Download or read book The Secret of the Night written by Gaston Leroux and published by Jovian Press. This book was released on 2018-01-25 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Like The Mystery of the Yellow Room, The Secret of the Night is a Joseph Rouletabille mystery. In The Mystery of the Yellow Room fictional detective Rouletabille investigated a complex and seemingly impossible crime - in which the criminal appears to disappear from a locked room! There've been so many locked-room mysteries since that it's become a subgenre - but there are folks who believe Gaston Leroux invented the form. (We hate assertions like that. Have you noticed how often things turn out to have been invented by monks in the middle ages, or by prehistoric Chinamen, or seventeenth-century Englishmen? - Heavy sigh.) John Dickson Carr, the master of locked-room mystery, named The Mystery of the Yellow Room as the "finest locked room tale ever written" in his 1935 novel the Hollow Man.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
Download or read book French Crime Fiction written by Claire Gorrara and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is one of the first English-language studies to chart the development of crime fiction in French from the mid-nineteenth century to the present day. It analyses the distinctive features of a French-language tradition and introduces readers to a rich and varied body of work. Each chapter examines a specific period, movement or group of writers, as well as engaging with wider debates on the place of crime fiction within contemporary French and European culture. From early twentieth-century pioneers, such as Gaston Leroux and Maurice Leblanc, to the phenomenal success of Georges Simenon, from May 68 to the gender politics of crime fiction and postmodern reinventions, this collection approaches crime fiction in an interdisciplinary manner, alive to the innovative and often critically informed perspective it provides on French society and culture. The book also includes short extracts in English translation and an extensive bibliography of critical material for further reading. Such resources are aimed at encouraging the reader to gain a greater appreciation and understanding of this potent and formidable narrative of modern times.

Download or read book Optiques written by Andrea Goulet and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2013-04-05 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Andrea Goulet takes the study of the novel into the realm of the visual by situating it in the context of nineteenth-century scientific and philosophical discourse about the nature of sight. She argues that French realism, detective fiction, science fiction, and literature of the fantastic from 1830 to 1910 reflected competition between two modern visual modes: a not-yet-outdated idealism and an empiricism that located truth in the body. More specifically, the book argues that key narrative forms of the nineteenth century were shaped by a set of scientific debates: between idealism and materialism in Honoré Balzac's Comédie humaine, between deduction and induction in early French detective fiction, and between objective vision and subjective vision in the "optogram" fictions of Jules Verne and others. Goulet aims to revise critical views on the modern novel in a number of ways. For instance, although many literary studies focus on the impact of cinema, photography, and painting, Optiques asserts the materialist bases of realism by establishing a genealogy of popular fictional genres as fundamentally optical, that is, as articulated according to bodily notions of sight. With its chronological and interdisciplinary scope, Optiques stands to contribute an important chapter to the study of literary modernity in its scientific context.

This book was released on 2012-04-27T00:00:00+02:00 with total page 113 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Le Fantôme de l’Opéra is a multifaceted novel. It is a gothic novel, because it speaks of obscure presences, sadows, ghosts, fate and magic; it is a romantic novel, just as Gaston Leroux’s indolence was romantic, leading the author to a certain gloomy and bittersweet melancholy; it is a decadent novel, because its protagonist is a real dandy, theatrical and excessively elegant, who loves to surround himself with baroque furnishings, mirrors, velvet and gold, just as Wilde or Huysmans would have liked; it is a symbolist novel, filled with countless metaphors dear to fairy-tale narrative, such as the key, the ring, the kiss, the lake, the river; it is a surrealist novel, as Jean Cocteau declared, since it tells of dreams, vast and obsessive spaces, as in Louis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland; it is a modern novel that narrates the voyage into the inner depths of ourselves, connected to the world of Psychoanalysis and to Sigmund Freud; it is a detective novel, for the language of investigation that appears in certain passages and for its myriad of mysterious crimes; it is a love story that tells of an unhappy, unrequited passion. Le Fantôme de l’Opéra is a novel that contains many novels and many styles, and that touches us deeply because it speaks of emotions and feelings. It is a popular novel that tells stories about each one of us, even if these stories seem incredible. It is an extraordinary novel that inspired many other works: novels, films, television programs, circus performances, ice-skating phantasmagoria. It inspired these from its first appearance in 1910, to this day, and will continue to inspire others in years to come.
