clear to the learner.
