It starts from a broad conception of cultural heritage that encompasses both tangible property, such as museum objects or buildings, and intangible heritage, such as languages and traditions. Cultural heritage thus defined is protected by various legal regimes, including the law of armed conflicts, UNESCO Conventions and international criminal law. With a view to strengthening international protection, the authors analyze existing regimes and elaborate innovative concepts, such as blue helmets of culture and safe havens for endangered cultural heritage. Finally, the ends of international protection come to the fore, and the authors address possible conflicts between protecting cultural diversity and wishes to strengthen cultural identity.

Laissant ainsi de côté l'analyse de ces patrimoines dans leur solitude, les contributions ont plutôt cherché à explorer l'écheveau des relations, réelles et symboliques, conscientes ou inconscientes, entre le matériel et l'immatériel. Chacun s'est ainsi intéressé, à partir de son champ disciplinaire, à la manière dont les valeurs et les pratiques de l'un s'incarnent dans la matérialité de l'autre et, inversement, à la façon dont les objets témoignent et accompagnent l'immatérialité. En explorant ces questions, les chercheurs ont accepté plusieurs conditions, dont celle, d'abord, de s'attarder au processus qui confère à leur objet d'étude un statut patrimonial et celle, ensuite, de s'inscrire dans une démarche de compréhension globale ou, tout au moins, englobante qui prend en compte l'objet, les pratiques et les sens.
