Cette thèse porte, en effet, sur le travail de coordination à distance. Le travail de coordination à distance décrit les formes de travail où des salariés doivent travailler ensemble sans pour autant être dans de mêmes lieux physiques. Nous tenons à utiliser l'expression « travail de coordination à distance » afin de bien signifier que nous ne parlons pas du télétravail (qui désigne le plus souvent les salariés qui travaillent à domicile), du travail mobile (les salariés en déplacement) ou du travail en différé (de salariés qui partagent un même lieu, mais à des temps différents). Le travail de coordination à distance concerne un nombre de plus en plus important de salariés qui, avec l'implantation croissante d'Internet et de ses dérivés, sont amenés à réaliser leur travail, non pas avec leurs voisins de bureau, mais avec une pluralité d'interlocuteurs distants. Cette distance est alors tout autant physique, que professionnelle (les individus n'ont pas toujours les mêmes qualifications, compétences, valeurs), organisationnelle (ils appartiennent à des services différents de l'entreprise, voire à des organisations différentes) et communicationnelle (les moyens de communications influencent toujours en partie les possibilités et opportunités de communication). Ces différentes formes de distance, prises séparément, ne sont pas particulièrement nouvelles, mais c'est leur conjonction qui l'est. Le but de cette thèse est de montrer que le travail collectif à distance, c'est-à-dire l'activité réalisée conjointement par les salariés, rencontre des difficultés mais qu'elle conserve toujours des dimensions collectives. Il y a des malentendus, des problèmes de circulation de l'information, mais les salariés développent des apprentissages et des formes d'entraide à distance. De leur côté, les collectifs de travail, c'est-à-dire les relations d'appartenance et d'identité que les individus construisent à distance, sont affaiblis car les relations de travail collectif se forment de proche en proche dans des relations dyadiques et non dans des relations collectives
