Book Strato of Lampsacus

    Book Details:
  • Author : William Fortenbaugh
  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2017-09-29
  • ISBN : 1351487930
  • Pages : 486 pages

Download or read book Strato of Lampsacus written by William Fortenbaugh and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-29 with total page 486 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume 16 of Transaction's acclaimed Rutgers University Studies in Classical Humanities series, continues the work of Project Theophrastus on the School of Aristotle. The subject of this volume is Strato of Lampsacus in Mysia on the Hellespont. Strato was the third head of the Peripatetic School after Aristotle and Theophrastus. He succeeded the latter in c. 286 BCE and was in turn succeeded by Lyco of Troas in c. 268. Diogenes Laertius describes Strato as a distinguished person who became known as "the physicist," because more than anyone else he devoted himself to the careful study of nature. Strato's concern with the physical world is well attested by the titles of his books: On the Void, On the Heaven, and On the Wind. His other books point to a keen interest in human physiology, animal life and diseases. But it would be a mistake to think that Strato was uninterested in other areas of philosophic concern. Indeed, he wrote works on logic, first principles, theology, politics and ethics. None of this work survives intact, but the reports that have come down to us reveal much of present-day interest. Included is a new and complete edition of the ancient sources, together with a critical apparatus to the ancient texts, an English translation, and notes to the translation.

Book Origins and Identities in French Literature

Download or read book Origins and Identities in French Literature written by Buford Norman and published by Rodopi. This book was released on 1999 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essays in this volume investigate origins and identities of individuals and groups in French literature from the seventeenth century to the present, as well in French literature in general. They show how, as France developed a national identity through its literature, individuals of various origins searched for their own identities and often called into question not only traditional identities, but also the very literary means of creating them.

Book Physics and Philosophy of Nature in Greek Neoplatonism

Download or read book Physics and Philosophy of Nature in Greek Neoplatonism written by Riccardo Chiaradonna and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2009 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traditional scholarship has generally neglected the philosophy of nature in Greek Neoplatonism. In the last few decades, however, this attitude has changed radically. Natural philosophy has increasingly been regarded as a crucial aspect of late antique thought. Furthermore, several studies have outlined the impressive historical legacy of Neoplatonic physics. Building on this new interest, the ten papers published here concentrate on Neoplatonic philosophy of nature from Plotinus to Simplicius, and on its main conceptual features and its relation to the previous philosophical and scientific traditions. The papers were presented at a conference sponsored by the European Science Foundation in Castelvecchio Pascoli in June 2006. This volume makes an important contribution to the understanding of Greek Neoplatonism and its historical significance.
