Book Gender Quotas Parity Reform and Political Parties in France

Download or read book Gender Quotas Parity Reform and Political Parties in France written by Katherine A. R. Opello and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2006 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How did parity replace gender quotas in France as the preferred way to achieve greater representation for women in elected office? Why have these gender-based measures been embraced by some parties and not others? And, why do parties sometimes fail to implement quotas and parity? Gender Quotas, Parity Reform, and Political Parties in France considers this transition from quotas to parity, providing a history of French women's rights and the French electoral process, as well as an examination of the roles of the Socialist and Gaullist political parties.

Book excerpt: Helene Cixous is widely regarded as one of the world's most influential feminist writers and thinkers. "White Ink" brings together her most revealing interviews, available in English for the first time. Spanning over four decades and including a new interview with the editor Susan Sellers, this collection presents a brilliant, running commentary on the subjects at the heart of Cixous' writing. Here, Cixous discusses her books and her creative process, her views on and insights into literature, philosophy, theatre, politics, aesthetics, faith and ethics, human relations and the state of the world. As she responds to interviewers' questions, Cixous is prompted to reflect on her roles and activities as poet, playwright, feminist theorist, professor of literature, philosopher, woman, Jew. Each interview is a remarkable performance, an event in language and thought where Cixous' celebrated intellectual and poetic force can be witnessed 'in action'. The accessibility of the interview format provides an excellent starting-point for readers new to Cixous, while those already familiar with her work will find unexpected insights and fresh elucidations of her thought.

Book Le Monde des Femmes

Download or read book Le Monde des Femmes written by Alain Touraine and published by Fayard. This book was released on 2006-03-01 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Feminist Research

  • Author : Peta Tancred-Sheriff
  • Publisher : McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP
  • Release : 1988-10-01
  • ISBN : 0773561900
  • Pages : 320 pages

Download or read book Feminist Research written by Peta Tancred-Sheriff and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 1988-10-01 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The six parts of Feminist Research: Prospect and Retrospect parallel the female life cycle, highlighting themes such as the increasing power of medical definitions of female experience - including conception, pregnancy, childbirth - and the nature of depression in women. New perspectives are offered on the specificity of the female approach to both learning and teaching and are emphasized in considering problems such as dealing with alcohol abuse and wife-battering. For example, Margaret Eichler opens the initial section, "Reproduction and Maternity," with an analysis of the new reproductive technologies. Making use of interviews and quantitative material, Ann Quénairt and Jane Gordon take up the theme of the medicalization of reproduction, suggesting that it has encouraged women to see the foetus as taking priority over the needs of the mother during pregnancy. This section is completed by Martin Thomas' interesting approach to gender distribution. Feminist Research: Prospect and Retrospect offers a thorough look at the problems of women today, suggesting that society is encountering a period of strong reaction to the feminist movement of the late sixties and early seventies. Marguerite Anderson argues that only the "dynamite of research" will allow construction of a positive route forward. This collection includes essays in both English and French.

Book Women Art Critics in Nineteenth Century France

Download or read book Women Art Critics in Nineteenth Century France written by Wendelin Guentner and published by University of Delaware. This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past years, studies have begun not only to identify the factors that impeded the full participation of women artists in French cultural life, such as women’s limited access to professional art education, but also to bring to light the considerable artistic accomplishments of women occluded by historians for over a century. A similar effort at historical revision has been under way for French women writers. Works of fiction that enjoyed many editions in the nineteenth-century receded from our field of vision for almost a century before being rediscovered and reissued during the last decades of the twentieth century. Such efforts have resulted in scholarship that has helped revise the history of both artistic and literary expression in nineteenth-century France. Similarly, many women in nineteenth-century France had their art criticism published both in journal reviews and in book form, often for decades, in a number of the most influential venues of their day. However, it is perplexing that they remain almost totally invisible in histories of French culture. Women Art Critics in Nineteenth-Century France: Vanishing Acts is the first sustained effort to bring these prolific and influential critics out from the shadows. Although each of the chapters in this volume results from an interdisciplinary approach, the fact that they are written by scholars in art history and in literature means that there will be inevitable differences in approach and methodology. Thus, we study the women’s reception of specific artworks and aesthetic movements, discuss intersections of aesthetics and politics in their essays and the literary styles and rhetorical strategies of individual critics, explore the social conditions that allowed or impeded their successes, and suggest reasons for their all but disappearance in the twentieth century. In bringing to light for twenty-first-century readers the “vanished” writings of heretofore unrecognized or underrecognized women art critics, the authors hope to contribute to the ongoing revision of women’s role in cultural history. The multifaceted approaches to word/image studies modeled in this book, and the many avenues for further research it identifies, will inspire scholars in a number of disciplines to continue the work of reinscribing women in the history of cultural life.
