Book Psychosocial Health Work and Language

Download or read book Psychosocial Health Work and Language written by Stéphanie Cassilde and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-02-13 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume deals with the construction of categorizations of health at work on the basis of individuals’ perceptions and analyses of the psychosocial health effects at their work. The volume approaches the subject from the point of view of those who have experienced psychosocial risks at work, either by being under constraints themselves or by being witness to such constraints. Each chapter sheds light on their representations by examining how the individuals label these constraints. The book compares official categorizations of psychosocial health effects of work to unofficial categorizations, built or expressed. It shows how taking into account subjective narratives may reinforce existing strategies. By giving a central place to language in the analysis of the representations of psychosocial health at work, the volume provides additional information about the various prevention and coping strategies that can be used for dealing with the issue. Beyond some international comparisons, the book covers various national case studies, including in Argentina, Belgium, Canada, Chechnya, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Japan, and Russia.

Book From UI to EI

Download or read book From UI to EI written by Georges Campeau and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Established in 1940 in response to the Great Depression, the original goal of Canada’s system of unemployment insurance was to ensure the protection of income to the unemployed. Joblessness was viewed as a social problem and the jobless as its unfortunate victims. If governments could not create the right conditions for full employment, they were obligated to compensate people who could not find work. While unemployment insurance expanded over several decades to the benefit of the rights of the unemployed, the mid-1970s saw the first stirrings of a counterattack as the federal government’s Keynesian strategy came under siege. Neo-liberalists denounced unemployment insurance and other aspects of the welfare state as inflationary and unproductive. Employment was increasingly thought to be a personal responsibility and the handling of the unemployed was to reflect a free-market approach. This regressive movement culminated in the 1990s counter-reforms, heralding a major policy shift. The number of unemployed with access to benefits was halved during that time. From UI to EI examines the history of Canada’s unemployment insurance system and the rights it grants to the unemployed. The development of the system, its legislation, and related jurisprudence are viewed through a historical perspective that accounts for the social, political, and economic context. Campeau critically examines the system with emphasis upon its more recent transformations. This book will interest professors and students of law, political science, and social work, and anyone concerned about the right of the unemployed to adequate protection.

Book The Terror of Natural Right

Download or read book The Terror of Natural Right written by Dan Edelstein and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2009 with total page 562 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Natural right - the idea that there is a collection of laws and rights based not on custom or belief but that are "natural" in origin - is typically associated with liberal politics and freedom. But during the French Revolution, this tradition was interpreted to justify the most repressive actions of the violent period known as the Terror." "In The Terror of Natural Right, Dan Edelstein argues that the revolutionaries used the natural right concept of the "enemy of the human race" - an individual who has transgressed the laws of nature and must be executed without judicial formalities - to authorize three-quarters of the deaths during the Terror. But the significance of the natural right did not end with its legal application. Edelstein argues that the Jacobins shared a political philosophy that he calls "natural republicanism," which assumed the natural state of society was a republic and that natural right provided its only acceptable laws. Ultimately, he argues that what we call the Terror was in fact only one facet of the republican theory that prevailed from Louis's trial until the fall of Robespierre." "A work of historical analysis, political theory, literary criticism, and intellectual history, The Terror of Natural Right challenges prevailing assumptions of the Terror to offer a new perspective on the Revolutionary period."--BOOK JACKET.

Book Objective Legal Basis Selected Writings

Download or read book Objective Legal Basis Selected Writings written by Bogdan Szlachta and published by Wydawnictwo Instytutu Wymiaru Sprawiedliwości. This book was released on 2021 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the interwar period, Czesław Martyniak, Fr. Antoni Szymański, and Ignacy Czuma worked at the newly established Catholic University of Lublin, basing their scientific activity mainly on the Thomistic tradition in the philosophy of law and referring to it in taking up criticism of the then influential trends: the legal positivism (especially as developed by Hans Kelsen, who was considered to be the creator of its normative variety) and solidarism (treated by many authors of those times as a proposal for the critics of positivism, referring to “social facts” rather than to the norms of the natural order). Limiting this introduction to an attempt to make the reader interested in the context of heritage and fundamental issues of the philosophy of law, we will only point out that the content of the statements of the abovementioned authors had mainly polemical value. This does not mean, however, that apart from the critical arguments, we will not find an outline of a positive position in their writings. They undoubtedly demonstrate the importance of the need to establish a universal “species goal” and thus to indicate a certain, appropriate and purposeful structure of action for all people, as one that for many centuries has defined an essential aspect of the philosophy of law. They see that questioning this orientation (together with the negation of a realistic position which treats the human species as a real existence, a kind of participation in every human being) has opened up a perspective for new approaches, for the differentiation of norms within every political community and for the search of justifications for those who take part in the creation of the legal order. They are aware that the classical structure of reflection on the law, present already in the Renaissance thought, has been replaced by another: the reflection on the universal purpose of the human species has been taken over by reflection on the multiplicity of objectives of the individual and the search for a guarantee of their realisation, sometimes taking into account the objectives of the state as a particular kind of being, which is to some extent independent of the existence (and objectives) of its constituent individuals. They know that this approach was the result of a particular type of intellectual evolution that had taken place in European culture since around the 13th century, leading to a gradual shift of interest from the order of all things to the projects of individuals. They reach directly to St. Thomas Aquinas and analyse the foundations of the normative order, which at least sets a negative limit to the ability of individuals and legislators to act, as well as to the content of established norms.
