Book The Originality of the Avant Garde and Other Modernist Myths

Download or read book The Originality of the Avant Garde and Other Modernist Myths written by Rosalind E. Krauss and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 1986-07-09 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Co-founder and co-editor of October magazine, a veteran of Artforum of the 1960s and early 1970s, Rosalind Krauss has presided over and shared in the major formulation of the theory of postmodernism. In this challenging collection of fifteen essays, most of which originally appeared in October, she explores the ways in which the break in style that produced postmodernism has forced a change in our various understandings of twentieth-century art, beginning with the almost mythic idea of the avant-garde. Krauss uses the analytical tools of semiology, structuralism, and poststructuralism to reveal new meanings in the visual arts and to critique the way other prominent practitioners of art and literary history write about art. In two sections, "Modernist Myths" and "Toward Postmodernism," her essays range from the problem of the grid in painting and the unity of Giacometti's sculpture to the works of Jackson Pollock, Sol Lewitt, and Richard Serra, and observations about major trends in contemporary literary criticism.

Book Typology of Writing Systems

Download or read book Typology of Writing Systems written by Susanne R. Borgwaldt and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2013-06-15 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Typology research is extremely important in both proposing classification frameworks and in promoting the careful investigation and analysis of the core concepts inherent within the classification contrasts employed. More exemplary of the latter aspect, the present collection of papers on the typology of writing systems address a number of significant linguistic and psycholinguistic issues surrounding the classification of writing systems. The seven contributions within this volume, which originally appeared as a special issue of Written Language and Literacy 14:1 (2011), cover a wide variety of issues, ranging from an overview of writing system typology research, comparative graphematics, letter-shape similarities, the morphographic principle, tone orthography typology, measuring graphematic transparency, to unconventional spellings within online chat. Reflecting the growing interest in writing, the book will be of interest to advanced students and researchers working on writing systems, written language, and reading research.

Book The Gutter in the Sky

Download or read book The Gutter in the Sky written by Jean Genet and published by . This book was released on 1955 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written while he was in prison for burglary and published in 1944 in French, the novel and the author were championed by many contemporary writers, including Jean-Paul Sartre and Jean Cocteau, who helped engineer a pardon for Genet. A wildly imaginative fantasy of the Parisian underworld, the novel tells the story of Divine, a male prostitute who consorts with thieves, pimps, murderers, and other criminals and who has many sexual adventures. Written in lyrical, dreamlike prose, the novel affirms a new moral order, one in which criminals are saints, evil is glorified, and conventional taboos are freely violated.

Book Indian Philosophy

    Book Details:
  • Author : Daya Krishna
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press, USA
  • Release : 1991
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 266 pages

Download or read book Indian Philosophy written by Daya Krishna and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1991 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most writings on Indian Philosophy assume that its central concern is with moksa, that the Vedas along with the Upanisadic texts are at the root of it and that it consists of six orthodox systems known as Mimamasa, Vedanta, Nyaya, Vaisesika, Samkhya and Yoga, on the one hand and three unorthodox systems: Buddhism, Jainism and Carvaka, on the other. Besides these, they accept generally the theory of Karma and the theory of Purusartha as parts of what the Indian tradition thinks about human action. The essays in this volume question these assumptions and show that there is little ground for accepting them. A new counter-perspective is thus prepared for the a articulation of the Indian philosophical tradition which breaks the traditional frame in which it has usually been presented.

Book Le ons de linguistique de Gustave Guillaume 1956 1957

Download or read book Le ons de linguistique de Gustave Guillaume 1956 1957 written by Gustave Guillaume and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
