Book The French Booktrade and the permission Simple of 1777

Download or read book The French Booktrade and the permission Simple of 1777 written by Robert L. Dawson and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 696 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1777 a series of royal decrees heralded the restructuring of the French booktrade. An important innovation was the creation of a public domain for certain kinds of books whose privil ge (or 'copyright') had expired. In order not to relinquish control over a vast category of books, the government decided to implement a new kind of printing and publishing permit - the 'permission simple'. As historian and bibliologist, the author examines the many issues involved in the implementation of the permit, explaining the circumstances that led to the creation of a public domain, the economic policies of the government with respect to the 'permission simple', and what exactly the procedures entailed. Other issues concerning the permit are also covered: edition runs; a number of illicit activities; the relationship of free trade, the physiocrats and Turgot to booktrade policies; the significance of Diderot's Lettre sur le commerce de la librairie. The study is largely based on hitherto unpublished sources and on books printed by virtue of the permit. Included in the volume is an edition of the 'permission simple' ledgers. This is the first time that the registers of an entire category of French books printed by virtue of a given authorisation have been published. They contain references to nearly two thousand editions - many today lost - of a wide variety of works. The entries are invaluable for the information they provide about the output of many important provincial printers and booksellers. Together the two registers provide a unique picture of French book production during the dozen years or so preceding the Revolution.

Book Voices of the People in Nineteenth Century France

Download or read book Voices of the People in Nineteenth Century France written by David Hopkin and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2012-04-26 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This innovative study of the lives of ordinary people – peasants, fishermen, textile workers – in nineteenth-century France demonstrates how folklore collections can be used to shed new light on the socially marginalized. David Hopkin explores the ways in which people used traditional genres such as stories, songs and riddles to highlight problems in their daily lives and give vent to their desires without undermining the two key institutions of their social world – the family and the community. The book addresses recognized problems in social history such as the division of power within the peasant family, the maintenance of communal bonds in competitive environments, and marriage strategies in unequal societies, showing how social and cultural history can be reconnected through the study of individual voices recorded by folklorists. Above all, it reveals how oral culture provided mechanisms for the poor to assert some control over their own destinies.

Book excerpt: From the Dust Jacket: The Invisibles are the gods of voodoo, some of them spirits and some of them dead ancestors elevated to the ranks of divinity. Born of the African religions, voodoo was originally brought to Haiti by the slaves and today permeates nearly all of Haitian society: the supernatural is invoked to teach young children to behave, to cure illness and to curse enemies; politicians take madwomen to bed to ensure success in elections. After many months of direct observation, Francis Huxley recounts with warmth and personal feeling how he befriended a Haitian voodoo priestess, took part in voodoo ceremonies, and received instruction in black magic from practicing priests. The Invisibles brings forth dark gods from the hotbed of superstition, magic, curse and counter-curse that is Haiti today-gods that stand revealed before the latest member of a brilliant dynasty of scholars and writers.

Book A History of Reading in the West

Download or read book A History of Reading in the West written by Guglielmo Cavallo and published by Univ of Massachusetts Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Literature has not always been written in the same ways, nor has it been received or read in the same ways over the course of Western civilization. Cavallo (Greek palaeography, U. of Rome La Sapienza), Chartier (Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales, Paris) and a number of other international contributors, address themes that highlight the transformation of reading methods and materials over the ages, such as the way texts in the Middle Ages were often written with the voice in mind, as they would have been read aloud, or even sung. Articles explore the innovations in the physical evolution of the book, as well as the growth and development of a broad-based reading public.
