Book The Carole A Study of a Medieval Dance

Download or read book The Carole A Study of a Medieval Dance written by Robert Mullally and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The carole was the principal social dance in France and England from c. 1100 to c. 1400 and was frequently mentioned in French and English medieval literature. However, it has been widely misunderstood by contributors in recent citations in dictionaries and reference books, both linguistic and musical. The carole was performed by all classes of society - kings and nobles, shepherds and servant girls. It is described as taking place both indoors and outdoors. Its central position in the life of the people is underlined by references not only in what we might call fictional texts, but also in historical (or quasi-historical) writings, in moral treatises and even in a work on astronomy. Dr Robert Mullally's focus is very much on details relevant to the history, choreography and performance of the dance as revealed in the primary sources. This methodology involves attempting to isolate the term carole from other dance terms not only in French, but also in other languages. Mullally's groundbreaking study establishes all the characteristics of this dance: etymological, choreographical, lyrical, musical and iconographical.

Book Virtues of the Indian Virtudes del indio

Download or read book Virtues of the Indian Virtudes del indio written by Bishop Juan de Palafox y Mendoza and published by Rowman & Littlefield Publishers. This book was released on 2009-01-16 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This important book is the first complete seventeenth-century treatise on Native Americans to be introduced, annotated, and translated into English. Presented in a parallel text translation, it brings the work of the controversial and powerful Bishop Juan de Palafox to non-Spanish speakers for the first time. A seminal document in the history of colonial Mexico and imperial Spain, Virtues of the Indian tells us as much about the Mexican natives as about the ideas, images, and representations upon which the Spanish Empire in America was built. Taken as a whole, this book will raise questions about the Spanish empire and the governance of New Spain's Indians. Even more significantly, it will complicate the prevailing view of Spanish imperialism and colonial society as one dominated by a unified and coherent ruling elite with common goals. The deeply-informed introduction, biographical essay, and annotations that accompany this vivid translation further explore the thoughts and actions of the dynamic and complex Palafox, contributing to a better knowledge of a key figure in the history of Spanish colonialism in the New World.

Download or read book Epic and Romance Essays on Medieval Literature Classic Reprint written by W. P. KER and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2019-02-18 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Epic and Romance Essays on Medieval Literature These essays are intended as a general description of some of the principal forms of narrative literature in the Middle Ages, and as a review Of some of the more interesting works in each period. It is hardly necessary to say that the conclusion is one in which nothing is concluded, and that whole tracts of literature have been barely touched on - the English metrical romances, the Middle High German poems, the ballads, Northern and Southern - which would require to be considered in any systematic treatment of this part of history. Download or read book Roman de la Rose written by John V. Fleming and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2015-12-08 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the Roman de la Rose had tremendous influence on the poetry of the fourteenth century, particularly on the works of Deschamps, Machaut, Froissart, and Chaucer, Professor Fleming maintains that it is important for the modern reader to understand what this influential moral satire meant to readers of the medieval period. Basing his interpretation in part on iconographic analysis of the illuminations found in more than one hundred manuscript copies of the poem, he advances a "medieval" reading of the poem. Other tools used by Mr. Fleming to get at the meaning of the poem include a study of the mythographic tradition, a logical and rhetorical analysis of the text, and an examination of formal exegetical documents of the late Middle Ages, especially the Old French commentary on the Echecs Amoureux.
