Selon une étude de marché récente, la valeur du marché mondial du sport s'élèverait à 614 milliards de dollars des Etats-Unis (dollars E.-U.), sans compter la fabrication d'équipements sportifs. Ces dernières années, les droits de l'homme et les normes du travail envisagés dans le contexte des événements sportifs, en particulier les méga-événements, ont suscité une attention considérable. Les travaux ont porté pour l'essentiel sur des questions relatives à la construction de sites sportifs, à la fabrication d'équipements sportifs et à l'incidence des événements sportifs sur les communautés locales. Dans le même temps, l'attention a aussi été appelée sur les droits de l'homme et les droits du travail des athlètes qui prennent part à des manifestations sportives professionnelles. Le présent document traite de la question spécifique de l'emploi et des conditions de travail des athlètes qui pratiquent un sport au niveau professionnel.
