This book was released on 2020-06-25 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abortion in Latin America and the Caribbean is the first major book to analyze the abortion laws of the Latin American and Caribbean nations that are parties to the American Convention on Human Rights. Making use of a broad range of materials relating to human rights and abortion law not yet available in English, the first part of this book analyzes how Inter-American human rights bodies have interpreted the American Convention’s prenatal right to life. The second part examines Article 4(1) of the American Convention, comparing and analyzing the laws regarding prenatal rights and abortion in all twenty-three nations that are parties to this treaty. Castaldi questions how Inter-American human rights bodies currently interpret Article 4(1). Against the predominant view, she argues that the purpose of this treaty is to grant legal protection of the unborn child from elective abortion that is broad and general, not merely exceptional. Abortion in Latin America and the Caribbean offers an objective analysis of national and international laws on abortion, proposing a new interpretation of the American Convention’s right-to-life provision that is nonrestrictive and provides general protection for the unborn. The book will appeal not only to students and scholars in the field of international human rights but also to human rights advocates more generally.

Download or read book Gender Parity and Multicultural Feminism written by Ruth Rubio-Marín and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-09-26 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Around the world, we see a 'participatory turn' in the pursuit of gender equality, exemplified by the adoption of gender quotas in national legislatures to promote women's role as decision-makers. We also see a 'pluralism turn', with increasing legal recognition given to the customary law or religious law of minority groups and indigenous peoples. To date, the former trend has primarily benefitted majority women, and the latter has primarily benefitted minority men. Neither has effectively ensured the participation of minority women. In response, multicultural feminists have proposed institutional innovations to strengthen the voice of minority women, both at the state level and in decisions about the interpretation and evolution of cultural and religious practices. This volume explores the connection between gender parity and multicultural feminism, both at the level of theory and in practice. The authors explore a range of cases from Europe, Latin America, the Middle East, and Africa, in relation to state law, customary law, religious law, and indigenous law. While many obstacles remain, and many women continue to suffer from the paradox of multicultural vulnerability, these innovations in theory and practice offer new prospects for reconciling gender equality and pluralism.

Book excerpt: Tracing My Roots in Guanajuato, Len, and Silaos Haciendas and Ranchos (17341945) outlines the steps the author took to research his fathers ancestors in the Mexican state of Guanajuato. One step involved him becoming a proficient reader of microfilm to study old church records from the comforts of a history center in McAllen, near his home in Laredo. Another took him to his fathers birthplace for the first time in 1992. The book also presents what the author yielded from his extensive research. At the center are two far-reaching genealogiesone of his grandfather Andrs Gonzlez, another of his grandmother Tomasa Daz. In his journey through their lineages, he met a parade of ancestors who lived their lives during different eras and locations in Guanajuato (mainly El Bajo). On occasion, these forefathers came face to face with historical figures, including Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla.

Download or read book Labyrinths of Power written by Peter H. Smith and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2015-03-08 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Peter Smith has written a comprehensive and in-depth study of the structure and more important of the transformation of the national political elite in twentieth-century Mexico. In doing so, he analyzes the long-run impact of the Mexican Revolution of 1910 on the composition of the country's ruling elite. Included in his focus are such issues as the social basis of politics, the recruitments process, political career patterns, the amount of periodic turnover, and the relationships between the political and economic elites. The author explores these issues through an empirical, computer-assisted investigation of biographical information on more than 6,000 individuals who held national political office in Mexico at any time between 1900 and 1976. He then employs various comparative and statistical techniques, along with a use of archival data, questionnaires, and interviews, to determine precisely how Mexico’s political system actually works. Professor Smith finds that the Revolution of 1910 did not fundamentally alter the class composition of the national elite, although it did redistribute power within it. He further observes that the Mexican Revolution did bring about a separation of political and economic elites, and that the route to political success is much more varied and less predictable now than before the revolutionary period.
