Download or read book Hippocrates in Context written by P.J. van der Eijk and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2018-07-17 with total page 540 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of papers studies the Hippocratic writings in their relationship to the intellectual, social, cultural and literary context in which they were written. ‘Context’ includes not only the Greek world, but also the medical thought and practice of other civilisations in the Mediterranean, such as Babylonian and Egyptian medicine. A further point of interest are the relations between the Hippocratic writings and ‘non-Hippocratic’ medical authors of the fifth and fourth century BCE, such as Diocles of Carystus, Praxagoras of Cos, as well as Plato, Aristotle and Theophrastus. The collection further includes studies of some of the less well-known works in the Hippocratic Corpus, such as Internal Affections, On the Eye, and Prorrheticon. And finally, a number of papers are devoted to the impact and reception of Hippocratic thought in later antiquity and the early modern period.
Download or read book Seneca the Elder and His Rediscovered Historiae ab initio bellorum civilium written by Maria Chiara Scappaticcio and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2020-06-08 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The refreshed insights into early-imperial Roman historiography this book offers are linked to a recent discovery. In the spring of 2014, the binders of the archive of Robert Marichal were dusted off by the ERC funded project PLATINUM (ERC-StG 2014 n°636983) in response to Tiziano Dorandi’s recollections of a series of unpublished notes on Latin texts on papyrus. Among these was an in-progress edition of the Latin rolls from Herculaneum, together with Marichal’s intuition that one of them had to be ascribed to a certain ‘Annaeus Seneca’. PLATINUM followed the unpublished intuition by Robert Marichal as one path of investigation in its own research and work. Working on the Latin P.Herc. 1067 led to confirm Marichal’s intuitions and to go beyond it: P.Herc. 1067 is the only extant direct witness to Seneca the Elder’s Historiae. Bringing a new and important chapter of Latin literature arise out of a charred papyrus is significant. The present volume is made up of two complementary sections, each of which contains seven contributions. They are in close dialogue with each other, as looking at the same literary matter from several points of view yields undeniable advantages and represents an innovative and fruitful step in Latin literary criticism. These two sections express the two different but interlinked axes along which the contributions were developed. On one side, the focus is on the starting point of the debate, namely the discovery of the papyrus roll transmitting the Historiae of Seneca the Elder and how such a discovery can be integrated with prior knowledge about this historiographical work. On the other side, there is a broader view on early-imperial Roman historiography, to which the new perspectives opened by the rediscovery of Seneca the Elder’s Historiae greatly contribute.
Download or read book Concepts of Space in Greek Thought written by Keimpe Algra and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2016-06-21 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Concepts of Space in Greek Thought studies ancient Greek theories of physical space and place, in particular those of the classical and Hellenistic period. These theories are explained primarily with reference to the general philosophical or methodological framework within which they took shape. Special attention is paid to the nature and status of the sources. Two introductory chapters deal with the interrelations between various concepts of space and with Greek spatial terminology (including case studies of the Eleatics, Democritus and Epicurus). The remaining chapters contain detailed studies on the theories of space of Plato, Aristotle, the early Peripatetics and the Stoics. The book is especially useful for historians of ancient physics, but may also be of interest to students of Aristotelian dialectic, ancient metaphysics, doxography, and medieval and early modern physics.
Download or read book Architecture and the Novel under the Italian Fascist Regime written by Francesca Billiani and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-09-14 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Architecture and the Novel under the Italian Fascist Regime discusses the relationship between the novel and architecture during the Fascist period in Italy (1922-1943). By looking at two profoundly diverse aesthetic phenomena within the context of the creation of a Fascist State art, Billiani and Pennacchietti argue that an effort of construction, or reconstruction, was the main driving force behind both projects: the advocated “revolution” of the novel form (realism) and that of architecture (rationalism). The book is divided into seven chapters, which in turn analyze the interconnections between the novel and architecture in theory and in practice. The first six chapters cover debates on State art, on the novel and on architecture, as well as their historical development and their unfolding in key journals of the period. The last chapter offers a detailed analysis of some important novels and buildings, which have in practice realized some of the key principles articulated in the theoretical disputes.
Download or read book The Philosophy of Love written by Francesco Patrizi and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Patrizi's Philosophy of Love is both a remarkably detailed description of one of the most famous woman scholars of the sixteenth century, Tarquinia Molza, and also a strikingly modern elucidation of the origins of love. Nearly one-half of the book is devoted to a detailed description of Molza, her education, her talents as a musician, poet, and philosopher. In the second half of the book, Molza "teaches" Patrizi her philosophy of love: that "all love emanates from the love we have for ourselves." Readers interested in both the status of women in the Renaissance as well as those interested in the early roots of contemporary "self-psychology" will find this book illuminating.

Download or read book The Greek Epic Cycle and its Ancient Reception written by Marco Fantuzzi and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2015-08-06 with total page 855 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The poems of the Epic Cycle are assumed to be the reworking of myths and narratives which had their roots in an oral tradition predating that of many of the myths and narratives which took their present form in the Iliad and the Odyssey. The remains of these texts allow us to investigate diachronic aspects of epic diction as well as the extent of variation within it on the part of individual authors - two of the most important questions in modern research on archaic epic. They also help to illuminate the early history of Greek mythology. Access to the poems, however, has been thwarted by their current fragmentary state. This volume provides the scholarly community and graduate students with a thorough critical foundation for reading and interpreting them.
Download or read book Past Im Perfect Continuous written by Alice Balestrino and published by Sapienza Università Editrice. This book was released on 2021-06-25 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Past (Im)perfect Continuous. Trans-Cultural Articulations of the Postmemory of WWII presents an international and interdisciplinary approach to the comprehension of the postmemory of WWII, accounting for a number of different intellectual trajectories that investigate WWII and the Holocaust as paradigms for other traumas within a global and multidirectional context. Indeed, by exceeding the geographical boundaries of nations and states and overcoming contextual specificities, postmemory foregrounds continuous, active, connective, transcultural, and always imperfect representations of violence that engage with the alterity of other histories and other subjects. 75 years after the end of WWII, this volume is primarily concerned with the convergence between postmemory and underexamined aspects of the history and aftermath of WWII, as well as with several sociopolitical anxieties and representational preoccupations. Drawing from different disciplines, the critical and visual works gathered in this volume interrogate the referential power of postmemory, considering its transcultural interplay with various forms, media, frames of reference, conceptual registers, and narrative structures.
