C'est cet aspect que Raffaella Toncelli se propose d'éclairer dans ce travail à la fois historique, scientifique et épistémologique. Elle étudie d'abord la relativité restreinte, qu'elle analyse de façon systématique en montrant comment elle est née simultanément chez deux physiciens aux démarches radicalement différentes. Elle revient sur les cinq ou six principes de physique fondamentaux aux yeux de Poincaré, en insistant sur le rôle du principe de conservation de la masse. Elle présente enfin la théorie de la relativité générale en décomposant de façon claire et détaillée le processus de "création" d'une théorie, tel qu'il apparaît dans les nombreux écrits et manuscrits laissés par Einstein.
