Book The Review of International Arbitral Awards

Download or read book The Review of International Arbitral Awards written by Emmanuel Gaillard and published by Juris Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2010-12-01 with total page 506 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In intemational arbitration, as in any other system of adjudication, finality of the decision must be balanced against the need to ensure that justice has been administered fairly. Because finality is one of its essential features, international arbitration has reached an equilibrium which guarantees to the parties a decision that cannot be appealed, while allowing a review of arbitral awards on limited grounds. The review of international arbitral awards was the topic of the inaugural IAI forum, on the occasion of which 50 prominent academics, judges, arbitrators and practitioners active in the field of international arbitration convened in the legendary Clos de Vougeot, in the heart of Burgundy for a two-day retreat. The presentations were followed by extensive discussion, the transcript of which is included in the present volume. The International Arbitration Institute (IAI) was established in Paris with the purpose of promoting communication and exchanges on current international arbitration issues. It now includes over 600 members residing in 44 countries. For further detail, see www.iaiparis.com.

Book The Early Reception of Berkeley s Immaterialism 1710 1733

Download or read book The Early Reception of Berkeley s Immaterialism 1710 1733 written by Harry M. Bracken and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 131 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By the time of Immanuel Kant, Berkeley had been caIled, among other things, a sceptic, an atheist, a solipsist, and an idealist. In our own day, however, the suggestion has been ad vanced that Berkeley is bett er understood if interpreted as a realist and man of common sense. Regardless of whether in the end one decides to treat hirn as a subjective idealist or as a re alist, I think it has become appropriate to inquire how Berkeley's own contemporaries viewed his philosophy. Heretofore the gen erally accepted account has been that they ignored hirn, roughly from the time he published the Principles 01 Human Knowledge until1733 when Andrew Baxter's criticism appeared. The aim of the present study is to correct that account as weIl as to give some indication not only of the extent, but more important, the role and character of several of the earliest discussions. Second arily, I have tried to give some clues as to the influence this early material may have had in forming the image of the "good" Bish op that emerged in the second half of the eighteenth century. For it is my hope that such clues may prove helpful in freeing us from the more severe strictures of the traditional interpretive dogmas.

This book was released on 2007 with total page 1275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This "Liber Amicorum" is published at the occasion of Judge Lucius Caflisch's retirement from a distinguished teaching career at the Graduate Institute of International Studies of Geneva, where he served as Professor of International Law for more than three decades, and where he has also held the position of Director. It was written by his colleagues and friends, from the European Court of Human Rights, from universities all around the world, from the Swiss Foreign Affairs Ministry and many other national and international institutions. The "Liber Amicorum Lucius Caflisch" covers different fields in which Judge Caflisch has excelled in his various capacities, as scholar, representative of Switzerland in international conferences, legal adviser of the Swiss Foreign Affairs Ministry, counsel, registrar, arbitrator and judge. This collective work is divided into three main sections. The first section examines questions concerning human rights and international humanitarian law. The second section is devoted to the international law of spaces, including matters regarding the law of the sea, international waterways, Antarctica, and boundary and territorial issues. The third section addresses issues related to the peaceful settlement of disputes, both generally and with regard to any particular means of settlement. The contributions are in both English and French.

Book Rhetorical Strategies in Late Antique Literature

Download or read book Rhetorical Strategies in Late Antique Literature written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2017-08-28 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rhetorical Strategies in Late Antique Literature: Images, Metatexts and Interpretation is a collection of essays that survey the rhetorical tropes and the metaliterary dimension of works by important authors in a period marked by intense and thriving contact between Classical paideia and Christian culture. The contributions of this volume dissect the reuse of Classical literature and the deployment of rhetorical techniques in the creation of texts and images meant for use in cultural and religious debates by building on recent interpretations of the late antique cultural landscape as a milieu in which our understanding of religious dichotomies requires a more nuanced reassessment. The authors treated in this volume include Eusebius of Caesarea, Methodius of Olympus, Gregory of Nazianzus, Nonnus and the emperor Julian.

Book New Adventures in Language and Interaction

Download or read book New Adventures in Language and Interaction written by Jürgen Streeck and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2010-08-18 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book sixteen international scholars of language and social interaction describe their distinct frameworks of analysis. Taking conversation analysis and interactional sociolinguistics as their points of departure and investigating ordinary conversation as well as institutions such as health care, therapy, and city council meetings, they often incorporate gesture, prosody, and the listener's behavior in the analysis of talk. While some approaches are grounded in a critique of the major schools of interaction analysis, others integrate the interactionist perspective with ideas from fields such as systemic-functional linguistics, distributed cognition, and the sociology of knowledge. Each chapter combines a statement of the terms and methods of analysis with an exemplary analysis of a moment of interaction. New Adventures in Language and Interaction gives an excellent overview of the novelty and diversity of interaction-focused perspectives on language and of the heterogeneity of approaches that have evolved from the pioneering work of Sacks and Schegloff, Gumperz, and their co-workers.

Book The Mathematical Heritage of Henri Poincare

Download or read book The Mathematical Heritage of Henri Poincare written by Felix E. Browder and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1983-12-31 with total page 478 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On April 7-10, 1980, the American Mathematical Society sponsored a Symposium on the Mathematical Heritage of Henri Poincari, held at Indiana University, Bloomington, Indiana. This volume presents the written versions of all but three of the invited talks presented at this Symposium (those by W. Browder, A. Jaffe, and J. Mather were not written up for publication). In addition, it contains two papers by invited speakers who were not able to attend, S. S. Chern and L. Nirenberg. If one traces the influence of Poincari through the major mathematical figures of the early and midtwentieth century, it is through American mathematicians as well as French that this influence flows, through G. D. Birkhoff, Solomon Lefschetz, and Marston Morse. This continuing tradition represents one of the major strands of American as well as world mathematics, and it is as a testimony to this tradition as an opening to the future creativity of mathematics that this volume is dedicated. This part contains sections on topological methods in nonlinear problems, mechanics and dynamical systems, ergodic theory and recurrence, and historical material.
