Book Animation Plasticity and Music in Italy 1770 1830

Download or read book Animation Plasticity and Music in Italy 1770 1830 written by Ellen Lockhart and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2017-09-19 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This path-breaking study of stage works in Italian musical performances reconsiders a crucial period of music history. Through an interdisciplinary examination of the statue animated by music, Ellen Lockhart deftly shows how Enlightenment ideas influenced Italian theater and music, and vice versa. As Lockhart reveals, the animated statue became a fundamental figure within aesthetic theory and musical practice during the years spanning 1770–1830. Taking as its point of departure a repertoire of Italian ballets, melodramas, and operas from this period, Animation, Plasticity, and Music in Italy traces its core ideas between science, philosophy, theories of language, itinerant performance traditions, the epistemology of sensing, and music criticism.

Book Architecture Death and Nationhood

Download or read book Architecture Death and Nationhood written by Hannah Malone and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-04-28 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the nineteenth century, new cemeteries were built in many Italian cities that were unique in scale and grandeur, and which became destinations on the Grand Tour. From the Middle Ages, the dead had been buried in churches and urban graveyards but, in the 1740s, a radical reform across Europe prohibited burial inside cities and led to the creation of suburban burial grounds. Italy’s nineteenth-century cemeteries were distinctive as monumental or architectural structures, rather than landscaped gardens. They represented a new building type that emerged in response to momentous changes in Italian politics, tied to the fight for independence and the creation of the nation-state. As the first survey of Italy’s monumental cemeteries, the book explores the relationship between architecture and politics, or how architecture is formed by political forces. As cities of the dead, cemeteries mirrored the spaces of the living. Against the backdrop of Italy’s unification, they conveyed the power of the new nation, efforts to construct an Italian identity, and conflicts between Church and state. Monumental cemeteries helped to foster the narratives and mentalities that shaped Italy as a new nation.

Download or read book Plotting the Past written by Cristina Della Coletta and published by Purdue University Press. This book was released on 1996 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through an examination of nineteenth- and twentieth-century theoretical work and novels, Della Coletta presents an authoritatively original recasting of the notion of the historical novel. Della Coletta's analysis of these novels suggests that genres are ideological units molded by culture and history, and that current ideologies shape the literary representation of the historical past. This innovative case study thus illuminates not just the twentieth-century Italian historical novel but also the function of literary genres as a whole.

Book Developments in the Histories of Sexualities

Download or read book Developments in the Histories of Sexualities written by Chris Mounsey and published by Bucknell University Press. This book was released on 2013-04-11 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Developments in the Histories of Sexualities: In Search of the Normal,1600-1800 explores the oppositionscreated by the official exclusion ofbanned sexual practices and theresistance to that exclusion throughwidespread acceptance of thoseoutlawed practices at an interpersonallevel. At different times and in differentplaces, state legislation sets up—ortries to set up—a “normal” by rejectinga particular practice or group ofpractices. Yet this “normal” is derogatedby popular practice, since the bannedacts themselves are thought at thegrassroots level to be “normal.” Amongthe events discussed in these essaysare the Woods-Pirie trial, the “Ladies ofLlangollen,” the popular acceptance offops and mollies, and the press reactionto the discovery that James Allen wasa woman who had lived successfullyas a man and Lavinia Edwards wasa man who had made her living as afemale prostitute. Developments in the History of Sexualities analyzesboth the state language of bansand fiats about sexuality, and thegrassroots language which marks theacceptance of multiplicity in sexualpractice. Contributors benefit fromthe accumulation of new evidenceof attitudes towards sexual practice, and they engage with a wide range oftexts, including Ned Ward’s History of the Clubs, Tobias Smollett’s Roderick Random, Shakespeare’s Taming of the Shrew and The Tempest, Dryden’s All for Love, Anne Batten Cristall’s Poetical Sketches, Isaac de Benserade’s Iphis et Iante, and Alessandro Verri’s Le Avventure di Saffo.

Download or read book The Lyric Myth of Voice written by Jessica Gabriel Peritz and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2022-11-15 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How did "voice" become a metaphor for selfhood in the Western imagination? The Lyric Myth of Voice situates the emergence of an ideological connection between voice and subjectivity in late eighteenth-century Italy, where long-standing political anxieties and new notions of cultural enlightenment collided in the mythical figure of the lyric poet-singer. Ultimately, music and literature together shaped the singing voice into a tool for civilizing modern Italian subjects. Drawing on a range of approaches and frameworks from historical musicology to gender studies, disability studies, anthropology, and literary theory, Jessica Gabriel Peritz shows how this ancient yet modern myth of voice attained interpretable form, flesh, and sound. The publisher gratefully acknowledges the generous support of the AMS 75 PAYS Fund of the American Musicological Society, supported in part by the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.

Book L adab toujours recommenc

Download or read book L adab toujours recommenc written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-08-21 with total page 890 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The notion of adab is at the very heart of the Islamicate cultures. Born in the crucible of the Arabic and Persian civilisations of the Late Antiquity period, nourished by Greek, Syriac and Indian influences, this polysemic notion could cover a variegated range of meanings, ranging from good behaviour, good manners, etiquette, proper knowledge of the rules, to belles-lettres, and finally, literature. This volume addresses the notion of adab through four perspectives, which correspond to the four parts into which it is divided: “Origins”; “Transmissions”; “Metamorphosis” of the “Origins” and finally “Origins” through the lens of modernity.
