In the fall of 1901 I became interested in the Old French Roman d'Aventure known as the Roman de la Violette, by Gerbert de Montreuil, and, at the suggestion of Associate Professor E. C. Armstrong of the Romance Department in Johns Hopkins University, I determined to make a study of this poem. The Roman de la Violette had already appeared in a limited edition of two hundred copies, edited by Francisque Michel in 1834.1 At that time, however, the editor was able to control only two of the four extant Mss. and the imperfectly developed science of Romance text-editing rendered impossible a critical edition in the modern sense of the term. Thinking, therefore, that the Violette, important from both a linguistic and a literary point of view, merited a more detailed treatment than that given by Michel, I decided to make a careful study of the poem, based on photographic reproductions of all the Mss., with a view to publishing ultimately a critical edition. Of the four Mss. of the Violette two are in the Bibliotheque Nationale of Paris, one is in the Imperial Library of Saint Petersburg, and one is in the private library of Mr. J. E. Kerr of New York. Through the generous courtesy of Mr. Kerr, to whom I am especially indebted for his kindness in placing the MS. at my disposal, I was able to photograph his entire MS. in the spring of 1902. I had already, before this, obtained permission from the authorities of the Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris and of the Imperial Library in Saint Petersburg to photograph the Mss. of the Violette preserved in those libraries. I therefore went to Saint Petersburg in May, 1902, and, through the courtesy of the Librarian of the Imperial Library, I was permitted at once to photograph the Ms. of...

Book The Romance of the Violet and Other Wager Tales from Medieval France

Download or read book The Romance of the Violet and Other Wager Tales from Medieval France written by and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2024-08-14 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A high-stakes wager placed on a woman's virtue; men who spy on bathing women; tell-tale birthmarks; cross-dressing; dragons; tournaments; and aristocrats bursting into song--these features and more appear in the three stories translated here, all versions of the folktale known as "the wager tale." Such stories were especially popular in thirteenth-century France, when noblemen fulfilled their feudal duties far from home. Did their women remain faithful? A pressing question, for only female chastity guaranteed the legitimacy of heirs. This collection offers the first translations into English of The Romance of the Violet and The Count of Poitiers, along with a new version of The Tale of King Flore and the Fair Joan. The first paints a vivid portrait of thirteenth-century courtly life. The second, set in the eighth-century court of King Pepin, includes both a wager tale and a bride quest, the latter involving a shocking scene of female group nudity. Flore and Joan takes a different tack, presenting a clear-eyed heroine who overcomes daunting odds by posing as a man. These medieval tales portray strong women who gainsay social control of their bodies, thereby winning the respect of men--a scenario that resonates even today.

Book The Carole A Study of a Medieval Dance

Download or read book The Carole A Study of a Medieval Dance written by Robert Mullally and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The carole was the principal social dance in France and England from c. 1100 to c. 1400 and was frequently mentioned in French and English medieval literature. However, it has been widely misunderstood by contributors in recent citations in dictionaries and reference books, both linguistic and musical. The carole was performed by all classes of society - kings and nobles, shepherds and servant girls. It is described as taking place both indoors and outdoors. Its central position in the life of the people is underlined by references not only in what we might call fictional texts, but also in historical (or quasi-historical) writings, in moral treatises and even in a work on astronomy. Dr Robert Mullally's focus is very much on details relevant to the history, choreography and performance of the dance as revealed in the primary sources. This methodology involves attempting to isolate the term carole from other dance terms not only in French, but also in other languages. Mullally's groundbreaking study establishes all the characteristics of this dance: etymological, choreographical, lyrical, musical and iconographical.

