Book excerpt: Navi Pillay is a modern icon in the world’s efforts to protect humanity through international law and policy. She played a leading role in the multi-national operation to clean up the humanitarian dross left on the essence of modern civilization by the Rwandan Genocide of 1994. Her contributions in that effort were in virtue of her role as a judge—and, eventually, as the President—of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda. From there, she went on to serve as one of the first appeal judges at the newly established International Criminal Court—another international endeavour aimed at protecting humanity through law. In time, she was fittingly appointed the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, just ahead of a call to honour her with a book of essays in international law and policy, for the contributions that she had already made in the international enterprise of protecting humanity. Inspired by Pillay, some of the modern legends and experts in international law and policy have, in this volume, shared their experiences and thoughts on how better to protect humanity in our time. In the book, we read the wise words of Nobel laureates and other envoys of peace, renowned international judges and famous scholars, as well as those of energetic younger minds with great promise. Some chapters are in French.

Book Language Bases Discourse Bases

Download or read book Language Bases Discourse Bases written by Gilberte Piéraut-Le Bonniec and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1991-03-22 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When child language began to be studied in the sixties, what interested researchers most was what could be considered language per se. Holophrases were excluded as seemingly having no syntax and research work was carried out as of the two-word stage. Language development was studied up to around age seven, the age at which natural acquisition processes were considered to be contaminated by formal schooling in language. In opposition to such an attitude, this volume has ignored this heavily studied area of language development preferring to present research being carried out at the two ends of the development process that had been rejected: that of prelinguistic speech skills, at the one end, and the development of discourse at the other. This book thus begins with the physical properties in human development necessary for language to occur. It also offers studies on a child's initial equipment, i.e. intra-uterine skills and skills acquired before first words. At the other end are studies on the development of discourse, i.e. the child's acquisition of the ability not only to juxtapose ideas, but to link them into cohesive, coherent texts and to use argumentation, skills that are not fully acquired until the child is well into adolescence and nearing adulthood.

Book Second Chance

Download or read book Second Chance written by Joe Hawk and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2022-12-02 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Upon retiring from the New York City Transit Police Department after 22 years, I was given a second chance to start over, in a new police department and to be able to continue doing what I loved, being a police officer. What I didn't know at the time, the town of Palm Beach P.D. wasn't all that I thought it would be instead, the department revolved on favoritism; and if you questioned their decisions, they retaliated against you. This was obvious from the time I took my first promotion test for the rank of sergeant. I was passed over for the next three promotions, even though I was higher up on the list. They employed the” Peter Principle”, promote the man to his next level of incompetence. I had the moral courage to speak up, and the rank and file stood idly by. Then the retaliation started, lower yearly evaluations, refusal to sign off on off duty police courses, to further my law enforcement career, avoid rewarding me Officer of the Month for outstanding arrests; it went to officers with mediocre arrests, eleven {11} years to fully reach top out pay whereby other officers reached the top after four to five years, assigned to least desirable patrol zones for long periods of time. After working for the two past chiefs, the department turned around. I never gave up, and I maintained my moral courage to stand up for what was right. Finally, after eleven {11} years, I was recognized for who I was and what I stood for. The next nine years were most rewarding. 10% of all sales of this book will go to the fallen law enforcement officers memorial funds, Washington, DC, so that they won’t be forgotten.

Book The Imaginary Word and Image

Download or read book The Imaginary Word and Image written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2015-05-19 with total page 363 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The imaginary as a critical concept originated in the twentieth century and has been theorized in diverse ways. It can be understood as a register of thought; the way we interpret the world; the universe of images, signs, texts, and objects of thought. In this volume, it is explored as it manifests itself in encounters between the verbal and the visual. A number of the essays brought together here explore the transposition of the imaginary in illustrations of texts and verbal renditions of images, as well as in comic books based on paintings or on verbal narratives. Others analyze ways in which books deal with film or television and investigate the imaginary in digital media. Special attention is paid to the imaginary of places and the relationship of the imaginary with memory. Written in English and French, these contributions by European and American scholars demonstrate the various concerns and approaches characteristic of contemporary scholarship in word and image studies.
