Book Materializing Colonial Encounters

Download or read book Materializing Colonial Encounters written by François G. Richard and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-09-19 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume investigates the material production and expression of colonial experiences in Africa. It combines archaeological, historical, and ethnographic sources to explore the diverse pathways, practices, and projects constructed by Africans in their engagement with the forces of colonial modernity and capitalism. This volume is situated in ongoing debates in archaeological and anthropological approaches to materiality. In this respect, it seeks to target archaeologists interested in the conceptual issues provoked by colonial enfoldments. It is also concerned with increasing the visibility of relevant African archaeological literature to scholars of colonialism and imperialism laboring in other fields. This book brings together an array of junior and senior scholars, whose contributions represent a rich sample of the vibrant archaeological research conducted in Africa today, blending conceptual inspiration with robust fieldwork. The chapters target a variety of cultural, historical, and colonial settings. They are driven by a plurality of perspectives, but they are bound by a shared commitment to postcolonial, critical, and material culture theories. While this book focuses on western and southern Africa – the sub-regions that boast the deepest traditions of historical archaeological research in the continent – attention was also placed on including case-studies from traditionally less well-represented areas (East African and Swahili coasts, Madagascar), whose material pasts are nevertheless essential to a wider comprehension of variability and comparability of ‘modern’ colonial conditions. Consequently, this volume lends a unique wide-ranging look at African experiences across the tangle of imperial geographies on the continent, with case-studies focusing on Anglophone, Francophone, and Dutch-speaking contexts. This volume is an exciting opportunity to present this work to wider audiences and foster conversations with a wide community of scholars about the material fashioning of colonial life, relations, and configurations of power.

Book Extraits cl s de jurisprudence cour europ enne des Droits de l Homme

Download or read book Extraits cl s de jurisprudence cour europ enne des Droits de l Homme written by Gilles Dutertre and published by Council of Europe. This book was released on 2003-01-01 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Download or read book Christ in You written by William B. Barcley and published by University Press of America. This book was released on 1999 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume provides a detailed examination of Paul's use of the phrase 'Christ in You' and highlights its importance for better understanding Paul's eschatological thought. Having previously received relatively little scholarly attention, the expression 'Christ in You' has often been viewed as synonymous with the phrase 'in Christ.' Barcley recognizes a distinction and argues that Paul uses 'Christ in You' specifically to emphasize the proper functioning of faith in life. 'Christ in You' indicates that believers have undergone a spiritual transformation, fully incorporating Christ into their lives. This study will be of value to religious scholars, pastors, and anyone with an interest in New Testament thought.

Book A Writer s Topography

Download or read book A Writer s Topography written by Jason Herbeck and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2015-08-25 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Writer’s Topography examines French-Algerian Nobel Prize laureate Albert Camus’s intimate yet often unsettled relationship with natural and human landscapes. Much like the Greek hero Sisyphus about whom he wrote his famous philosophical essay, Camus sustained a deep awareness of and appreciation for what he termed le visage de ce monde—the face of this earth. This wide-ranging collection of essays by Camus scholars from around the world demonstrates to what extent topography is omnipresent in Camus’s life and works. Configurations and contemplations of landscape figure prominently in his fictional works on both a literal and figurative level—from the earliest writings of his youth to his final, unfinished novel, Le Premier Homme. Furthermore, as a core component of the way in which Camus perceived, conceived and expressed the human condition, topography constitutes an over-arching and particularly profound dimension of his personal, public and philosophical thought.
