Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This "Liber Amicorum" was written by prominent colleagues and friends of the President of the International Court of Justice, Judge Mohammed Bedjaoui, in honour of his 70th birthday and in celebration of a lifelong career devoted to the promotion of international law. The contributors are, each and every one, the most outstanding professors and thinkers in their field, and the range of topics reflects a broad scope of current thought and theory in international law. The book is divided into a general introductory part on the life and times of Judge Bedjaoui, followed by four sections. Section One is on General International Law, featuring a range of articles from environmental treaties to the role of the United Nations. Section Two is devoted to the International Court of Justice and includes analyses of the role and procedure of the ICJ. Section Three contains an interesting selection of articles in the field of Human Rights, from self-determination to the concept of universality. Section Four addresses a miscellanea of international legal questions, especially those related to international organizations. The contributions are in both English and French.
Download or read book The Bureaucratic Phenomenon written by Michel Crozier and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-28 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Bureaucratic Phenomenon Michel Crozier demonstrates that bureaucratic institutions need to be understood in terms of the cultural context in which they operate. The originality of the study lies in its association of two widely different approaches: the theory of decision-making in large organizations and the cultural analysis of social patterns of action. The book opens with a detailed examination of two forms of French public service. These studies show that professional training and distortions alone cannot ex plain the rise of routine behavior and dysfunctional vicious circles. The role of various bureaucratic systems appears to depend on the pattern of power relation ships between groups and individuals. Crozier's findings lead him to the view that bureaucratic structures form a necessary protection against the risks inherent in collective action.Since systems of protection are built around basic cultural traits, the author presents a French bureaucratic model based on centralization, strata isolation, and individual sparkle-one that that can be contrasted with an American, Russian, or Japanese model. He points out how the same patterns can be found in several areas of French life: education, industrial relations, politics, business, and the colonial policy. Bureaucracy, Crozier concludes, is not a modern disease resulting from organizational progress but rather a bulwark against development. The breakdown of the traditional bureaucratic system in modern France offers hope for new and fruitful forms of action.

Download or read book A Critical Dictionary of Sociology written by Raymond Boudon and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2002-09-10 with total page 517 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unlike most other sociology or social science dictionaries, in this translation of the Critical Dictionary of Sociology, taken from the second French edition of the Dictionary and edited by the English sociologist Peter Hamilton, the critical value of this distinctive work is at last made available for a wider audience. Each entry grapples directly with an issue, whether theoretical, epistemological, philosophical, political or empirical, and provides a strong statement of what the authors think about it. The discussions are considered but argumentative. By reaffirming that a non-marxist style of critique is still possible, Boudon and Bourricaud have presented a distinctive approach to the key issues which confront the societies of the Twentieth and Twenty-First centuries. For some this work will be a textbook, for others an indispensable sourcebook of sociological concepts, and for most a way of opening our eyes to new dimensions in our understanding of the great ideas and theories of sociology.
