Download or read book Power from the North written by Caroline Desbiens and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2013-05-03 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1970s, Hydro-Québec declared in a publicity campaign “We Are Hydro-Québécois.” The slogan symbolized the extent to which hydroelectric development in the North had come to both reflect and fuel French Canada’s aspirations. The slogan helped Quebecers relate to the province’s northern territory and to accept the exploitation of its resources. In Power from the North, Caroline Desbiens explores how this culture of hydroelectricity helped shape the landscape during the first phase of the James Bay hydroelectric project. Policy makers and citizens did not, she argues, view those who built the dams as mere workers – they saw them as pioneers in a previously uninhabited land now inscribed with the codes of culture and spectacle. This insightful work shows that if Quebec hopes to engage in truly sustainable resource development, all actors must bring an awareness of their cultural histories and visions of nature, North, and nation to the negotiating table.

Book The EU s Major Electricity and Gas Utilities Since Market Liberalization

Download or read book The EU s Major Electricity and Gas Utilities Since Market Liberalization written by Christian Schülke and published by Gouvernance Europeenne Et Geop. This book was released on 2010 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A major change has taken place in the company structure of the European electricity and gas markets. Since the liberalization of EU energy markets began in the 1990s, companies like E.ON, GDF Suez, EDF, Enel, and RWE have become European giants with activities in a large number of member states. The advocates of market liberalization did not expect, or intend, the emergence of a small number of large utilities that control an increasing part of the EU market. Some observers claim that liberalization has led to an oligopoly with detrimental consequences for competition. Based on extensive background research, this book presents a fact-based analysis of the changes in the European utility sector since the 1990s. Case studies of the seven largest utilities illustrate how companies adapted their strategies to the changing market environment. The author underlines diverging choices and common trends with the aim of using synergies between electricity and gas.

Book excerpt: The continent of Africa is rich in minerals needed by Western economies, but rather than forming the basis for economic growth the mining industry contributes very little to African development Investigating the impact of the 2003 Extractive Industries Review on a number of African countries, the contributors find the root of the problem in the controls imposed on the African countries by the IMF and World Bank. The book takes a multidisciplinary approach and provides a historical perspective of each country, making it ideal for students of development studies and development organizations.

Book Nested Federalism and Inuit Governance in the Canadian Arctic

Download or read book Nested Federalism and Inuit Governance in the Canadian Arctic written by Gary N. Wilson and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2020-02-15 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Canadian federal system was never designed to recognize Indigenous governance, and it has resisted change. But Indigenous communities have successfully negotiated the creation of self-governing regions. Most of these are situated within existing units of the Canadian federation, creating forms of nested federalism. This governance model is transforming Canada as it reformulates the relationship between Indigenous peoples and the state. Nested Federalism and Inuit Governance in the Canadian Arctic traces the journey toward self-governance in three northern regions: Nunavik, the Inuvialuit Settlement Region, and Nunatsiavut. This meticulous analysis provides new insight into the evolution and consequences of Indigenous self-government.