Book Le Roman de la Manekine

Download or read book Le Roman de la Manekine written by Philippe de Remi and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-12-04 with total page 733 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Le Roman de la Manekine marks the beginning of its author's literary career. Philippe de Remi, on whom much attention has focused in the last two decades, was an unusual figure: a 13th-century land-holder and professional administrator who loved literature and who produced a large and varied corpus of narrative and lyric. Here is presented for the first time since 1884 a scholarly edition of Philippe's first romance, a tale centering on a heroine of great courage and integrity who passes through many trials without losing hope. The text is accompanied by a line-by-line English version, and by extensive commentary touching on the author, his milieu, and the literary context and major themes of the romance. Studies of the manuscript (Paris BNF fr 1588), its illustrations (all of them reproduced), and its history, have been provided by Alison Stones and Roger Middleton. The volume should be of interest to specialists in medieval French literature, to general readers who find English translations useful, and to scholars in the fields of medieval art and manuscript history.

Book The Pleasant Nights

Download or read book The Pleasant Nights written by Giovanni Francesco Straparola and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2012-01-01 with total page 673 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Renowned today for his contribution to the rise of the modern European fairy tale, Giovan Francesco Straparola (c. 1480–c. 1557) is particularly known for his dazzling anthology The Pleasant Nights. Originally published in Venice in 1550 and 1553, this collection features seventy-three folk stories, fables, jests, and pseudo-histories, including nine tales we might now designate for 'mature readers' and seventeen proto-fairy tales. Nearly all of these stories, including classics such as 'Puss in Boots,' made their first ever appearance in this collection; together, the tales comprise one of the most varied and engaging Renaissance miscellanies ever produced. Its appeal sustained it through twenty-six editions in the first sixty years. This full critical edition of The Pleasant Nights presents these stories in English for the first time in over a century. The text takes its inspiration from the celebrated Waters translation, which is entirely revised here to render it both more faithful to the original and more sparkishly idiomatic than ever before. The stories are accompanied by a rich sampling of illustrations, including originals from nineteenth-century English and French versions of the text. As a comprehensive critical and historical edition, these volumes contain far more information on the stories than can be found in any existing studies, literary histories, or Italian editions of the work. Donald Beecher provides a lengthy introduction discussing Straparola as an author, the nature of fairy tales and their passage through oral culture, and how this phenomenon provides a new reservoir of stories for literary adaptation. Moreover, the stories all feature extensive commentaries analysing not only their themes but also their fascinating provenances, drawing on thousands of analogue tales going back to ancient Sanskrit, Persian, and Arabic stories. Immensely entertaining and readable, The Pleasant Nights will appeal to anyone interested in fairy tales, ancient stories, and folk creations. Such readers will also enjoy Beecher's academically solid and erudite commentaries, which unfold in a manner as light and amusing as the stories themselves.

Book Singlewomen in the European Past 1250 1800

Download or read book Singlewomen in the European Past 1250 1800 written by Judith M. Bennett and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2013-02-01 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When we think about the European past, we tend to imagine villages, towns, and cities populated by conventional families—married couples and their children. Although most people did marry and pass many of their adult years in the company of a spouse, this vision of a preindustrial Europe shaped by heterosexual marriage deceptively hides the well-established fact that, in some times and places, as many as twenty-five percent of women and men remained single throughout their lives. Despite the significant number of never-married lay women in medieval and early modern Europe, the study of their role and position in that society has been largely neglected. Singlewomen in the European Past opens up this group for further investigation. It is not only the first book to highlight the important minority of women who never married but also the first to address the critical matter of differences among women from the perspective of marital status. Essays by leading scholars—among them Maryanne Kowaleski, Margaret Hunt, Ruth Mazo Karras, Susan Mosher Stuard, Roberta Krueger, and Merry Wiesner—deal with topics including the sexual and emotional relationships of singlewomen, the economic issues and employment opportunities facing them, the differences between the lives of widows and singlewomen, the conflation of singlewomen and prostitutes, and the problem of female slavery. The chapters both illustrate the roles open to the singlewoman in the thirteenth through eighteenth centuries and raise new perspectives about the experiences of singlewomen in earlier times.
