Book excerpt: Cette étude aborde la question des conditions d’expression d’une théorie de l’esprit chez le jeune enfant. Elle s’inscrit dans une perspective développementale et socio-constructiviste. Premièrement, nous nous sommes penchés sur la nécessité d’adapter linguistiquement la tâche classique de fausse croyance à une population d’enfants de 2 ;6 ans à 4 ;6 ans. Le contexte verbal de la tâche du transfert inattendu est mis à l’épreuve grâce à deux modifications linguistiques de la consigne. Les résultats soulignent le rôle d’une adaptation linguistique pour les jeunes enfants. Il ressort de cette première observation que les enfants de moins de 4 ;6 ans ont des compétences pour comprendre les fausses croyances qu’ils ne peuvent exprimer aisément sur cette épreuve. Deuxièmement, grâce à l’élaboration d’une grille d’analyse des dialogues, nous avons repéré les caractéristiques langagières pragmatiques et fonctionnelles de la mise en œuvre d’une théorie de l’esprit chez les parents et les enfants de 3, 4 et 5 ans selon des contextes narratifs distingués par leur « contenu mental ». Nous avons mis en lumière une méta-représentation pragmatique des états mentaux. Ceci constituerait l’avant dernière étape du processus d’acquisition d’une théorie de l’esprit. Les résultats de ces deux études complémentaires nous permettent de questionner la résolution d’une fausse croyance à travers l’utilisation représentationnelle des états épistémiques, l’utilisation des états épistémiques en tant qu’unique indice de l’acquisition d’une théorie de l’esprit et enfin la pertinence du contexte épistémique comme contexte narratif encourageant l’utilisation de ces mêmes états.
