In Rescuing Socrates, Dominican-born American academic Roosevelt Montás tells the story of how a liberal education transformed his life, and offers an intimate account of the relevance of the Great Books today, especially to members of historically marginalized communities. Montás emigrated from the Dominican Republic to Queens, New York, when he was twelve and encountered the Western classics as an undergraduate in Columbia University’s renowned Core Curriculum, one of America’s last remaining Great Books programs. The experience changed his life and determined his career—he went on to earn a PhD in English and comparative literature, serve as director of Columbia’s Center for the Core Curriculum, and start a Great Books program for low-income high school students who aspire to be the first in their families to attend college. Weaving together memoir and literary reflection, Rescuing Socrates describes how four authors—Plato, Augustine, Freud, and Gandhi—had a profound impact on Montás’s life. In doing so, the book drives home what it’s like to experience a liberal education—and why it can still remake lives.

Book excerpt: Socrates, Or On Human Knowledge, published in Venice in 1651, is the only work written by a Jew that contains so far the promise of a genuinely sceptical investigation into the validity of human certainties. Simone Luzzatto masterly developed this book as a pièce of theatre where Socrates, as main actor, has the task to demonstrate the limits and weaknesses of the human capacity to acquire knowledge without being guided by revelation. He achieved this goal by offering an overview of the various and contradictory gnosiological opinions disseminated since ancient times: the divergence of views, to which he addressed the most attention, prevented him from giving a fixed definition of the nature of the cognitive process. This obliged him to come to the audacious conclusion of neither affirming nor denying anything concerning human knowledge, and finally of suspending his judgement altogether. This work unfortunately had little success in Luzzatto’s lifetime, and was subsequently almost forgotten. The absence of substantial evidence from his contemporaries and that of his epistolary have thus increased the difficulty of tracing not only its legacy in the history of philosophical though, but also of understanding the circumstances surrounding the writing of his Socrates. The present edition will be a preliminary study aiming to shed some light on the philosophical and historical value of this work’s translation, indeed it will provide a broader readership with the opportunity to access this immensely complicated work and also to grasp some aspects of the composite intellectual framework and admirable modernity of Venetian Jewish culture in the ghetto.

Dans l'Exorde, qui correspond à l'introduction du premier discours, Socrate prétend tout d'abord que le discours de ses accusateurs, qui sont Mélétos, Anytos et Lycon, était particulièrement convaincant, du fait qu'ils s'étaient préparés et qu'ils ont l'habitude de jouer ce rôle dans un tribunal athénien, mais que le discours ne contient en fait aucune vérité. Puis, il avance que, à l'opposé de ses accusateurs, il ne s'est pas préparé, et n'a jamais comparu dans un tribunal en tant que citoyen, même à son âge très avancé, et que donc il ne sera probablement pas convaincant, bien que ce soit lui qui détienne la vérité et qui la livre honnêtement aux juges (Socrate appelle les juges « Athéniens », car ils n'ont pas encore délivré leur jugement et ne sont donc que des simples citoyens avant cela, mais nous les appellerons juges pour plus de clarté, et pour les distinguer du public). Enfin, il présente son plan global : Socrate va d'abord répondre aux anciennes accusations, puis aux nouvelles. L'apologie est une de ces oeuvres rares qui comble le fossé entre philosophie et littérature. Cette oeuvre de Platon cherche plus à dresser le portrait du philosophe idéal qu'à poser des thèses philosophiques. Platon, à travers l'Apologie, montre que Socrate incarne la philosophie. On peut également y associer trois grands thèmes de la pensée socratique: l'ironie socratique, la maïeutique, et les préoccupations éthiques. Cette présentation du philosophe-type nourrira l'ensemble de l'histoire de la philosophie. L'image du Sage sera celle d'une victime, méprisée et incomprise de ses contemporains, condamné par l'ignorance de son public. On voit clairement la résonance de cette thématique avec l'Allégorie de la Caverne, dans laquelle le philosophe, porteur de la vérité, reste incompris des hommes enchaînés et vivant dans l'ignorance. 📣 A propos de l'auteur : Platon (424-347 av. J.-C.) est un philosophe grec d'Athènes. Disciple de Socrate, il rédige une série de dialogues mettant en scène celui-ci. On trouve dans les dialogues tardifs tels que la République la célèbre doctrine platonicienne des Idées, qui distingue deux réalités, le monde sensible, celui que nous voyons et le monde intelligible, ou monde des Idées. Il fut vendu comme esclave par le tyran Denys de Syracuse, puis libéré. Il fonda une école, l'Académie, et Aristote fut son disciple.
