Book Tapestry in the Renaissance

Download or read book Tapestry in the Renaissance written by Thomas P. Campbell and published by Metropolitan Museum of Art. This book was released on 2002 with total page 606 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tapestries--the art form of kings--were a principal tool used by powerful Renaissance rulers to convey their wealth and might. From 1460 to 1560, courts and churches lavished vast sums on costly weavings in silk and gold thread from designs by leading artists. In this lavishly illustrated book, the first major survey of tapestry production of this period, contributors analyze some of these & beautiful tapestries, examine the stylistic and technical development of tapestry production in the Low Countries, France, and Italy during the Renaissance, and discuss the contribution that the medium made to art, liturgy, and propaganda of the day.

Book Dissident Identities in the Early Modern Low Countries

Download or read book Dissident Identities in the Early Modern Low Countries written by Alastair Duke and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-12-05 with total page 506 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alastair Duke has long been recognized as one of the leading scholars of the early modern Netherlands, known internationally for his important work on the impact of religious change on political events which was the focus of his Reformation and Revolt in the Low Countries (1990). Bringing together an updated selection of his previously published essays - together with one entirely new chapter and two that appear in English here for the first time - this volume explores the emergence of new political and religious identities in the early modern Netherlands. Firstly it analyses the emergence of a common identity amongst the amorphous collection of states in north-western Europe that were united first under the rule of the Valois Dukes of Burgundy and later the Habsburg princes, and traces the fortunes of this notion during the political and religious conflicts that divided the Low Countries during the second half of the sixteenth century. A second group of essays considers the emergence of dissidence and opposition to the regime, and explores how this was expressed and disseminated through popular culture. Finally, the volume shows how in the age of confessionalisation and civil war, challenging issues of identity presented themselves to both dissenting groups and individuals. Taken together these essays demonstrate how these dissident identities shaped and contributed to the development of the Netherlands during the early modern period.

Book Women Diplomacy and International Politics since 1500

Download or read book Women Diplomacy and International Politics since 1500 written by Glenda Sluga and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-06-12 with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women, Diplomacy and International Politics since 1500 explores the role of women as agents of diplomacy in the trans-Atlantic world since the early modern age. Despite increasing evidence of their involvement in political life across the centuries, the core historical narrative of international politics remains notably depleted of women. This collection challenges this perspective. Chapters cover a wide range of geographical contexts, including Europe, Russia, Britain and the United States, and trace the diversity of women’s activities and the significance of their contributions. Together these essays open up the field to include a broader interpretation of diplomatic work, such as the unofficial avenues of lobbying, negotiation and political representation that made women central diplomatic players in the salons, courts and boudoirs of Europe. Through a selection of case studies, the book throws into new perspective the operations of political power in local and national domains, bridging and at times reconceptualising the relationship of the private to the public. Women, Diplomacy and International Politics since 1500 is essential reading for all those interested in the history of diplomacy and the rise of international politics over the past five centuries.

Book Unity and Discontinuity

Download or read book Unity and Discontinuity written by Krista de Jonge and published by Brepols Publishers. This book was released on 2007 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study focuses on change and continuity within the architecture of the Southern and Northern Low Countries from 1530 to 1700. Instead of looking at both regions separately and stressing the stylistic differences between the classicist North and the baroque South, the book establishes a new, common history of architecture for both parts of the Low Countries during the 17th century. Their reception of Antiquity in the guise of the Italian Renaissance, first introduced in Court circles in the early 16th century, constituted the common heritage on which they built after the political separation. The book also reassesses the position of Netherlandish architecture in the international debate on the Renaissance north of the Alps. Krista De Jonge is professor of architectural history at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven. She has published extensively on early modern Netherlandish architecture, including Burgundian and Habsburg court residences and the Renaissance problematic. Konrad A. Ottenheym is professor for architectural history at Utrecht University. His research is focussed on Dutch early modern architecture and its international connections.

Book The Low Countries at the Crossroads

Download or read book The Low Countries at the Crossroads written by Koen Ottenheym and published by Brepols Publishers. This book was released on 2013 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the diffusion of architectural inventions from the Low Countries to other parts of Europe from the late fifteenth until the end of the seventeenth century. Multiple pathways connected the architecture of the Low Countries with the world, but a coherent analysis of the phenomenon is still missing. Written by an international team of specialists, the book offers case-studies illustrating various mechanisms of transmission, such as the migration of building masters and sculptors who worked as architects abroad, networks of foreign patrons inviting Netherlandish artists, printed models and the role of foreign architects who visited the Low Countries for professional reasons. Its geographical scope is as broad as the period under review and includes all European regions where Netherlandish elements were found: from Spain to Scandinavia and from Scotland to Transylvania.
