Malgré un patrimoine linguistique et historico-culturel commun, le monde arabe reste un espace fragmenté renfermant des sociétés mosaïques formées de minorités ethniques, religieuses et linguistiques. Si le mythe de l’unité arabe n’a pas résisté à la force des particularismes nationaux, les peuples arabes sont encore mus par une conscience collective et un sentiment de solidarité incarnés par la « cause » palestinienne. À défaut de destin commun, ce lien immatériel est perceptible dans le mouvement de mobilisations et de soulèvements populaires déclenché depuis 2011. Phénomène marquant de ce début de xxie siècle, ce « réveil » ouvre des perspectives nouvelles pour des Arabes appelés à repenser leur propre mode de développement politique, économique et social. De leur capacité à se redéfinir dépendra aussi la place des Arabes dans le nouvel ordre mondial.
