Book excerpt: Doping brings together the proceedings of an International Seminar on Doping organized by the Research Committee of UNESCO's International Council of Sport and Physical Education and held in Belgium in May 1964. The papers explore the doping problem in sports and physical education using a multidisciplinary approach, with emphasis on the pharmacological, biochemical, psychological, ethical, social, and juridical aspects of doping. This volume is comprised of 13 chapters and begins with an overview of the general and pharmacological aspects of doping, along with the essential points in the objections against doping. The following chapters deal with the epidemiology of doping and antidoping strategies; the problem of doping in horse racing; methods for qualitative detection and quantitative estimation of dosage of doping agents; and psychological aspects of doping. The results of a comparative study of some doping agents are also presented. Subsequent chapters consider research findings on different doping substances used by sportsmen; the effects of drugs on muscular performance and athletic performance; and the use of doping substances in the preparation of athletes. The final chapters look at the ethical and juridical aspects of doping. This book will be a useful resource for pharmacologists as well as athletes and sports officials.

Book Sport and physical culture in Occupied France

Download or read book Sport and physical culture in Occupied France written by Keith Rathbone and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2022-02-08 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sport and physical culture in Occupied France examines the Vichy state’s attempts to promote physical education and sports in order to rejuvenate French men and women during the Occupation. Through this cultural lens, it illuminates the central paradox of state power during the Vichy Regime. The state organised a centralised physical cultural programme meant to control and discipline French men and women. However, these activities instead empowered individuals and sporting associations to create spaces for individual expression, protect entrenched business enterprises, preserve republican institutions and organise sites for mutual aid and assistance. Based on extensive archival research, this innovative, multi-city analysis demonstrates how French sporting federations, associations and athletes appropriated Vichy’s physical education directives to reshape the ideology of the state and serve their own local agendas.

Book Women Sport Society

Download or read book Women Sport Society written by Roberta Park and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-09-13 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the last four decades women’s and gender history have become vibrant fields including studies of attitudes regarding the limited physical and other abilities of females as well as studies of the accomplishments of notable female athletes. We have become increasingly aware that women have made contributions to physical education, dance and sport that go far beyond being teachers, athletes and coaches. They have created and implemented an astonishing variety of programs intended to serve the needs of large numbers of children and youth sometimes organizing student health services, as well as chairing departments of physical education. They have worked as directors of sport, physical education and dance, running playgrounds and recreational facilities and have created and/or served as important officers of a variety of sporting organizations. This book explores the contributions and achievements of women in a variety of historical and geographical contexts which, not surprisingly opens opportunities for additions, revisions and counter-narratives to accepted histories of physical education and sport science. It seeks to broaden our understandings about the backgrounds, motivations and achievements of dedicated women working to improve health and bodily practices in a variety of different arenas and for often different purposes. This book was previously published as a special issue of the International Journal of the History of Sport.

Book Sport and Violence Rethinking Elias

Download or read book Sport and Violence Rethinking Elias written by Dominique Bodin and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-07-26 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this book, in discussing Elias’s theory, is not to refute it. Tendentiously, the theory works with its weaknesses and strong points and it has been enriched by a number of authors over time. The objective of this volume is to discuss the blind spots and, more simply, what is too often taken for granted: namely the obvious pacifying effect of sports and/or produced by sports. This analysis has been guided by two perspectives: the sociological one which questions the "naturalization" of sport which is also the naturalization of the "wildlings" which have to be civilized, and the other which comes from philosophical anthropology and attempts to comprehend the long term characteristics of this union – or disunion – of sport and violence.

Book Injury and Health Risk Management in Sports

Download or read book Injury and Health Risk Management in Sports written by Werner Krutsch and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-04-21 with total page 747 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a comprehensive source of information and guidance on health risk management and medical care across the entire range of sports, in athletes of all ages and ability. General health aspects, injury prevention, first aid and emergency management, diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation, and return to play are all addressed, with presentation of practical recommendations throughout. All medical disciplines with relevance for athletes - from psychological aspects to dermatological issues - are as well as main pathologies, overuse injuries and indications for surgical treatment of all certain parts of the musculoskeletal system, covered. Key features include a clear structure, short chapters in protocol format, and the inclusion of helpful checklists and tips and tricks for a quick and in-depth overview. Detailed attention is paid both to the medical care, specific to injuries of different parts of the body, and to special considerations relating to individual sports. Among the sport disciplines team sports, athletics, winter sports, track and field, martial arts, motor sports and cycling, extreme sports, swimming and water sports, racket sports, other IOC sports, and Paralympic sports are covered. Due to raising population of certain modern non-IOC sports, e.g. E-Sports, beach sports, flying sports and canyoning, and paltry medical information in this disciplines we put a focus on them. The book is a collaborative work from the newly created ESSKA section European Sports Medicine Associates (ESMA), which brings together the various disciplines of sports medicine. It will be an ideal resource and decision-making tool for doctors, athletes, coaches, and physiotherapists.
