Book Sustainable Agriculture and Soil Conservation

Download or read book Sustainable Agriculture and Soil Conservation written by Mirko Castellini and published by Mdpi AG. This book was released on 2021-12-27 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Soil degradation is one of the most topical environmental threats. A number of processes causing soil degradation, specifically erosion, compaction, salinization, pollution, and loss of both organic matter and soil biodiversity, are also strictly connected to agricultural activity and its intensification. The development and adoption of sustainable agronomic practices able to preserve and enhance the physical, chemical, and biological properties of soils and improve agroecosystem functions is a challenge for both scientists and farmers. The Special Issue entitled "Sustainable Agriculture and Soil Conservation" collects 12 original contributions addressing the state of the art of sustainable agriculture and soil conservation. The papers cover a wide range of topics, including organic agriculture, soil amendment and soil organic carbon (SOC) management, the impact of SOC on soil water repellency, the effects of soil tillage on the quantity of SOC associated with several fractions of soil particles and depth, and SOC prediction, using visible and near-infrared spectra and multivariate modeling. Moreover, the effects of some soil contaminants (e.g., crude oil, tungsten, copper, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons) are discussed or reviewed in light of the recent literature. The collection of the manuscripts presented in this Special Issue provides a relevant knowledge contribution for improving our understanding on sustainable agriculture and soil conservation, thus stimulating new views on this main topic.

Book The Spatial Dimension of Risk

Download or read book The Spatial Dimension of Risk written by Hans-Detlef M?ller-Mahn and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through its exploration of the spatial dimension of risk, this book offers a brand new approach to theorizing risk, and significant improvements in how to manage, tolerate and take risks. A broad range of risks are examined, including natural hazards, climate change, political violence, and state failure. Case studies range from the Congo to Central Asia, from tsunami in Japan and civil war affected areas in Sri Lanka to avalanche hazards in Austria. In each of these cases, the authors examine the importance and role of space in the causes and differentiation of risk, in how we can conceptualize risk from a spatial perspective and in the relevance of space and locality for risk governance. This new approach - endorsed by Ragnar Löfstedt and Ortwin Renn, two of the world's leading and most prolific risk analysts - is essential reading for those charged with studying, anticipating and managing risks.

Book Urban Transport XXI

Download or read book Urban Transport XXI written by C.A. Brebbia and published by WIT Press. This book was released on 2015-06-02 with total page 733 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Urban Transport XXI contains the proceedings of the 21st International Conference on Urban Transport and the Environment. The series of annual conferences organised by the Wessex Institute was first held in 1995. Transportation in urban areas, with its related environmental and social impacts, is a topic of significant concern for policymakers in both municipal and central government and for the urban citizens who need effective and efficient transport systems. Urban transport systems require considerable studies to devise and then safeguard their operational use, maintenance and safety. Transportation systems produce significant environmental impacts and can enhance or degrade the quality of life in urban centres. Clearly the challenge of providing effective and efficient transport systems in urban settings remains an acute concern, with financial, political and environmental constraints limiting the ability of transport system planners and operators to deliver the high quality outcomes expected by the public. Papers cover such topics as: Urban Transport Planning and Management; Urban Transport Strategies; Public Transport Systems; Environmental Aspects; Economic and Social Impact; Safety and Security; Travel Behaviour Studies; Customer Satisfaction; Transportation Modelling and Simulation; Infrastructure Development; Intelligent and Advanced Transport Systems; Transportation Integration; City Logistics; Resilience and Inter-modal Transport Systems; Mass Transport Strategies; Social Impacts; Freight Transport; Railway Systems; Transport Governance and Administration; Port and City; Mobility and Public Space; Life Cycle Management.
