Book excerpt: "Pierre Teilhard de Chardin (1881-1955) has been regarded for too long as an isoteric thinker who evacuates theology by subjecting it to scientific theory. There is an urgent need to reclaim him as a French catholic theologian with intellectual roots in the early twentieth century. Teilhard's imaginative and inspiring work is grounded in the constructive use of biblical and patristic motifs and in his own life experiences of war, exile and scientific endeavour. From these, he develops a distinctive philosophical theology which combines elements frequently assigned to the separate domains of philosophy of religion, systematic theology and mysticism. Teilhard provides a detailed theology of human embodiment and natural substance, whilst his theories of human action, passion, vision and virtue offer suggestive resources to pastoral theology. His evolutionary cosmology and social democratic politics are discussed in their historical context, and the significance of his work for the ongoing dialogue between science and religion is assessed."--BOOK JACKET.

Book Teilhard de Chardin The Divine Milieu Explained

Download or read book Teilhard de Chardin The Divine Milieu Explained written by Louis M. Savary and published by Paulist Press. This book was released on 2007 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the twentieth century, Jesuit priest-scientist Pierre Teilhaid de Chardin developed a truly innovative spirituality. By integrating both a comprehensive evolutionary perspective and the discoveries of science into Christian spirituality, Teilhard presented a new way to understand the Word of God and the immensity of the Universal Christ. While many books have explored and explained Teilhard's theology, there has never been a spiritual guide for everyday use of his principles-until now. Savary transforms these challenging and difficult-to-understand concepts into a more accessible spirituality. The Divine Milieu Explained also offers a series of spiritual practices and exercises that integrate science and faith according to Teilhaid's evolutionary spirituality. "His purpose....[was] to see spiritual reality today-in the world contemporary men and women live in. thoroughly informed and transformed by science and technology." Book jacket.

Book Actology

    Book Details:
  • Author : Malcolm Torry
  • Publisher : Wipf and Stock Publishers
  • Release : 2020-07-08
  • ISBN : 1725266768

Download or read book Actology written by Malcolm Torry and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2020-07-08 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two streams run through the Western philosophical stream: one characterized by Being, beings, the unchanging, the static, and the unitary; and the other by Action, actions, the changing, the dynamic, and the diverse. The former might be represented by Parmenides, Plato, and much of what followed; the latter by Heraclitus, and by rather less of what followed. The book explores the "Action" stream as it wound its way through history, through Heraclitus, Plato, Aristotle, Hegel, Maurice Blondel, Henri Bergson, Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, process philosophy and theology, Geoffrey Studdert Kennedy, Ludwig Wittgenstein, and John Boys Smith. The journey enables us to create the beginnings of an "actology": a way of seeing ourselves, the universe, and God in terms of actions in patterns rather than as beings that change. Such an actology offers a complete alternative narrative far more in tune with the diverse and rapidly changing world in which we live than the ontology that has shaped philosophy, theology, and much else for the past two thousand years.

Book Teilhard and the Future of Humanity

Download or read book Teilhard and the Future of Humanity written by Thierry Meynard and published by Fordham Univ Press. This book was released on 2006 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fifty years after his death, the thought of the French scientist and Jesuit Pierre Teilhard de Chardin (1881-1955) continues to inspire new ways of understanding humanity's future. Trained as a paleontologist and philosopher, Teilhard was an innovative synthesizer of science and religion, developing an idea of evolution as an unfolding of material and mental worlds into an integrated, holistic universe at what he called the Omega Point. His books, such as the bestselling The Phenomenon of Man, have influenced generations of ecologists, environmentalists, planners, and others concerned with the fate of the earth. This book brings together original essays by leading experts who reflect on Teilhard's legacy for today's globalized world. They explore such topics as: the idea of God and the person; quantum reality and Teilhard's vision; spiritual resources for the future; politics and economics; and a charter for co-evolution.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "'Positive evidence will be necessary to prove that agreement can be reached between the scientific conception of the world and of man, and religion. The Jesuit, Teilhard de Chardin, has gone further than anyone else in dedicating himself to this task. For many years he has struggled to define the bridge between science and faith, in the same way as he has, as an anthropologist and priest, united the scientific conception of man. In his bold vision, he sees the resurgence of a humanity which will find its happiness in the Noosphere. This will not be attained by automation alone, but by the united effort of all who desire progress' (from the address of his Eminience Cardinal Koernig, Thursday, 27 July 1961, on the occassion of the fortieth anniversary of Pax Romana.)" - From text.

Book Pierre Teilhard de Chardin and Carl Gustav Jung Side by Side

Download or read book Pierre Teilhard de Chardin and Carl Gustav Jung Side by Side written by Fred Gustafson and published by Fisher King Press. This book was released on 2015-03-21 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pierre Teilhard de Chardin and C.G. Jung: Side by Side is an anthology written by authors from different backgrounds, sharing how the lives of Pierre Teilhard de Chardin and Carl Gustav Jung impacted them personally and/or how they understand the relevance of these two men for our present times. Contributors to this fourth volume of the Fisher King Review include: John Dourley, Peter Dunlap, Barbara Faris, Fred R. Gustafson, John Giannini, Richard W. Hanhardt, Robert Henderson, Steven B. Herrmann, Jane A. Kelley, Jon Magnuson, Francisco (Paco) Martorell, Stan V. McDaniel, Dennis L. Merritt, and Laura A. Weber. Though C.G.Jung and Pierre Teilhard de Chardin never met, their independent intellectual inquiries and courageous researches pushed the personal and collective soul forward and placed both of them at the foreground of needing to understand and integrate on a planetary level the core values of their expansive work. Both Jung and de Chardin were concerned with science and religion and operated within these paradigms. Both of them shook the world by offering up views, on one hand, of the profound depths of the human psyche and, on the other, presenting a profound re-consideration of evolution as a process leading toward a social unification of the planet. One used the concept of individuation, the other spoke of evolution. Each took these concepts to a creative depth so much so that the world they lived in either deeply admired or detested them. Both had conflicts in their chosen fields. Jung was a psychologist who used the field of science to explore the religious depths of the human soul by studying mythology, world religions, folk tales, dreams, and human behavior. Chardin used the ground of religion to work in the field of science via paleontology, geology, and physics as he explored a deeper and relevant understanding of evolution. Though each began from different intellectual platforms, they each crisscrossed into the other’s territory of inquiry and related their ideas to include the full scope of humanity. One went deeply into soul and found matter, whereas, the other went deeply into matter and found soul. In their own ways both spent their careers trying to heal the split between spirit and matter in the weltanschauung of their times reflected in the human psyche and in the general religious views permeating most of Western culture.
