Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through the 'dark night of the soul' to the depiction of the erotically-charged union of the soul and God, the poetry and prose works of the Spanish friar John of the Cross (1542-1591) offer a striking account of the transformation of the individual in the course of the Christian life. John of the Cross: Desire, Transformation, and Selfhood argues that these writings are animated by John's own creative and subtly conceptualized notion of erotic desire. John's understanding of desire has the potential to enrich recent theological discussion of the subject, but it has been curiously neglected in past scholarship. To correct this lacuna, this study undertakes a detailed historical analysis in three parts. Firstly, it attends to the patristic, medieval, and sixteenth-century Spanish influences on John's writings, showing how John reworks a long tradition of biblical, Christian, and Platonic reflection on the concept. Secondly, it traces the importance of desire through John's writings, demonstrating how he develops the theme through his poetry, his anthropology of the soul, and his account of the spiritual ascent. Thirdly, it explores the reception of his writings in the twentieth century, demonstrating how particular modern philosophical and theological commitments have prevented scholars from recognising the rich and distinctive shape of John's theological vision. John's account of the transformation of the self, with its hopeful vision of the graced transformation of the soul's desires, has significance beyond the constrained modern categories of systematic theology, Christian spirituality, pastoral theology, and mysticism—it is a vision that is worthy of recovery today.

Book Theology of Suffering and Cross in the Life and Works of Blessed Edith Stein

Download or read book Theology of Suffering and Cross in the Life and Works of Blessed Edith Stein written by Antony Kavunguvalappil and published by Peter Lang Gmbh, Internationaler Verlag Der Wissenschaften. This book was released on 1998 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Edith Stein is a very significant woman of our century. She was German Jewess who at first plunged herself into vile abyss of Atheism. Converted to Roman Catholicism she ascended to the highest peak of Mount Carmel and thus achieved the mystical union of her soul with God. For the Church she is a martyr and revered saint. In the philosophical circle she is a significant exponent of Phenomenology. A heroic woman, Edith Stein is a feminist of true womanhood. The philosophical insights of Edmund Husserl and the Mystical Theology of St. John of the Cross helped her in the development of the Science of the Cross. The relevance of Edith Stein is seen not merely in the scientific exposition of the Theology of the Cross but specially in the living witness of that doctrine in her own life.

Book Corpus

    Book Details:
  • Author : Jean-Luc Nancy
  • Publisher : Fordham Univ Press
  • Release : 2009-08-25
  • ISBN : 0823229637
  • Pages : 208 pages

Download or read book Corpus written by Jean-Luc Nancy and published by Fordham Univ Press. This book was released on 2009-08-25 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How have we thought “the body”? How can we think it anew? The body of mortal creatures, the body politic, the body of letters and of laws, the “mystical body of Christ”—all these (and others) are incorporated in the word Corpus, the title and topic of Jean-Luc Nancy’s masterwork. Corpus is a work of literary force at once phenomenological, sociological, theological, and philosophical in its multiple orientations and approaches. In thirty-six brief sections, Nancy offers us at once an encyclopedia and a polemical program—reviewing classical takes on the “corpus” from Plato, Aristotle, and Saint Paul to Descartes, Hegel, Husserl, and Freud, while demonstrating that the mutations (technological, biological, and political) of our own culture have given rise to the need for a new understanding of the body. He not only tells the story of this cultural change but also explores the promise and responsibilities that such a new understanding entails. The long-awaited English translation is a bold, bravura rendering. To the title essay are added five closely related recent pieces—including a commentary by Antonia Birnbaum—dedicated in large part to the legacy of the “mind-body problem” formulated by Descartes and the challenge it poses to rethinking the ancient problems of the corpus. The last and most poignant of these essays is “The Intruder,” Nancy’s philosophical meditation on his heart transplant. The book also serves as the opening move in Nancy’s larger project called “The deconstruction of Christianity.”
