Book excerpt: In Sentient Flesh R. A. Judy takes up freedman Tom Windham’s 1937 remark “we should have our liberty 'cause . . . us is human flesh" as a point of departure for an extended meditation on questions of the human, epistemology, and the historical ways in which the black being is understood. Drawing on numerous fields, from literary theory and musicology, to political theory and phenomenology, as well as Greek and Arabic philosophy, Judy engages literary texts and performative practices such as music and dance that express knowledge and conceptions of humanity appositional to those grounding modern racialized capitalism. Operating as critiques of Western humanism, these practices and modes of being-in-the-world—which he theorizes as “thinking in disorder,” or “poiēsis in black”—foreground the irreducible concomitance of flesh, thinking, and personhood. As Judy demonstrates, recognizing this concomitance is central to finding a way past the destructive force of ontology that still holds us in thrall. Erudite and capacious, Sentient Flesh offers a major intervention in the black study of life.

Book Epistemic Pragmatism and Other Studies in the Theory of Knowledge

Download or read book Epistemic Pragmatism and Other Studies in the Theory of Knowledge written by Nicholas Rescher and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2013-05-02 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The core of pragmatism lies in the concept of functional efficacy-of utility in short. And epistemic pragmatism accordingly focuses on the utility of our devices and practices in relation to the aims and purposes of the cognitive enterprise-answering questions, resolving puzzlement, guiding action. The present book revolves around this theme. All papers in this book bear on epistemological topics which have preoccupied Nicholas Rescher for many years. Much as with the thematic structure of this book, this interest expanded from an initial concern with the exact sciences, to encompass the epistemology of the human sciences, and ultimately the epistemology of philosophy itself.

Book Individuals Minds and Bodies Themes from Leibniz

Download or read book Individuals Minds and Bodies Themes from Leibniz written by Massimiliano Carrara and published by Franz Steiner Verlag. This book was released on 2004 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is analytic metaphysics the kind of metaphysics that contemporary analytic philosophers study? One of the aims of this special issue of the Studia Leibnitiana is to demonstrate that it would be misleading to think so. The reason is simply that some important past metaphysicians also adopted an analytic style and G. W. Leibniz is surely one of them. His analysis on the notion of identity and individuality, on the difference between artifacts and biological entities are pieces of analytic metaphysics. The other aim of the volume is to show that there is a close semantic connection between the concepts of individual, mind and body in Leibniz. The book tried to demonstrate it from both an analytical and a historical point of view. .

Book The Work of Difference

    Book Details:
  • Author : Audrey Wasser
  • Publisher : Fordham Univ Press
  • Release : 2016-03-01
  • ISBN : 0823270076
  • Pages : 216 pages

Download or read book The Work of Difference written by Audrey Wasser and published by Fordham Univ Press. This book was released on 2016-03-01 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Work of Difference addresses a fundamental ontological question: What is literature? And at the heart of this question, it argues, is the problem of the new. How is it that new works or new forms are possible within the rule-governed orders of history, language use, or the social? How are new works in turn recognizable to already-existing institutions? Tracing the relationship between literature and the problem of newness back to a set of concerns first articulated in early German romanticism, this book goes on to mount a critique of romantic tendencies in contemporary criticism in order, ultimately, to develop an original theory of literary production. Along the way, it offers new readings of major modernist novels by Samuel Beckett, Marcel Proust, and Gertrude Stein.

Book The Science of the Individual Leibniz s Ontology of Individual Substance

Download or read book The Science of the Individual Leibniz s Ontology of Individual Substance written by Stefano Bella and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2005-08-22 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his well-known Discourse on Metaphysics, Leibniz puts individual substance at the basis of metaphysical building. In so doing, he connects himself to a venerable tradition. His theory of individual concept, however, breaks with another idea of the same tradition, that no account of the individual as such can be given. Contrary to what has been commonly accepted, Leibniz’s intuitions are not the mere result of the transcription of subject-predicate logic, nor of the uncritical persistence of some old metaphysical assumptions. They grow, instead, from an unprejudiced inquiry about our basic ontological framework, where logic of truth, linguistic analysis, and phenomenological experience of the mind’s life are tightly interwoven. Leibniz’s struggle for a concept capable of grasping concrete individuals as such is pursued in an age of great paradigm changes – from the Scholastic background to Hobbes’s nominalism to the Cartesian ‘way of ideas’ or Spinoza’s substance metaphysics – when the relationships among words, ideas and things are intensively discussed and wholly reshaped. This is the context where the genesis and significance of Leibniz’s theory of ‘complete being’ and its concept are reconstrued. The result is a fresh look at some of the most perplexing issues in Leibniz scholarship, like his ideas about individual identity and the thesis that all its properties are essential to an individual. The questions Leibniz faces, and to which his theory of individual substance aims to answer, are yet, to a large extent, those of contemporary metaphysics: how to trace a categorial framework? How to distinguish concrete and abstract items? What is the metaphysical basis of linguistic predication? How is trans-temporal sameness assured? How to make sense of essential attributions? In this ontological framework Leibniz’s further questions about the destiny of human individuals and their history are spelt out. Maybe his answers also have something to tell us. This book is aimed at all who are interested in Leibniz’s philosophy, history of early modern philosophy and metaphysical issues in their historical development.

Book Le Tractatus de Wittgenstein et l thique de Spinoza

Download or read book Le Tractatus de Wittgenstein et l thique de Spinoza written by Markus Aenishänslin and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 403 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

  • Author : Ludger Honnefelder
  • Publisher : BRILL
  • Release : 1996
  • ISBN : 9789004103573
  • Pages : 634 pages

Download or read book John Duns Scotus written by Ludger Honnefelder and published by BRILL. This book was released on 1996 with total page 634 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Of realty the rarest-veined unraveler', John Duns Scotus was one of the profoundest metaphysicians who ever lived. In this volume, the world's foremost Scotus scholars collaborate to present the latest research on his work. In ethics, the focus is on practical wisdom, on beauty as an ethical concept, and on the independence of the virtues; in metaphysics, on modality, individuation, and being. Textbook accounts notwithstanding, Scotus' theory of logical possibilities implies no existence or actuality for possible beings though being and thinking presuppose the domain of possibility; potency only supervenes on the actual. There are important thirteenth-century precursors of Scotus' theory of modality and individuation. Posterior to quidditative entity, Scotus clearly distinguishes the ultimate reality of individual beings both from individuals and from individuality.
