Book Creole Son

Download or read book Creole Son written by E. Kay Trimberger and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 2020-04-01 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Creole Son is the compelling memoir of a single white mother searching to understand why her adopted biracial son grew from a happy child into a troubled young adult who struggled with addiction for decades. The answers, E. Kay Trimberger finds, lie in both nature and nurture. When five-day-old Marco is flown from Louisiana to California and placed in Trimberger’s arms, she assumes her values and example will be the determining influences upon her new son’s life. Twenty-six years later, when she helps him make contact with his Cajun and Creole biological relatives, she discovers that many of his cognitive and psychological strengths and difficulties mirror theirs. Using her training as a sociologist, Trimberger explores behavioral genetics research on adoptive families. To her relief as well as distress, she learns that both biological heritage and the environment—and their interaction—shape adult outcomes. Trimberger shares deeply personal reflections about raising Marco in Berkeley in the 1980s and 1990s, with its easy access to drugs and a culture that condoned their use. She examines her own ignorance about substance abuse, and also a failed experiment in an alternative family lifestyle. In an afterword, Marc Trimberger contributes his perspective, noting a better understanding of his life journey gained through his mother’s research. By telling her story, Trimberger provides knowledge and support to all parents—biological and adoptive—with troubled offspring. She ends by suggesting a new adoption model, one that creates an extended, integrated family of both biological and adoptive kin.

Book Method and Order in Renaissance Philosophy of Nature

Download or read book Method and Order in Renaissance Philosophy of Nature written by Daniel A. Di Liscia and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-12-05 with total page 565 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The volume results from a seminar sponsored by the ’Foundation for Intellectual History’ at the Herzog August Bibliothek, Wolfenbüttel, in 1992. Starting with the theory of regressus as displayed in its most developed form by William Wallace, these papers enter the vast field of the Renaissance discussion on method as such in its historical and systematical context. This is confined neither to the notion of method in the strict sense, nor to the Renaissance in its exact historical limits, nor yet to the Aristotelian tradition as a well defined philosophical school, but requires a new scholarly approach. Thus - besides Galileo, Zabarella and their circles, which are regarded as being crucial for the ’emergence of modern science’ in the end of the 16th century - the contributors deal with the ancient and medieval origins as well as with the early modern continuity of the Renaissance concepts of method and with ’non-regressive’ methodologies in the various approaches of Renaissance natural philosophy, including the Lutheran and Calvinist traditions.

Book HOLINESS BEING PLAIN PAPERS ON ITS NATURE HINDRANCES DIFFICULTIES AND ROOTS

Download or read book HOLINESS BEING PLAIN PAPERS ON ITS NATURE HINDRANCES DIFFICULTIES AND ROOTS written by J.C RYLE and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2015-12-02 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The twenty papers contained in this volume are a humble contribution to a cause which is exciting much interest in the present day-I mean the cause of scriptural holiness. It is a cause which everyone who loves Christ, and desires to advance His kingdom in the world, should endeavor to help forward. Everyone can do something and I wish to add my mite. The reader will find little that is directly controversial in these papers. I have carefully abstained from naming modern teachers and modern books. I have been content to give the result of my own study of the Bible, my own private meditations, my own prayers for light, and my own reading of old divines. If in anything I am still in error, I hope I shall be shown it before I leave the world. We all see in part, and have a treasure in earthen vessels. I trust I am willing to learn.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The papers in this volume were presented at a conference held at the Roehampton Institute, London, in February 1995, and are concerned with either theological or literary issues related to the nature of religious language.
