  • Author : Malcolm Barber
  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2014-06-17
  • ISBN : 1317890396
  • Pages : 299 pages

Download or read book The Cathars written by Malcolm Barber and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-06-17 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Cathars are one of the most famous heretical movements of the late twelfth and early thirteenth centuries. They infiltrated the highest ranks of society and posed a major threat not only to the Catholic Church but also to secular authorities as well. The movement was finally smashed by the crusade and the inquisitional proceedings that followed. This new study is the first comprehensive history of the Cathars. It addresses major topics in medieval history including heresy, orthodoxy and the Crusades as well as providing a history of the social and political history of Languedoc and the rise of the Capetian dynasty. A fascinating study of the development of radical religious belief and its violent suppression.

Book The Material Culture of Sex Procreation and Marriage in Premodern Europe

Download or read book The Material Culture of Sex Procreation and Marriage in Premodern Europe written by A. McClanan and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-09-23 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This interdisciplinary anthology takes as its starting point the belief that, as the material grounds of lived experience, material culture provides an avenue of historical access to women's lives, extending beyond the reaches of textual evidence. Studies here range from utilitarian tools used in Late Roman abortion to sacred, magical or ritual objects associated with sex, procreation, and marriage in the Renaissance. Together the essays demonstrate the complex relationship between language and object, and explore the ways in which objects become forms of communication in their own right, transmitting both rather specific messages and more generalized social and cultural values.

Book Marriage Litigation in Medieval England

Download or read book Marriage Litigation in Medieval England written by Helmholz and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2007-03-26 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book tells one part of the long history of the institution of marriage. Questions concerning the formation and annulment of marriage came under the exclusive jurisdiction of the church courts during the Middle Ages. Drawing on unpublished records of these courts, Professor Helmholz describes the practical side of matrimonial jurisdiction and relates it to his outline of the formal law of marriage. He investigates the nature of the cases heard, the procedure used, the people involved and changes over the period covered, all of which add to what is known about marriage and legal practice in medieval England. The concluding assessment of canonical jurisdiction over marriage suggests that the application of the law was more successful than is usually thought.

Book The Clergy in the Medieval World

Download or read book The Clergy in the Medieval World written by Julia Barrow and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2015-01-15 with total page 471 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unlike monks and nuns, clergy have hitherto been sidelined in accounts of the Middle Ages, but they played an important role in medieval society. This first broad-ranging study in English of the secular clergy examines how ordination provided a framework for clerical life cycles and outlines the influence exerted on secular clergy by monastic ideals before tracing typical career paths for clerics. Concentrating on northern France, England and Germany in the period c.800–c.1200, Julia Barrow explores how entry into the clergy usually occurred in childhood, with parents making decisions for their sons, although other relatives, chiefly clerical uncles, were also influential. By comparing two main types of family structure, Barrow supplies an explanation of why Gregorian reformers faced little serious opposition in demanding an end to clerical marriage in the eleventh and twelfth centuries. Changes in educational provision c.1100 also help to explain growing social and geographical mobility among clerics.

  • ISBN : 1624661165
  • Pages : 582 pages

Download or read book Ancient Rome written by R. Scott Smith and published by Hackett Publishing. This book was released on 2014-03-15 with total page 582 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Terrific . . . exactly the sort of collection we have long needed: one offering a wide range of texts, both literary and documentary, and that--with the inclusion of Sulpicia and Perpetua--allows students to hear the voices of actual women from the ancient world. The translations themselves are fluid; the inclusion of long extracts allows students to sink their teeth into material in ways not possible with traditional source books. The anonymous texts, inscriptions, and other non-literary material topically arranged in the 'Documentary' section will enable students to see how the documentary evidence supplements or undermines the views advanced in the literary texts. This is a book that should be of great use to anyone teaching a survey of the history of Ancient Rome or a Roman Civilization course. I look forward to teaching with this book which is, I think, the best source book I have seen for the way we teach these days." --David Potter, University of Michigan

Book The Formation of the Medieval West

Download or read book The Formation of the Medieval West written by Michael Richter and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first extensive study of the oral culture in the early medieval West. Access to this culture is inevitably through the written sources and indeed there is quite substantial information in the sources once these are properly 'decoded'. Latin is the dominant language of the surviving contemporary records but it emerges that this language is highly inadequate to articulate the main features of the early medieval non-Latin societies. It is argued that the written sources in the period are not representative for these societies generally, which in fact had a broad based, effective and adequate oral culture. It is suggested that this situation accounts for the slow emergence of vernacular literature.
