Download or read book Traumatic Memory and the Ethical Political and Transhistorical Functions of Literature written by Susana Onega and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-12-01 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume addresses the construction and artistic representation of traumatic memories in the contemporary Western world from a variety of inter- and trans-disciplinarity critical approaches and perspectives, ranging from the cultural, political, historical, and ideological to the ethical and aesthetic, and distinguishing between individual, collective, and cultural traumas. The chapters introduce complementary concepts from diverse thinkers including Cathy Caruth, Jacques Derrida, Judith Butler, Homi Bhabha, Abraham and Torok, and Joyce Carol Oates; they also draw from fields of study such as Memory Studies, Theory of Affects, Narrative and Genre Theory, and Cultural Studies. Traumatic Memory and the Political, Economic, and Transhistorical Functions of Literature addresses trauma as a culturally embedded phenomenon and deconstructs the idea of trauma as universal, transhistorical, and abstract.

Download or read book Space and Time in Languages and Cultures written by Luna Filipovi? and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2012 with total page 509 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume offers novel insights into linguistic diversity in the domains of spatial and temporal reference, searching for uniformity amongst diversity. A number of authors discuss expression of dynamic spatial relations cross-linguistically in a vast range of typologically different languages such as Bezhta, French, Hinuq, Italian, Japanese, Polish, Serbian, and Spanish, among others. The contributions on linguistic expression of time all shed new light on pertinent questions regarding this cognitive domain, such as the hotly debated relationship between cross-linguistic differences in talking about time and universal principles of utterance interpretation, modelling temporal inference through aspectual interactions, as well as the complexity of the acquisition of tense-aspect relations in a second language. The topic of space and time in language and culture is also represented, from a different point of view, in the sister volume Space and Time in Languages and Cultures: Language, Culture, and Cognition (HCP 37) which discusses spatial and temporal constructs in human language, cognition, and culture in order to come closer to a better understanding of the interaction between shared and individual characteristics of language and culture that shape the way people interact with each other and exchange information about the spatio-temporal constructs that underlie their cognitive, social, and linguistic foundations.

Download or read book Caxton s Morte Darthur written by Takako Kato and published by The Society for the Study of Medieval Languages and Literature. This book was released on 2002 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Revisiting the fundamental texts of Sir Thomas Malory’s Morte Darthur, the Winchester manuscript and William Caxton’s printed edition, and investigating what happened in Caxton’s workshop are the best ways of discovering what Malory intended to write. This study investigates the irregular use of paraphs and the missing chapter-divisions in Caxton’s Morte, and reveals frequent alterations to it in order to fit his text on the page. It identifies the points at which alterations are most likely to have been made, and suggests that Caxton may have consulted the Winchester manuscript while he was preparing his edition, regularly with regard to textual divisions.
Download or read book English Merchant Shipping 1460 1540 written by Dorothy Burwash and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 1947-12-15 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between 1460 and 1540 the development of merchant shipping was of vital importance to the growth of England as a European power. In this work Miss Burwash offers a complete history of the English merchant marine in the late middle ages and early renaissance period. Her account includes a description of the size and design of the ships, the trades in which they engaged, the business arrangements under which they sailed and the codes of maritime law which governed them, the wages and conditions of work of the common seaman and the degree of navigational skill of the shipmasters and pilots. This was the time when seamen and merchants of northern Europe were beginning to venture out of the familiar home waters and undertake voyages of discovery such as the Bristol expeditions 1501–1504 which in all probability reached Labrador and possibly Greenland. The author concludes that, although English shipping faced stiff competition from traders and seamen of other countries in northern Europe—most particularly the Dutch—the period was one of healthy growth which laid a good foundation for the more brilliant and better known exploits of the Elizabethan age. Based on extensive and detailed research in manuscript sources preserved in the Public Record Office, British libraries and the British Museum, this study is an essential one for serious students of English history.
